SPECIAL NOTICES.
A CARO.
My attention having been called to a notiee
in the Chronicle § Sentinel of yesterday morn
ing, I called upon the Editor, and found C.
W. Styles, of Hamburg, to be the author.
I have not the slightest disposition to detract
from the merits of Mr. Styles, or to compro
mise the elevated position which he holds in
this community. Hence, I will make no com
ments upon Mr. S.’s own solicitation to
play "The Stranger,” or the authority which
I had from no less than three aspirants for
stage notoriety, to use the name of " a young
gentleman.” But as Mr. Styles claims all the
honor to himself, the best evidence I can pro
duce is his own note to me, —leaving the pub
lic to draw their own inferences, and, also, to
judge whether 1 have ever attempted to de
ceive them.
It is not for me to speak of the mo'ive which
prompted this singular course. I would,
however, recommend Mr. Styles to seek some
other channel for his popularity, as I will not
further condescend to notice such unmanly
attacks as that made in his notice of yesterday
morning.
Mr. Styles must dispel that vanity which
impels him to believe that he is the only
■young gentleman about this immediate vicinity
capable of displaying his dramatic propensi
ties upon the boards of a Theatre. There are
* others, burning with the fire of their own ge
nius, who rush into the mysteries of epics,
lyrics and tiagios, and make our wonder lov
ing citizens stare with astonishment. Among
them a fair portion of the honor should be di
vided, for they as frequently make philoso
phers. But without the ideal beauty of one’s
own imagination wo would never discern our
own force and refinement, and our poetical
and metaphysical genius would die in a pub
lic’s comprehension. Concert Hall would
Vlken be a dreary place, and the peaceful mer
chants of Broad Street would not rush to it,
to witness the reality of great men in the
present age.
Me. Adams.— Sir —ln consequence of an
engagement with a friend, which requires
my absence from this city, I shall net be able
to personate " The Stranger,” I have this
moment made the engagement and must beg
to be excused. Yours, truly,
C. W. STYLES.
