BY JAMES GARDNER, Jk.j
t LIKE AN OPEN, HONEST HEART.
I like an open, honest heart,
Where frankness loves to dwell.
* Which has no place for base deceit,
Nor hollow words can tell;
But in whose throbbings plain are seen,
The import of the mind,
Whose gentle breathings utter naught
But accents true md kind.
1 scorn that one whose empty act
And honeyed words of art,
Betray the feelings of the soul,
With perfidy’s keen dart j
No more, kind friends, in such confide,
Nor in their kindness trust,
For black ingratitude but turns
Pure friendship to disgust.
Contempt is but a gentle word,
A feeling far too mild,
For one who confidence betrays,
And guilt has sore beguiled ;
That hate which hellish fiends eviuce,
When the dark torments tossed,
Is not more loathsome to the soul,
Than one to honor lost.
Then give me one with heart as fiee
And generous »s the air :
Whose ready hand and greeting kind
Cite proof that truth is there;
Whose smiling countenance well shows
Affection warm is found,
And springs as pure as saints, whose notes
i hrough Heaven’s vault resound.
Death of Golding Tinsley. —Another Re
Yolutionary patriot has fallen. Another link
that bound us to the days and generation of
'76 is broken. On Sunday, the 17th inst., at
his residence in Spartanburg District, this
aged and venerable man calmly fell asleep, and
ceased to be numbered with the living. He
had attained the age of 96 years. Mr. Tinsley
'was one of those who survived the bloody
massacre of Hay's defeat. He was a brave
and true man in those perilous times
that tried men’s souls. Through almost the
whole of the war of the Revolution, he was
engaged in the defence of his country. His
character as a citizen was as pure and eleva
ted as in that of a patriot soldier he had been
brave and faithful. He was buried at Cross
Anchor, in this District with military honors,
amidst a concourse of thousands of citizens
who had assembled in honor of the deceased.
May they catch the inspiration of the scene
imitate his example, emulate his virtues, and
like him, march at the call of the country,
whenever her safety or interests shall require
their services!
“E’en roaa the tomb the voice of nature cries;
E’vn in o ur as hes live their wonted fires! ”
Honor to w Hom honor is due t and peace to
the memory of tu * furious dead !

A Noble Husband. —There is an old gen
tleman in this city—a nice old gentleman—
with a thousand a year. We do not say this
income is a salary; and if folks will understand
it ao, we do not say he is a clerk. If folks
Will understand that he is. we do not know to
what department he belongs—not we.
But he is a nice old gentleman, possessing
an agreeable appearance, pleasing manners, <■
thousand a year, and a pretty young wife!
Now, is he not a happy old gentleman? We
will not answer the queston: tne reader shall
decide it for himself, after he has read the
story.
We saw this old gentleman the other day
with a life-insurance policy in his hand, and
we took hold of his hand and pressed it har
der than usual.
‘‘This is like you," we sail. “Ever kind—
ever considerate—you love that little wife."
“Yes indeed I do."
“And you will take good care of her?
J * Yes, I will, as long as she lives," he said.
As long as she lives ! we repeated mental
ly, W hat a noble old fellow ! He deserves
to have a lovely young wife. While she lives
she is sure to possess a fair livelihood, and he
is thus providing a support for her after he
•hail have passed away ! “ What’s the a
amount ?" we asked aloud.
“ Two thousand,” he replied.
Two thousand is but one hundred and j
twenty* at six P er centum, we thought. That |
is scan ty. We felt disappointed.
“ Two thousand writ be a clever little sum
in such event,” said he.
“ It will be a help,” we replied ; “ it will
help."
“ Help," quoth he, “ It is much mere than
I had when I married my present wife. Two
thousand would then have been an induce
ment, but I got along without it. I will be
•older and need it next time."
** What! do you mean to say you have been I
getting your wife’s life insured !'' we exclaim- ■
ed.
“ But I do, though," said he. “ I never
shall get such another, and a couple of thou
sand may be necessary to enable me to secure
any at all. I know well the value of a wife."
Wilkesbarre Republican.
A Ludicrous Combat. — They had funny
ways of settling vexed love suits in old times.
Here is an instance, which we cut from an ex
change :
► ««Two gentlemen of high birth, the one a
•Spaniard and the other a German, having ren
dered Maximilian 11. many services, they each,
ifor recompense, demanded his natural daugh
ter, Helena Schasequin, in marriage. The
prince, who entertained equal respect for them
bot. I ’* could not give either the preference,
and ar*er much delay he told them that from {
,L a „lainis they both had to his attention and
St couli not give hi. assent for either
Os them to marry daughter, and they must
decide it by their own prowess and address;
but as he did not wi>h to risk the loss ot
either, or both, by suffering them to fight
with offensive weapons, he had ordered a large
b3K to be brought, and he who was successful
enough to put his rival into it, should obtain
his daughter. This strange combat between
two gentlemen was in the presence of the
whole Imperial court, and lasted half an hour.
At length the Spaniard yielded to the Ger
man, Andre Eithard, Baron of Etherd, who,
when he had got him into the bag, took him
on his back and placed him at the Emperor's
feet, and on the following day married the
beautiful Helena. _
Anecd .te A wag had kept up a continual
fire of writticismß at a social party, when
a puritanical gentleman, who enjoyed sermons
and snuff better than jokes and puns, sharply
you keep or, you will make every decent
person leave the house.
x r «»That would be a sorry joke," was the dry
r*»nlv. “for you would certainly be very lone
some when left here alone."

ELECTRIC WASHING FLUID,
For washing in hard or soft water.
f I'HIIS is the only genuine article to be found
JL in the world ; and possesses double the pow
er of any thing ever discovered ior washing
clothes, at a trifling expense, doing away with
wash boards at once. In fact, it seems to be the
I long sought Phi osopher’s Stone, or universal sol
vent; seeming a magical preparation, its opera
tion being ©f the most astonishing character. A
common sized washing may be done with one gill
of this Fluid, in ioss than two hours. It softens
and removes the dirt, leaving the articles of the
most, brilliant whiteness. It being as harmless in
its operations as pure water, and clothing will
wear mueh longer than when i übbed to pieces by
the common method of washing.
This Fluid is a powerful agent, to be used in all
cases where soap is required, particular I }’ for
cleansing milk utensils, cleaning windows and
scouring floors; in short, it is beyond a pre
j,nt, as its use is universal in the washing world.

* *l7^©H of the Liver and to purifv
’ JL 1 the Blood. 1 y
Dr. D. has made his preparation as pure as pos
sible. Its bitter taste corresponding with the
- taste oi thenroots, proves its purity. Its beneficial
effects in diseases ©t the Liver prove it to be the
most useful preparation of Sarsaparilla that is
■ made.
[ j The prevalence of diseases in the Southern cli
. mate, arising from an inactive >tate of the Liver,
: and the effect of this Sarsaparilla in stimulating
' the Liver to increased action, causing by its alte
l rative and mildly purgative effect the removal of
. morbific agents from the Blood, have induced tbe
Proprietor to use the pure Sarsaparilla and noth
tng eise in this preparation.
For other diseases Physicians using this prepa
ration in their practice can combine, or prescribe
with it such articles as they may consider the most
appropriate in cases under their treatment.
As those who use the Georgia Sarsaparilla and
find benefit from its use-—recommending it to
others, giid the fast increasing demand, provesthat
the labors of the Proprietor to make a good article
have been du y appreeia ed by fcv uthern people,
there is need of publishing certificates. North

IN QUART BOTTLES.
For THE REMOVAL AND PERMANENT CURE OF
ALL DISEASES ARISING FROM AN
IMPURE STATE OF THE BLOOD,
OR HABIT OF THE SYSTEM.
AMONG the many and important discoveries
of this i eneration, is one whose fame will
he written, as with a sunbeam, in the history of
the past. SANDS’ SARSAPARILLA stands
forth alone, and by its own works proclaims its
power—that mute eloquence so irresistibly effect
ing in the appeals of the suffering for releif, has
been answered. Thousands of cases of disease
have been cured by this >nvaluable medicine, such
as are not furnished in the records of time. These
things are nut done in secret places, or in some
unknown town, but are performed in our princi
pal cities and public places. (/They are brought
before the world to substantiate, beyond doubt, the
healing virtues of this preparation ; and the facts
unfolded, althiugh gigantic, are as plain as the
light of day.
The Saisaparilla is combined with the most ef
fectual aids, the most saiutary productions, the
most potent simples of the vegetable kingdom ;
and its unprecedented success in the restoration
to health of those who had long pined tinder the
most distressing chronic maladies, has given it an
exalted character—furnishing, as it does.evidence
of its own intrinsic value, and recom i ending it to
the afflicted in terms the afflicted only can know.
It has long been a most important desideratim in
the practice of medicine, to obtain a remedy sim
ilar to this—one that would act on the liver, stom
ach, and bowels with all the precision and potency
of mineral preparations, yet without any of their
deleterious effects upon the vital powers of the
system Although po sessed of p iwerfnl healing
properties, it is entirely harmless, and will not in
jure the most delicate constitution. When in per
fect health, no effect is produced by its use, ex
cept aa increase cf appetite ; but when disease to
seated in the frame, and carrying fast its victim
along the path of lifelien its mjsterious influ
ence is felt and seen ; it enkindles new life and
vigor, and brings health and strength to the suffer
ing and diseased.
SCROFULOUS AFFECTION OF THE EYES.
Winchester, Ky , Oct 29,1849.
A. B. & D. Sands— Gentlemen: 1 would not
have presumed to write to you, if it was not my
duty to let the public know the almost miraclous
effect your Sar»apariua has had upon me. My
limbs were covered with ulcerous sores, so that I
could not walls during be whole spring and sum
mer. In this situation I commenced the use of
your Sarsaparilla, and after taking two bottles w as
entirely cured. I must al o tell you of another
wonderful cure. My brother was afflicted with
this scrofula in his herd, so bad his physician told
him the loss of his sight was inevitable, and perm
anent blindness seemed jo be his fat i. Three bot
tles entirely rest, red hjs sight, and we cannot but
recommend ail similarly afflicted to use bands’
Sarsaparilla. Yours truly.

unable to sleep. I tried all of the best medicines
I could hear of without receiving any benefit un
tii through the advice of a friend 1 procured some
of your Sarsaparilla, and after using four bottles
in the course of fiftaen days I found myself en
tirely well. I haye no hes tation in saying your
Sarsaparilla is the best medicine l ever took, and
can confidently recommend it to my friends and
the public. Your obedient servant.

Here is another, nearer home ;
New York, Jan. Bth, 1850.
Messrs. Sands— Gentlemen: I have great plea
sure in acknowledging to you the great benefit 1
have received from the use of your Sarsaparilla
A subject of pulmonary disease, 1 made a voyage
to Europe, but while there continued to be afflict
ed. A few weeks after my return, 1 was seized <
with a violent hemorrhage of the lungs, and from
the debility and great prostration of strength that
followed, with the pretracted difficulty of respira
tion, 1 am entirely relieved by the use of your
Sarsaparilla, which I consider a most important
and truly valuable discovery in the healing art.—
I feel that I have not for fourteen years enjoyed
so good health as at present.
Yery gratefully yours, S. E. SEYMORE.
