ot the fact that my name wag made use of as
•n amateur, in order to attract the attention
of the public, by the introduction of some*
thing new upon the stage, and make it a pro
fitable night for Mr. Adams. If he did not
think it would prove lucrative, does any one
suppose he would have permitted an amateur
to be announced on the night of his, benefit?
(and this is a great night with actors.) Sure
ly not. Now Mr. Adams asserts that in the
publication of my card, (of which he com
plains so bitterly,) that 1 manifest a disposi
tion to assume all the honor which arose
from the announcement of an amateur’s in
tention to personate “The Stranger,” and
that he needs no better evidence than my
note to him, declining to apperron the stage.
This is strange reasoning, indeed, and more
particularly so, as I declined all the honor
that could have been obtained by an associa
tion with Mr. A. or his dramatic corps, in the
▼ery note that he attempts to bring in as evi
dence of my having claimed honors not alto
gether due.
Those who are better acquainted with me
than Mr. Adams, are, I am fully persuaded,
concious of this fact, that I would not de
signedly injure Mr. Adams, nor would I
knowingly suffer Mr. A. or any one else to
practice a piece of deception on the public
through the supposed agency of mine. Wheth
er such a thing was designed or not, Mr.
Adams best knows, and the public are at lib
erty to form their own judgment from the
facts already mentioned. My name was not
circulated through the street after I had no
tified Mr. A. of my intention not to appear,
■without some design. This gave me reason
to complain £and suspect,) and I did com
plain through the press, in order that no one
should be deceived.
His insinuation in reference to motives on my
part , is without meaning, and therefore I know
not how t notice it, and his recommenda
tion to .seek some other channel for populari
ty, I will .treat in the same manner, and as I
shall treat him hereafter, with the ulmost
contempt.
Before closing these remarks, 1 must assure
Mr. A. that he was mistaken in supposing
my vanity prompted me to believe myself the
only young man, in this vicinity, prepared to
play “The Stranger.” It was not my vanity,
but it was the went of confidence in certain
declarations. There may be those cf your ac
quaintance, in Augusta, “ burning with the
fire of their own genius..” I know not to
whom you allude; but I know one thing,
an application of the torch of truth, and
« little of the fire of common honesty,
wouid also have a tendency “to make philo
sophers” and purify the “ideal beauty of one's
own imagination.” “He that wins laughs.”
You know the phrase. That you are not pre
pared to laugh I kn 3W fall well; the reason is
obvious, you were not permitted to make use
of a name lor selfish purposes. After you. had
received timely notice which fully enabled
you to present an other play, “or introduce an
other Amateur,” either of which having
bsen done, I am forced to conclude “that all
was not right.” C. VV. STYLL&.
