Augusta Market, May 30—F* M
COTTON—There has been a good demand to
day, and the sales made were at the prices cur
rent yesterday.
CHARLESTON, May 30.— Cotton. —When we
closed our former i epjrt the market was in an
unsettled and depressed condition, owing to the
unfavorable accounts bronght out by the steamer
Africa, which had but just reached us, and the
few sa es made on Thursday, the last day of the
week shewed a decline of j) to 4c. on previous tran
sactions. The advices also exercised a control
ling influence over the market in the early part
of the present week. During the first days, viz:
Friday and Saturday, the aggregate sales did not
exceed 1,000 bales, and buyers obtained eyen
moie favorable terms ; but great as was the
sacrifices submitted to at the time by selleis,
prices were soon destined to reach a much lower
point. On Saturday the Baltic's accounts com?
to hand, advising of quite a heavy concession on
the other side, in favor of buyers, besides which
the general features of th? news were of such a
character, as to impair, if not destroy confidence
in Cotton, and the sales of Monday were limited
te some 700 bales. Prices during the day were
unsettled, the average concession was put
down at fully three quarter cent, on previous sales.
Thus stood the position of the market, when the
trade were put in possession of the very favorable
advict s brought by the Canada, which at once re
established confidence and materially enhanced
the value of the article. A good demand imme
diately followed the receipt of this intelligence,
and upwards of 1700 bales were taken on Tues
day at an advance nearly equal to the previous
decline. The market was wed attended by pur
chasers on Wednesday and Thursday, but the ad
vancing tendency in prices, coupled with the com
paratively small stock offering, lim ted the sales
to about 1100 bales on the former and 1200 on the
latter day. The market has been unsettled for
the common qualities, and since the arrival of the
Canada’s news, the higher grades, which are
scarce, hive either been withdrawn, or such lim
its have been put upon them as to plate them be
yond the views of buyers, and present quotations
for these grades must be consideied nominal. —

There has been but little change in our Produce'

Bacon has advanced a shade; we quote it this

these rates.
Lard lias also advanced; we quote it now at 11£

Other articles remain without ?ny change worth
noting.
