Great Drought in Mexico.—We are permit ed (says the N. O. Picayune.) to make the fol lowing extract from a letter, dated Zacatecas, May 13th, to a commercial house of this city: “We are in a most miserable state here at pre sent. We have had no rain of any consequence since August last, and the country is actually burnt up. Many of our roads are impassable for want of water. Corn is $6 50 per fanega, (about 150 pounds,) and in some parts of the State of Zacatecas is selling at $9. Flour just ground down is worth S2O per 300 pounds, and other things in proportion. The loss of animals would not be credited in any other place. We know of one estate which lost 1.400 head of sheep in March last, and has been worse since. Os course there is literally no trade at present, as the people are either maintained by charity, or are eating every thing that comes in their way. Every day until it rains will be worse, and we cannot expect any commercial prosperity until another and a good harvest of Indian corn is gathered.— On the 25th ult. we had a sharp frost, ■which has injured the wheat crop. This is produced by ir rigation, and was just caught in the ear. :? Dreadful, Mortality. —The Louisville Cour ier of the 3d inst. says : We learn that the steamer Grand Turk, from New Orleans, with a large number of emigrants on board for St. Louis, lost 25 or 30 of her passen gers by the cholera before the boat reached Cairo. Seventeen had died before the arrived at Napo leon, and the disease was then raging terribly on board. These unfortunate creatures were trans ferred from an emigrant vessel at New Orleans, suffering with the ship fever, and most of them were in a deplorable condition. The disease that proved so fatal must have been a combination of ship lever and cholera. The boat was very much crowded, which but added to the fatality. Special notices. The Democratic and Southern Rights Party of Henry County, will assemblo in the Court House at McDonough, on the first Tuesday in July, to appoint Delegates to attend the Convention to be held at Newnan, to nominate a candidate for Con gress for the Fourth District, and to make arrange ments for county nominations. ctd June 13 EC?” We are authorize to announce the name of Brigadier General STEPHEN DRANE, as a can didate for Major General to command tho Second Division of Goorgia Militia. junc 11 QE7“Notice. —Post Office, Augusta, June 2d, 1851.—0 n and after this date, the Western Mail will close at 3 P.
