MARRIED.
In Forsyth, Ga., on the 4th inst., by the Rev. W.
D. Atkinson, Mr. Robert Phillip, of Augusta, to
MissSELETA Foster, of the former place.
OBITUARY.
Common as death is, it is always a source ol re
gret to record the evidences of his triumphs. No
matter whether his victim, be advanced manhood,
whom hoary age has ripened for the grave, or in
nocent childhood, ere yet it has taken part in the
cares of life and drawn around it the affections of
society, still the hearts of surviving friends mourn j
the bereavement. But how sad it is, to consign Jo
the tomb one, in the meridian of life, in the spring- |
tide of usefulness, bound to society by many ties of
interest and friendship, and whose prospect is gilded
by whatever can inspire hope and impart energy in
the prosecution of laudable enterprise. And how
much sadder still, to contemplate the “aching void' 7
which such a bereavement leaves in the family cir
cle.
But it were better not to sketch, even if it were
possible to pourtray the picture. Silence here,
though by its eloquence it fail to utter the tendered
sympathies of condoling friends, possesses at least,
this merit; that it does not tear open the wounds of
the widowed heart, which language is too poor to
soothe.
These reflections arc suggested by the death of
CHARLES S. HAWLEY; Esq. He was a native
of Pennsylvania, and reared and educated in Phil
adelphia. In childhood, it was his misfortune to be
deprived of all his near relations; and it was his
fate to be thrown upon the career of life without
fortune and without patronage. Ab'out ton years
ago, he came to Georgia, and endowed with a lib
eral education, he turned his attention to the study
of law, and was admitted to the bar in 1843. He
located in Hawkinsvilles, in the county of Pulaski,
and for several years prosecuted his profession with
that success which is always the rew T ard of energy
and promptitude.
Campbell, and in 1850 removed to this city to pur- •
sue his profession. Although comparatively a
stranger in the community, by his affability of man
ner and diligence in business, he made many friends
and won rapidly upon tho public confidence. Pos
sessing great activity of mind, he was never idle,
and endowed with business capacity, he embraced
with intuitive facility every opportunity of engag
ing in profitable enterprise. If talent, energy and
integrity are guarantees of usefulness and success,
he had the promise of a brilliant career. But in
exorable death has brought it to an early termina
tion, and with his mortal remains, has consigned his
plans, hopes and aspirations to the sleep of the
tomb.
He expired at his residence, in this city, on the
evening of the sth inst., after a protracted and pain
ful illness. A widowed heart bleeds under the in
flicted blow, and the ills of orphanage are entailed
upon two little ones, too tender to appreciate a fath
er’s love and a father’s care.
The funeral throng which followed his coffin to
the grave, evinces at once the sympathy for the be
reaved, and the public respect for the departed.—
May the Lord “temper the wind to tho shorn
lamb,’ and by this afflictive dispensation, impress
upon all the solemn truth, that “ in the midst of life
we are in death.' 1

CEommmial,
Augusta Market, June 13—P. M.
COTTON. —The demand continues steady for
qualities above Middling Fair at the prices of yes
terday. Extremes from 6to cents.
CHARLESTON, June 13.— Cotton. —When we
closed our inquiries preparatory to our report of the
6th inst., the market was very quiet. The Asaia’s
advices had but just reached us, and although they
were adverse to the Cotton interest, they made no
impression whatever on the market, at least so far
as the higher qualities were concerned, which were
the only grades inquired for, and which from their
great scarcity fully sustained their former position,
middling fair at the time being valued at 9J a 9| ;
and fair and fully fair 92 a lOe. The present week
opened with a very limited demand, the transactions
on Friday having been confined to about 400 bales,
at about the above range of figures. On Saturday
we were put in possession of the accounts brought
out by the Pacific, showing an improvement of an
one-eighth pence in prices on the other, which
were corrobrated and sustained by the more re
cent arrival of the steam ship America, but they
seem to have produced no favorable impression on
the market, on the contrary an adverse influence
has been exercised over prices, owing to the with
drawal, in a great measures, of buyers, and the con
sequent depression that has marked the course of
trade during this period, at least so far as the mid
dling and lower qualities are to be taken into the
account, and our quotations for these grades must
for the present be considered nominal, at a decline
of | to 2c. on the prices current this day weok. —
There has been some little inquiry for the higher
qualities, principally for Spanish account, and
as we said before, the very limited amount
on sale has enabled holders to obtain full prices.
The receipts of the week embrace 3425 bales, and
the gales in the corresponding period foot up 3518
Jjales, as follows: 2 hales at 6 ; 138 at 6J ; 12 at 6f;
231 at 6} ; 25 at 6f; 126 at 61; 209 at 7; 54 at 7|’;
32 at 7} ;40at7| ;9 at 71; 75 at 7|; 155 at 8; 152
at 8j ; 228 at 8j ; 54 at 8g ; 80 at 8* ; 39 at 8# ; 130
at 82 ; 85 at 8f ; 151 at 9 ; 43 at 9J ; 7 at 9} ; 100
at 9|; 152 at 9£ ; 730 at 9|; 70 at 9f ; and 371 bales
at 10c. We quote Middling to Good Middling Bj|a
9; Middling Fair 91 a 9}; and Fair and Fully
Fair 92 a 10c.
Corn. —Some 4500 bushels Western, held over
from the previous week, have been sold at 68c
The receipts since our last reach 6000 bushels Mary
hand, which have been sold at prices ranging from
66 to 67c.; 3100 do. North Carolina, sold at 65c. and
• 3000 do. do. a mixed lot, at 64c- per bushel.
? Bacon. —The stock of Sides and Shoulders are
I rather heavy than otherwise, and to effect sales,
holders have to submit to a reduction on previous
prices. We learn that about 150 hhds. Sides have
been sold—part to arrive and part on hand—at 9 2c.
We have no transaction to report in Shoulders, pri
ces of which are depressed, and present quotations
are nominal.
Freights. —Tho rate of frieght to Liverpool for
Cotton in square bags has dropped from a Id. to 3
16ths, which is the rate at the close of the week.
There is very little offering for coastwise shipment,
and present quotations are nominal.

reported yesterday was one small lot at 82 cents.

GEORGIA—RICHMOND COUNTY!
The Grand Jury of the first week, respectfully
report:
That they have examined into the condition of
the Clerk s Office of the Superior and Inferior
Courts and of the Court of Ordinary, and find the
same well arranged for the convenience and accom
modation of the public, the Records in a good state
of preservation, and kept in a very neat and correct
manner.
The Committee appointed to examine into tho
condition of the County Jail, report the Jail and
premises as being in a neat and clean condition, and
reflects credit upon tho management of the present
Jailor. There are at present 15 persons confined
in the Jail, who are as comfortable as circumstan
ces will permit: among them is a white female, not
charged with any offenee, who is reported to be in
sane, and we recommend that she he transferred to
the Asylum, or other more suitable place of con
finement as soon as possible.
The Roads generally, are represented as being in
good order, with the exception of the Waynesboro 1
Road, it being too narrow for the amount of travel
passing over it, and we therefore recommend its
being widened as early as convenient. The Sand
Hills Road, at Stovall’s corner, is represented as
being in want of repairs to prevent future damage
to the Plank Road.
The Bridges over Spirit Creek, at McDade’s
Mills, and the Butler's Creek Bridge, are reported
in very bad order, and wo recommend that imme
diate attention bo paid to them by the proper au
thorities.
The Jury respectfully tender their appreciation of
his Honor Judge Starnes’ charge at the opening
of our service, and regret that the civil business of
the Court prevented as .general an attention to all
the subjects of the charge as it deserved. They also
beg leave to acknowledge his, and the Attorney
Generals courtesy towards us during our service.
