We were presented yesterday with a stalk of
Cotton, in bloom, from the plantation of M. D.
Rogers. Esq., Bryan Co., G. W. Johnston mana
fer. The stalk ‘is only twenty-four inches high,
ut is well limbed, and covered with blossoms
and forms. From the accompanying note ad
dressed to us we make the following extract:
“Suffering extremely in Bryan and Liberty
Counties for rain-had none for weeks. Cattle
and hogs nearly perishing.— Sav. News, June 12.-
Extract from a letter from a well informed
planter in Burke county, dated 9th June:
“ The crops of Corn and Cotton are both very •
poor for the time of the year. We have had six
weeks drought, and every thing is almost ruined
in this part of the country. Com and Cotton
small and of a sickly appearance, and the stands
are worse than I have ever seen.’ 7

Spurious Bank Note. —A spurious note, pur
porting to be a One Hundred Dollar bill of the
Merchants’ Bank of South Carolina at Cheraw,
was received at the Bank of Charleston yester
day in a remittance. The signatures of the of
fficers are bad imitations, but we deem it unne
cessary to go into a further description, as the
Merchants’ Bank have never issued notes of the
denomination of One Hundred Dollars.— Ch.

Tis Grease! but Living Grease no More!' 1 ' 1 —
The Buffalo Courier gives an amusing account
of a gentleman who mounted a barrel of lard to
hear and see, on the arrival of the Mayflower,
with the President and suite, on Friday. Just
as he was listening with great unction to the
speeches, the barrel head gave way and he Jslid
easily and noiselessly up ;to his “third button 77
in the ‘great staple of Ohio’ exclaiming: “L a-r-d
have mercy on us!”
The servant of a Prussian officer one day met
a crony, who inquired of him how he got along
with is his fiery master, “ Oh, excellently,” an
swered the servant.; “we live on very friendly
terms; every morning we beat each other’s coats;
the only difference is, he takes his off to be beat
en and I keep mine on.”
A young lady asked Old Roger the reason why
a man loved his second wife the best. He was
taken rasher aback by the question. It was a
matter that he knew uothing about, for he had
all his life persisted in saying that he had no in
terest in the estate of wedlock, yet he ventured
an answer. “Why, my dear,” said he, “I sup
pose it is because a man prefers a living wife.”
The Talcott Court Martial. —lt is stated
that the Court Martial of General Talcott has
been ordered by General Scot t in consequence of
a charge preferred by the Secretary of War, of
insubordination and disrespect, in refusing to
submit certain contracts for the approval of the
Secretary.
DIED.
At “Indian Springs” Butts County, on the morn
ing of the 7th instant, Mrs. VALINDA, wife of Dr.
Henry Branhan, of Eatonton, Putnam County.
Departed this life, on the 4th inst., Sarah Ann,
wife of James W. Moridoth, jr., in the 25th year of
her age.
Suddenly called to affliction’s couch, yet she was
found prepared and ready, with Christian meekness,
to suffer the will of her Redeemer. Great were her
bodily sufferings, yet she complained not of them;
but with a strong and confident faith in the promises
made by her Saviour, she abided the tiino when her
released spirit should take its departure and claim
its seat in Abraham’s bosom.
But to the living, how great is the void thus made
by the severance of these earthly ties! But a few
days past how much of earth’s happiness was con
templated by a fond and doating husband. But she,
who was to have been the sharer of his earthly joys,
has passed away to regions of true and everlasting
bliss above. May the remembrance of her merits
as an affectionate wife, her resignedxand Christian
departui'e of this lift* tend to assuage the feelings of
all earthly grief, and be conducive to a blissful re
union in the kingdom to come. J. E. M.
