How DO MEN GENERALLY GET THEIR tV'IVES.
Where do men usually discover the women who
afterwards become their wives? is a question
we have occasionally heard discussed, and the
result invariably come to, is worth mentioning to
our lady readers. Chance has much to do in the
affair; but then there are important governing
circumstances. It is certain that few men make
selections from ball-rooms, or anj r other places of
public gayety; and nearly as few arc- influenced
by what may be called showing off in streets or
by any allurements of dress. Our conviction is
that 99-lOOths of the finery with which women
decorate or load their persons, go for nothing as
far as husband catching is concerned. Where,
and how then, do men find their wives ? In the
quiet home of their parents or guardians—at the
fireside, where the domestic graces and feelings
are alone demonstrated; these are the charms
which most surely attract the high as well as the
humble. Against these, all the finery and aij-s
in the world sink into insignificance.
Recipe for Snake Bite. —A subscriber wri
ting us from up the river, says that one of his
children, a small lad, was bitten a few days since
by a poisonous snake, and in fifteen minutes af
terwards his arm was swollen almost to bursting,
but by a very simple remedy he was entirely re
lieved in a short time. He sends us the follow
ing recipe, which may not be generally known,
and as it may be of importance we give it a place
in our columns.
Cottonwood leaves beaten up or bruised, to
which add sweet milk. Let the person bitten
drink of this, and at the same time apply it ex
tensively to the wound,— N. O. Picayune.
Christian Anti-Slavery Convention. —A
Convention of Christians of all denominations,
who believe the system of slaveholding to be
sinful, is called to be held at Chicago, 111., on the
3d of July next. We learn from the Oberlin
Evangelist that arrangements are being made for
conveying the delegates at half price. Through
tickets can be had from Cleveland for $5. The
Golden Rule says: “If we rightly understand,
this meeting is not merely Anti-Slavery, but an
ti-sin, a meeting of general reform, a united, con
centrated onset against all sin, the works of dark
ness and death.
Real and Ideal. —Dow, J ~ in one of his dis
courses, in which he describes the contrasts be
tween semblance and reality, hits off a ball scene:
" A woman,'’ says he, “ may not be an angel,
though she glides through the mazes of the dance,
like a spirit clothed with a rainbow, and studded
with stars. The young man may behold his ad
mired object on the morrow in the true light of
reality, perchance emptying a wash tub in the
gutter, with frock pinned up behind—her cheeks
pale for the want of paint—and her hair mussed
and mossy, except what lies in the bureau; and
her whole contour wearing the appearance of an
angel rammed through a brush fence, into wretch
edness and woe!”
Fine Peaches.—We are indebted to Mr, G.
E. Ring. 291 King-street, for a sample of re
markably large and delicious peaches. He in
forms us that he will be regularly supplied with
this fine fruit which will be on sale at his store.

Death of Judge Mounger.—The Paulding,
Miss., Clarion comes to us with its columns in
mourning for the death of the Hon. Henry Moun
fer. He departed this life, at his residence near
’adding, on the 10th instant, in the 47th year
cl his age. He was a native of Georgia; emigrat
ed to Mississippi in 1834; was appointed by Gov.
McNutt, and then elected by the people, Judge
of the 4th Judicial District, for four years, after
wards pursued the practice of Ins profession very
successfully, and in April last was nominated as
the Southern Rights candidate for the State Con
vention from Jasper county. He died greatly re
gretted, leaving a widow and eight little chil
dren.

Pendulum Experiment. —The Pendulum ex
periment was tried this morning at the Circular
Church, under the direction of Robert C. Gile
brist, Esq., of this city. It proved eminently
successful, adding another proof of Foucoult’s in
teresting proof of the Earth’s rotary motion. The
Pendulum is 52 feet long, and vibiates over an
arc of six feet. The ball is 12 lbs. weight.
We are pleased to record the first successful at
tempt to demonstrate the truth of this experi
ment by a youthful townsman, whose mechani
cal ingenuity is of flattering promise.— Charles
ton News , 2 6th inst.
Good Throwing.— -The Cumberland (Md.)
Alleganian says the Mountaineer fire company
of that place have a small suction (built some
six years ago in Baltimore, by Mr. Simpson,)
which throws 165 feet on a level, and higher
than they have the means of measuring.
