MANCHESTER. -Steam Coaches. —-On Monday
last, a first trial was made of a steam-coach designed by
Mr. Roberts, of this town, and made at the work shop of i
Messrs. Sharp, Roberts, and Co. which made a short
trip along Oxford-road and back to the works. The car
raige itself is, we believe, much larger, stronger, and
'heavier than any ol those which have been tried in oth
er places. It is calculated to convey thirty.five passen
gers, with which, and the necessary supplies of coke and
■water, it is estimated to weigh about nine tons. On
this occasion, however, it was loaded very considerably
beyond the estimated amount, having sometimes about
fitly persons upon it together with a number of tools and
other matters which had been taken out to provide a
gainst accidents. Altogether the carriage and load pro. |
hably weighed about eleven tons, and this enormous
weight was moved along the road in some instances at j
the rate of twelve miles an hour; and when the steam 1
was full up, that is a' 80 lbs an the square inch, it mount
ed the hill near the factory of the Oxford Road Twist '
Company, at a very good speed, although it had been j
stopped in the middle of the ascent for want of steam.
'On the whole we consider the experiment to have been |
decidedly favourable; inasmuch ns we think it showed
pretty clearly that very considerable weights may be
moved with great facility, and, as far as the consumption
of fuel goes, at a very small expense, on common roads.

i CHARLESTON, MARCH 10.— Cotton.— During the first two
1 days of the past week, a brisk demand existed for this staple, at j
the full prices of the preceding week. On Wednesday morning, I
accounts from Liverpool to the 18th January came to hand, which
\Vere unfavorable, announcing a decline of about }d per lb. This )
put a stop to business for that day— not over 100 bates having been |
disposed of, which were at a decline of about }th» of a cent. On
Thursday, purchasers again cam* briskly into the market, and the
sales during the remainder of the week were to a fair extent at pri
ces from 1 to} below the rates ot Monday, on middling and inferior
qualities—prime and choice descriptions being very scarce, holders
were more firm, and we observe little difference in the rates paid,
from those demanded before the receipt of the English accounts.
The total sales of Uplands, amounted to 5653 b iles, of which up
wards (if SdUO were disposed of on Monday and Tuesday. The
following are the particulars : —l9 bales at 9A—42 at 10—13 at 10}

criptions, and at former prices. Santees continue of ready sale.

SAVANNAH, MArch 8. — I otton. —There was a very good de
mand for Uplands during the first part of the week, and the full
prices of last week wereeasilt obtained. On Thursday we receiv
ed advices from Liverpool via Plymouth, Eng. to the IBth Janua
ry, which are considered unfavorable, and we have heard of no
sa'es ofiinporiaii'ce since. We understand that some lots have
been offered fit A cent, below ihe prices that could have been ob
tained previously. The sales for the week amount to about 3000
bales at 93 Al 2 and 12} a l2i for choice, —principally at 11 a 11}
cents. The arrivals continue light and the stock for sale is very
small. It is probable that buyers wil: keep out of the market un
til direct and later advices are received from Liverpool. In Sea
Islands there is a moderate busines doing at all prices within the
range of qilotalidils. We quote 21 a ,5, and upwards for choice
brands. ...

Intellgence from Liverpool to the 24th, and from Havre so the
26th December, advising an advance in cotton in those markets,
has occasioned during the past week, quite an animated demand
for Ihe article here, and sales amounting to 4500 or 5000 hhles have

BALTIMORE, Feb. 28. [General remark. —The operatiHlls of
the market are greatly restricted, and, in frequent instances; ehtire
|y prevented, from the scarcity of money. Both buyers and sellers
continue to avoid, as much as possible, opetitions , n time. Under
these circumstances the prices of most articles, and especially of
domestic produce, are depressed, and Some latitude must be allow
ed between cash and credit quotations.]
Coffee. —There appears to he a somew hat improved disposition
manifested by the trade to operate. About 600 to 800 hags Rio
have been taken at 12} a 12} cents for good to prime new crop, and
at 12 cents lor old crop. A lot of JOO hags La Guayra was sold a
12 a 12} cents. A sale of good St. Domingo was made at 11} cents,
and a lot of 100 hags on terms nearly approaching that price. Small
lots of Java Coffee are selling at 13 cents. At auction today 20

Cotton. —Small sales were made this week of Mobile, at l3Acts.
and of Georgia Uplands at 13 cents.
Howard street Flour. —The wagon price has declined to $4,50,
and is now uniform at that price. A part of the receipts goes into
store ori account of the country owners. There is no demand of
mohient train stores. Sales of several hundred bids, have been
made at $4,75, in Small lots. Transactions are said to have taken
place at other rates, but we cannot make them out.
Molasses. —At auction yesterday 30 hhds. and 24 tierces new
