TUe Wreckers.
BY JAMES SHERIDAN KNOWLES.
“ Silence, again !” cri-al the wrecker.
—“Gold !* exclaitnerf he to himself, as he
emptied into his hand a portion of the
comehts of a purse, winch he had token
from the others packet —“ broad, heavy,
yellow pieces!” another laugh liom the
‘maniac.
“ I tell thee what, mad Kate,” roared
the wrecker, “take to thy heels! ora
hide the consequence, if thou interest that
sound again?”
“Softly! —softly!” whispered Kate,
44 he hears you!”
“ Who jade?” cried the wrecker, star
ting from his knees.
“ The owner of the diamonds and the
gold. His lids have been moved for the
last minute, and now they are wide
open !”
The wrecker jus' glanced at the face
* of the shipwreekt d man.
“ Get thee away, good Kale'/ said
he, in a conciliatory lone. “ Go, Kate ;
leave me by mysell, and I’ll never be an
gry with theo again. Go, good Kate;
go.”
The maniac looked at thn wrecker
for a moment —smiled—nodded har head
signiheauily, and rose.
“ 1 am gone, Black Norris!” she cried, j
44 a good day to you ; and a good fair
t lay ii is! and lovely day ! Isn tit Black
Norris? I’ll leave you by yourself! I’ll
-not stay ! I am gone i” and starting to
ward a pathway which led np the cliff,
and the commencement of which was i
sheltered by a screen ot rock, she was
quickly out of sight.
Tlie wrecker now began to r< control Ire
nil around him. l.vcry one was or.gros
sed with his own occupation, securing
such portions ol lae w reck or such mo
des of property as were brought within
his reach, li.s hand approached his knife
—grasped it—half drew the weapon from
his' 1 belt.; but suddenly replaced it and
now fastened on the axe —ih« counter
poise to the blade of which was a wedge
like piece ol iron, broad and flattened at
the end. In a second the instrument
swung by his side. Once again ho re
connoitred toward the beech j then turn
ed towards the prostiate man. lie
thought tiie body moved —he trembled
from head to foot. He advanced a sin
gle step, but stopped—the fingers were
in motion ! —A low sound—half voice,
half breath —issued from the throat —
—which now evidently began to work !
He advanced another step—though a tot
tenng one! —another! Hu was now
within a loot or two of the head—he
sank, or rather dropped' upon one knee.
The eyes ot the seaman moved—they
turned to the right and to the left, and at
last glared back upon the wrecker! Both
hands now clenched the aYc! Slowly
’iwas lilted, the edge averted, and the
blunt end suspended over die forehead ol
him that lay. ’Twasiaised! It hover
ed a [moment or two, then fell with it
short, dull crash—a pause lor a moment
or two more—limb, eye, every thing were
still —the wrecker threw his we pon be
hind him, and wiped from his brow the
drops that stood thick upon it!”
“ Ha ! ha ! you have none it ?”
The wrecker turned and beheld the
maniac standing behind him with the
hatchet in her hand, her eyes fl. suing.
44 Nay, move not Black Norris!’" sue
continued, “unless you would hate me
givw the corpse a fellow ! Let me get
Farther from thee without forcing me to
do thee a mischief, and I will tell thee
something!” She retreated about twen
tv puces, without turning her back ;
the wrecker, now perfectly unnerved, not
daring to move. “Black Non is ! sue
resumed, 44 did 1 not tell you that ims
was a fair, lovely day !—and a fair, love
jy day it is ?—and a bunny one, too ! and
know you not why, Biack Norris? 1 iiis
day you have done —what you have
done! —and this day seven years was
the day—the fair, lovely day when you
murdered my father! Black Norris!
Now follow me not, but good by !
Bhe fled. The wrecker had dot pow
er to follow!
Bv the fire of a miserable hut, was
seated upon a stool a female, of youthful
but haggard appearance. She had an
infant at her breast, and was endeavour
ing to lull it, rocking to and fro, with a
low, melancholy hum. Every, now and
then, she paused and listened, and aft r
a second or two, resumed iter mateinal
quiet. Shark! be quiet!” she
would occasionally cry, as a 1 an, black
rou T hcoated dog, between the Newfouud
j-md and the mastiff, and which was
stretched across the hearth, would raise
his head, and, turning it in the direction
of the door, keep howling amidst the
gusts of the storm, which was slowly
andfitfoHy subsiding.
At length the infant fell asleep, end
fammaßmaßaa ma*mmcaa
was transferred from its mother’s lap to
a wretched palate in an adjoining room.
Her charge being thus disposed of, she
returned into the outer apartment. A
cooking-vessel was on the fire. She
lifted tlie lid. The steam faintly rose
from the contents.
44 Will it never grow hot!” she impa
tiently exclaimed, and resorting to a bel
lows, through tlie creviced sides of which
escaped the greater portion of the wind
which was intended for the proper vent,
proceeded assiduously hut almost in vain,
to urge the sluggish fuel. 41 He’ll brain
me, ifhe comes home and nothing ready?”
sae cried to herself, in a querulous under
tone. 44 Heaven send him luck, and I
shall have peace for a day or two.” con
tinued she. 44 Bat for mv baby, I wish 1
band never seen the face of Black
Norris !”
44 Let rne in !” cr.ed the wrecker at
the door.
“ Thank heaven, lie has met with
luck?”ejaculated tlie wretched wife.—
She let him in. He had a trunk upon
his shoulder, and under his arm he car
ried a bundle of clothes.
44 Good luck, Norris?” tremulously,
and halfdoubtingly, inquired she,
44 Yes!” was his sullen reply. Why
do you ask with such a face as that ?”
44 I was afraid you had not met with
any.”
“Why ?” demanded he, sternly.
44 From your looks,” timidly respond
ed she.
44 Curse thee !” muttered the ruffian :
44 what business hast tbou to mind my
looks? Here! Lend a band, and help
this load from my back !” The trunk
was deposited upon the floor. “What!
Nothing ready ? Hast thou not victuals
in the house ? Hast thou not fire? Has
thou not hands ? and why is not my din
ner ready? Bestir thee? I have some
thing to do in the nt xt room. On thy
life let me not be interrupted till I have
done. Haste! Give rne the key of the
big chest!”
44 Don’t wake the baby-!” inlreatingly
enjoined the wife. 44 He has not slept
the whole morning, and is only just now
dropped off. ’
“Curse the child I” cried the wrecker,
44 Thou thinkeU of noting but the child!
Look to my dinner !” He went in:o the
next apartment, shut the door after him
and bolted it.
He examined the jewels again. He
j emptied the p tie of its contents audeoan.
! ted them, tie opened the rest of the
pockets. The trousers he had taken
from the bundle and thrown upon the
floor of the oilier room—all contained
riches. He placed them upon ihc ground,
applied the key, and hastily began to
deposit them in the bottom of the chest.
In the progress of Ids work, he started
and stopped short, at a shuffling of feet
which he heard in the outer apartment,
accompanied by the sound of voices, as
of persons speaking in a low key. Mut
tering a curse lib proceeded.
| “Norris! Norris!” whispered his wife
;at the door. He replied not, but went on.'
j “Norris!”she whispered again. “You
| are wanted!” lie answered not, bat lis
"tened anxiously. Ail was silent.
“Norris! ’ she repeated.
“.Silence! and confound thee!” was the
juflian’s reply.
“I cannot hGp it, Norris!” rejoined she,
i still whispering. “You are wanted, hus
band! O come! Do come!”
4 Presently he vociferated. The last
article was put in. He locked tlie chest,
and unbolted the door, threw it open.
“Well ! Is my dinner ready ?” he noi
sily demanded, entering the outer apparf
ment, and looking towards the table —
which had been constructed out of the
fragments of a wreck—a corpse lay
stretched upon it! At the head and at
the foot was a group of his neighbors.—
He stood for a moment or two transfixed.
44 What means this?” at length he bold
ly inquired, with a loud voice, striving to
conceal a cowering heart,
“Merciful powers!” exclaimed one, 'ift
in:/ the rifled trousers, which the wreck
er had thrown upon tlie floor. “Merciful
powers? if it is not your father’s body,
Norris, that you have been stripping!”
“My fathers body echoed black Nor
ris; the blood utterly fora .king his cheeks.
“Yes! There it is, stretched upon the
table!”
Black Norris did not attempt to speak.
He looked at the body—at the by-stan
ders—at his wife —at the body again—
with an expression of perfect vacuity in
| his countenance. He then approached
’ the table, half seated himself on a corner
of it, his back to the corpse; and with one
I leg upon the floor, kept swinging the oth
er, looking wildly around him. His wife
’ who had dropped upon the stool on which
' she had been nursing her child, sat the
immage of horror. The rest kept si

“U can’t be helped!” at last exclaimed
Black Norris. '1 he dead have no use
for clothes. We’l! burv him to-morrow,
. and wake him to-night.”
His auditors looked at one another, but
i made no remark. Pipes, tobacco and
. soil its were, speedily procured and placed
i upon the same table with the corpse,
I which was now covered w ith a sheet.—
r Black Norris seated himself at the head.
I His neighbors, whose numbers were now
increased by occasional droppers-in, ac
- cornmodated themselves as thev could
; with stools, empty kegs placed on an end,
. and pieces of plank converted into turn
j porary forms sat ranged around. The
( room waxed merry, save where the
i wrecker’s wife sat crouching near the
i fire, her head supported by the wall. At
' length the first supply of spirits was out.
“I’ll bring you better!” cried the
! wrecker. “What we have been drink.

ing was watered. I’ll faring it to you as
pure as from the still!”
He disappeared; and, after the lapse cf
about ten or fifteen minutes, returned
will) a fresh supply. He opned the door
unobserved, bat stopt short upon remark
ing that the place which he had just quit
ted, was occupied bv three or four who
were intently employed in examining the
head of the dead body, from which tlie
sheet had been partially removed. The
rest ot the company were leaning For
ward, apparently absorbed in what was
passing.
44 Ids an ugly murk!” said one.
“No rock could do that!” observed an
other.
“No!” interposed a third; “tis more
like the blunt end of au- ax. l head; seel
here is tlie regular mark of the edge, all
round! I would not be Black Norris, for
uU he lias got by this day’s work!”
“Why no:?” vociferated the wrecker,
s; ringing forward and confronting the
speaker.
Every etc was turned toward the
wrecker, in whose countenance despa ra
tion and gathering fury were fearfully
depicted. No answer was returned to
his questien.
44 Why not!” repeated he, with increas
ed vehemence.
44 Why not!” echoed the young man,
recovering from his temporary surprise.
—“Why who!” was it stove your fath
er’s forehead in, Black Norris?” added
he, after a pause.
He had scarcely lime to duck his head.
The vessel -which the wrecker carried,
flew over it and in the next moment the
young man’s throat was in the rufliairs
gripe.
“Lose your hold of him!” cried several
voices ail at once. Black Norris paid no
heed to them. Throe or lour of tin? strong
est and coldest rustled together uponhim at
puce; overpowered him, and rescued his
almost suffocated victim. Tito wrecker
drew his knife and brandished it. They
rushed upon him again before he had time
to make a stroke with it, and wrenched it
from him. His wife, who, it appeared,
had retired into the inner appartment du
ring the interval of her husband’s absence
now burst from it, sunk cm her knees be
fore him, and clasping him round the legs
with one arm, while with the other she
supported herln imt implored him to be
calm. A blow levelled child and mo her
tot e earih! With horror at the savage
act, the spectators stood awhile, as if be
reft of tit*.* power of speech cr motion.
For a second or two the wrecker glared
aiound him like a fiend, then suddenly
vanished into the inner room. Me search
ed here and there, blaspheming all the
lime, cutsing this thing and that thing,
as anything came to his hand except what
he wanted. At length, however, he suc
ceeded in finding ids pistols. Then a
pouch filled with slugs; and, last of sih
a powder horn presented themselves.
Hastily ho loaded and primed the wea
pons, and proceeded to the door, with one
in each hand, advancing a pace into the
outer appartment —
“Now !” roared the wrecker, 4: now,
wiio is tlie man to come on !” No one
stirred. “I give you just as much time,”
continued he, “as it will take you to dear
the house. When that is expired, 1 lire
at the man that'remains.”
A wild, shrill, piercing laugh was the
answer to his menace, it came from tlie
head of the corpse. The maniac was
standing there. The wiecker’s axe was
in her hand; the blunt end resting on the
mark in the dead man’s forehead.
“Ha! ha!” she cried, cxultingiy; “there
is your father, Black Norris! a corpse
upon the plank of wood, to get possession
of which, you murdered my father; and
here is your axe upon the mark which
you made in your father’s forehead when
1 told you, as you were rifling him on the
beach, that his eyes were moving, and
and you coaxed me lo Lave you alone
with him! See how nicely it fits! But
I knew you, and stole back ! ! did, Black
Norris! And 1 saw the blow ? and heard
tile crash! and snatched np your hatchet
when you threw it behind you; and ran a
way with it! Give you joy of your dia
monds and your gold, Black Norris! A
fairday! isitnot?—A fair, lovelv, bonny
day !”
The wrecker had been gradually rais
ing his right arm. It was now nearly
brought to a level. He fired! but the
charge perforated the roof. His arm
was struck up by some one, and at the
same moment he felt himself powerfully
pinioned, fie looked round; he found
himself in the hands of (bur ol I tie preven
tive guard, accumpaned by Kate's lover,
with the staff of a boarding pike ia his
grasp.
That day, having completed the busi
ness which called him from home, had the
young man returned. His first inquiry
Nfas for Kate. She had been at her usual
pranks, anJ had stolen away. lie sought
her in all her haunts—she was no where
to be found —dispirited and fatigued, too,
for he had walked upward of thirty miles
since morning; lie was repairing home
when he received, from a gioup return
ing from tlie wreck, and of wh rt m he
made inquiries after her, an account of
her appearance among the wreckers, and
her wild, mysterious prophecy, which had
been so strangely fulfilled. Revolving
what he had heard, he lilted tho latch ot
his mother s door and entered ; but stop,
ped short. A female, almost naked to
ihe zone, was sitting with her buck to
ward him; her skin ol so pure a white
ness, that it fairly shone. The waist and
shoulders of su-*h a mould, as ol itseli’ap.
prists the beholder ot the presence ot
surprising richness ; although unrefined,
uninformed, he :s utterly at a loss to tell
in what it lies. A moment he stood; then,
abashed, confounded —he was on the point

i of retiring, when the female turned sad
denlv round.
“Plate !” burs’ in astonisfensnt from the
young m ni’s lips.
The n -xt moment the nlaniac, uncon
scious of her situation, was hanging upon
his neck. Wildly she kissed him; strain
ing him to her bosom and laughing.
“He has done it! ha has done it!” site
almost shrieked. ’ “He has murdered his
own father. FTere is the hatchet with
whieh lie beat Ids forehead in,” addad she,
springing from him to the other end of the
room, and snatching up the instrument
and fl »;irisking it ; her sun burnished
hands and nock forming an extraordinary
contrast with the snow which had n j vcr
been before revealed to the eyes of her
lover, . hose mother now entering from
an adjoining room with s-n.ns articles of
apparel upon her arm, hastily* retired n
gam. drawing the poor, half resisting girl
along with her. The former presently
returned.
“.She had been down on the s!u?re all
day'. There has been a wreck, said she.
“About a quarter of an hour ago she came
in inquiring for you, that you might take
Black Norris, us she said, and hang him ;
for he had murdered ids father. She was
wet to the skin with the spray and the
rain, and I was making her change her
sell when you came in.—Hist! she is
here! ’
Kate entered. Her lover looked at her.
Nothing appeared now, bat the line that
was tiie child ofthe weather. The hatch
at was in her hand. Exultation and im
patience were painted in her looks.
“Come ! coma !” she cried ; and open
ing the i.oor, at once led the way to Black
Norris’s. Scarcely had they got fifty
yards from tho house, when, at a turn in
tho road, they came upon four privates
of tlie preventive service. The mo.i were
on duty'. Kale instantly accosted them,
related the transaction which had taken
place upon tlie reef, and commanded them
lo accompany her. They looked—and
obeyed.
Three weeks after, there was a trial
and an execution. Black Norris vvast e
criminal'. Among the spectators at t*e
iatier, were a young man and a young
woman. As soon as the body swung in
the air; u shrill peal of laughter arose
from one of ilie crowd. It was from tire
female who, the next mom-nt lay, fain
ting in the arms of her companion.
Kate was conveyed home. Siie was re
sto r ed to consciousness, hut her mind, so
highly excited before, seemed now to have
sunk into a s ate of infantine imbecility..
I Thus siie remained fur several days, n tv
weeks. A gloom seemed to have over
spread her lover’s mind, which threaten
ed consequences similar to those under
which the being whom he so tenderly lov
ed hud labour, d. He avoided society—
lie would hardly exchange a word even
with ids mother. Hu was continually
wan ieriug about the cliff and the shore-,
alone.
One day, when ho had thrown himself
upon the very spot, where, a-5 wo related
in the beginning, he had intruded upon j
i tiie slumbers of the maniac—revolving j
' the cause which now utterly absorbed bis!
mind and staff and lost to-external con
sciousness—he wasstartleu by something
: falling upon Ids face. He looked up, and
saw the loved one hanging over him. —
Tiie tear-drop stood trembling upon his
! bed—the light of season beamed from
> her eye. She pronounced Ids name, talk*
* ed to him of her fathei’s death, informed
1 hun that she believed his murderer had
suff-red the penalty of ids crime, hut
' knew not vvaen, o; by what means. He
: drew her sos iy toward h.m—encourag.
1 ing her to speak on—questioned her,
I found that oi all that had passed since her
1 wits had gone astray, the only circum
-1 stance which had leh an impression upon
her memory, wastin' fete of Black Noi ris.
1 He now endeavoured to ascertain the
: slrte of her heart with tespect to Idm.
An eye, at once cast down—u burning
i cheek—lips that made s landless motion,
confirmed the u.atvsi hopes and crowned
the most ardent wishes of Ids soul.—
Reason was perfectly re nslaled—love
had never lost its seat. He urged the
■ suit confession—and he. face was buried
r in his bosom. In a week site was his
wife, and along with h"n mother, accom
■ danied him to a distant part of the coun
try, lest, old and painful recollections
' might he recalled by the presence u: scenes
