The Store Keepers also held a meeting on

not publicly express our contempt for, and de

Meetings of u similar nature have also been
held in Richmond and Norfolk —at ti e former
place a committee was appointed and were to
make their report on 4ii• inst.

VThe Savannah Georgian ol the 4ih hist. says.
“ We have recently conversed with several «!
the planters and inning.ms ri our vicinity, who
nil agreed in saying that the crops w fc never
more promising at any lonner season than they
are this season. Wo are airaid tli it the heavy
rain on Sunday may have done some damage to
the cotton.”
The St. Francisvdle (La.) Journal of July the
23d, says—The corn crops are made, an 1 we
suppose were never more abundant. The crops
el cotton are not so promising. The growth ol
the plant, is unusually large, but the continued
rains have produced long joints, and the crop is
not so well boiled as it would have been with
less rain.’*
Commerce an;! Miitiui'actum,
The progress of Commerce and Manufac
lures in Great B.ituin within the last two years
has been amazing. The Glasgow Chronicle
contains the following:
IMPORTS. EXPORTS.
Real value of British
Official Value. Irodii-p.
1832 £l3 237.000 £33.040.000
1834 47.908.000 4l.28»i.0OO
Increase 4.071,000 5,240.000
This increase appears the more remarkable
when we take into accouru the great fall in the
value of farm produce. Tiie principal item is
cotlm.
Offimal value of Cot- Real value of Cotton man
ton imported ufact'ires exported.
1832 £9.170,000 £17,35 ..000
1834 10,800,000 20,500,000
Increase 1,440.000 3,150,000
The official value, being calculated at prices
fixed in the reign of King William, is of no oth
er use bat to denote quantity. According to the
actual prices, the increase of the value of the
import in 1834 would be about 15,000 000. Great
as the effects of such an increase of value live
been in Great Britain, they must have been still
more remarkable in America. Tiie cotton rai>.
ed last year in the United States exceeded
1,000,000 of bags, averaging 360 lbs, each,
’ftie prices from the end of 1834 to the end of
1835, rose about 3d. per lb. or 50 per cent. Bv
this rise, therefore the American planters will
have gained an extra profit of 14,400,000.
The Charleston Boatd of Health report the i
deaths of fifteen persons in that city, during the
week ending Ist instant—l 0 whiles and 5 black*.
