• O matter and impertmency mix'd !
Henson in madness I”—Shakspeare.
During the height cf the disturbances
in Ire I and 1798, our neighborhood re
mained almost tree from these srreues ol
violence by which the face of the isUuuJ
was disfigured in other places. On one
occasion, however, and, as it happened, a
joyous one, the glimmer of the bayonet
was seen among its peaceful groves.
A handsome whitewashed cottage, re
tiring a little Irom the common road, was
tenanted by a family of the name of lie
nisson. A workshop close adjoining, to
gether with a number of new and old
ploughs, shade-trees, spars of unhewn
timber, and heaps o! shavings strewd a
bout the yard, indicated the culling of the
possessor, who is still the greatest car
penter in the neighborhood of the village.
His son Edmond, a handsome lad, had
been for several months contracted to the
daughter ol a comfor'ahle ‘dealing man.
in Ihe street, and thu family were so much,
liked, that the whole village took an in
ierest in the union, il happiness ho the
end of w isdom, philosophers had no ad
vantage over these village trades people.
With enough to screen them from tne
asperities of life, without attaching them
to a world which they were riot created
to love, their days flowed cheerily along,
undisturbed by 'ambition, and undid ad l>y
fen r.
One circumstance alone had occurred,
for many ve.ArS to cast a gloom over the
domestic pleasures ot the tranquil circle.
Edwin Ri nisson had a twin brother mini
ed Lem is. so exact 1 v rosemhl.ng him in
countenance and figure, (hat they might
be called the Dmmios of the place. Both
were handsome, bo h graceful, and equal
ly vers. d in all the accomphshmertta o!
their rank; both well ins.;ne ed in the
customary walks of rustic education,"mu
both a lached to each other with a fond
ness even exceeding the natural love ol
brothers. If one were corrected, the
other wept with him; it one were sick, the
other watched unceasingly by his bed; i!
one were ahsen’, the other looked but hail
ahve; in every 1 h lll _i thei r joys and t roubles
were divided by tire lines, sympa by, nor
did friendship look less lovely in tiic.se
humble youngarii/.ans, than in sjn’riis tii
most divinely wrought, and filled with all
the wealth oi intellectual knowledge.
Their characters, however, even from
their early years, beg n to take a dil
ferenl coarse. Edmond, the first-born
of the two, was distinguished by t!ie com
mon bovish giddiness and lor"a uness ol
spirit, although manifesting rather
“The minis oi liberty,
Tiie ll isii ami oui-breiik of a fiery mind, ’
than jiositive vice, and was the greater
favorite among l!ie young and gay. —
Lewis, on ihe contrary, was thoughtful
and gentle, and given to jiie'y, for \\ lii«T»
he inclined no intle share of the jests and
mirth of his more volalie companions.
While Edmond sported the hours away
at the dance or the hail-alley, his brother
would remain in the chamber ol some va
lelud narian relative, reading :tsolid book,
or talking on some practical subjects. It
thus happened that both had heir admir
ers, and equally numerous: the elder
winning the suffrages ot those who
were only intent on the enjoyment of life,
the younger gaining the love ami the es
teem of those whom time had made iarm-
Uar with its infirmities.
How often do we seen the scourage of
affliction jiass harmless over the heads of
those who are only busy on their own
selfish affections and enjoyments, while
it will fall heavily on others whose days
are devoted to the interests of their fellow
men ! Religion has explained to ns the
.mvstery, and yet we sigh when the in
stance Is presented to our view. It hap
pened one day that Lewis slept in a field
behind their house during several hours,
with the noontide fervour of a July" sun
beating full on his unshaded figure. His
brother, returning Irom a neighboring
fair, found him lying on the grass, and
| woke him up, when he complained oi
headuch, and returned to the house un
well. The medical man, yvhose as is
tance was procured by a hall-guinea fee,
pronounced it a coup tie solid, or sun
stroke, and the disorder ran its usual
course. Lewis recovered, and seemed
ibrabouta month the same as ever.
One day, old Renisson, raising his eyes
as he was at work, encountered those ot
his younger son, which were fixed upon
him* with a singular expression, in seme
time afterward, happening to look up a
ain, he was surprised at the same ap
pearance, and said, returning the stare
with interest:
“Is it anv thing that would be ailin’
you, Lewy ?” .
pjo answer.
“What ails you, I tell you? What
kes you be lookin’ at me that way V*
05 still Lewy made no reply, but continu.
fed the same sir 'S ular ? 6ze '
mm i iwmum mi > n I riniin*****™* 11
‘ You’re a dhroll boy, so you are,’ said
the carpenter, resuming his work, and ta
king no farther notice t£F"the circum
stance. At dinner, however, and atsup
-1 per the same thing occurred, until at
I length it wasso often repeated during so
i vend days, that the old man began to
1 lose patience.
i “ Don’t bo lookin’ at me that wav, I j
Jell you,” he said : -‘do you hear me a-|
I gain ? For what do you be lookin’ at j
1 me?” |
i Lewy, however, still appeared to take (
1 no notice of these admonitions, until at
I length, after the rough manner of cotta
geis, his father InH a ecourse to the cane
in order to compel him to desist. Soon
iifier, other peculiarities began to appear
io the conduct of the youth, which indica
ted some fist approaching menial nun.
At meals, the presence ot a s' ranger would
prevent his eating. His mother about
this time, fell ill, and, in a short time died.
Lewis, during tne course of her death
sickness, showed a surprising absence of
muni, a d the only sign by which the fa
mily could perceive that he was anywise
conscious of their affliction, occurred on
the rnoniiii!j of tire poor woman’s demise,
w hen, on hearing k announced, he broke
out into fits es furous madness, which
ended in tranquil but confirmed idiotcy.
Enough remained, however, to show
that the disease: to whose assaults the
reason yielded, had not trespassed on the
province of affection. Unable to work
ur read, his chief occupation was that of
nursing an infant sister, whom he guard
ed with more than maternal assiduity. It
was a cruel amusement to some ol his
companions io observe the rage with
which ‘ Cracked Lewy ’ would shake his,
fist and stamp when the slightest insuitor
annoyance was offered to the baby.
“ Lewy can’t go. Lewy must mind ihe j
child,” was his constant excuse when any
of ins family sought to draw him from
tiie house, in order to engage his atten
tion with such cheerful scenes and sports
as seemed to them best calculated to re
store a healthier tone of thought.
This affection, aided by the gtS inct of
natural love and heightened by pity, en
deared the poor idiot more than ever to
iiis relatives ; and, as is generally the
case in Ireland, a slight offered bv a stran
ger in this qua iter, was much more keen
ly felt by anv of In's family than when
directed agams' themselves.
Bui there is one event related in the
village, which still more strikingly matvi
fes's the power of the heart, even when
the reason is no longer capable of aiding
it in the choice of good and evil. One |
morning, on arising from Ii s bed, Edmond
Renisson went as usual to inspect their
1 ii tie field, irom w h ci, with consternation,
lie missed their only cow. Acquainting
hisfainilv wi h their mischance,he started
immediately in pursuit, carrying wi ll him
a fa von e dog, winch unfortunately had
been ti. d up .it the time when the robbery
was committed. He did not return till
late on the following evening, and, when
he did, he brought tho cow. lie enter
tained :he family a good deal by his uc
coiini of the manv adventures winch had
distinguished ins brief exp< dition. lire
night, In* s tid, he had passed in Iho moun
tains, whom he saw and narrowly' esca
ped some pa i ties <if the rebels, anu Ins cow
lie had found quietly grazing . hat morning
in a .gentleman’s |>ark, on His ap-il. ing for
his property, the gentleman who happen
ed to he with Ins men, and was a good na
tured, cheerful man, informed Edmond
that he had purchased her that v ay morn
ing at ti t.nr, and showed a natural degree
of leluctance to lose Ins bargain. At
Roimison’s desire, however, lie sent the
cow to the village by a herdsman, in or
der to ascertain the truth of the young
man’s s ory. Tins was easily made to
appear on their arrival in the village,
and afer partaking of some refreshment
with the tamilv, the herdsman lelt the
cow and took his leave.
Soon after this transaction, the wedding
of Edmond, the joyous event already spo
ken of, was fixed for a certain day. The
landlord of their little holding, who had
, always taken the kindest interest in their
affairs, insisted on having tiie marriage
take place at his own hsuse, where he
was to give a feast to almost all the inha
bitants of 'he village in honor of the occa
f sion. At an early hour, a group of young
f men and women assembled before the re
, sidence of the bride, the former decorated
, with tibands and handkerchiefs of the
5 gayest colors, the latter dressed in white,
. and bearing baskets of flowers, which
. they scattered on the nuptial path. Mo
ving to the sound of mirthful music, the
gay procession took the way leading to
j the demense of their generous patron, lea
ving few behind them in the village.
! Life seldom offers us a scene of joy
s which contains not an ingredient of its
t opposite, or a spectacle ot virtue without
| some qualifying Stroke of evil to remind
f; us of our frailty. Among the youths
. ! who mingled most frequently in those
i sports, where Edmund Rcnnisson was
, j commonly triumphant, there was one,
. named Guare* a spiteful and malicious
1 lad, who had been from his very child
j hood remarkable for hts envious and
quarrelsome disposition, tor his idle,
; drunken habits, and for many other evil
,f qualities. To Edmund Renissnon, he
i had long conceived u peculiar hatred,
e as well occasioned by the sujierior dexter
itv of the latter at their rustic exercises,
as bv a natural malignity of heart. This
detestable feeling was carried to its height
on Edmond’s suit to Mary Fizgerald,
» w ho had rejected Guare more than once
without hesitation. For many weeks
after the marriage had been arranged,
t he absented himself from the customary
meetings of the villagers, and brooded
in secret over the boiling venom of his
Veart. inflamed by hate ard disappoint-
ii i imu ' M nan nt m .........
men'. Fin* mortification to his own
pride, and the sight of happiness in a
quarter where his hale was fixed, were
the stings that pierced the bosom of this
worthless being. The merrv sounds of
preparation lor the coming fete were dis
cord to his jealous ear, and he sauntered
j at evening through the pleasant village,
i like a fiend astray among the innocent.
On the evening previous to that ap
! pointed for the marriage, as he loitered
1 along the road in the neighborhood of
I the highway, the following notice jiosied
against an elm-lrce near the cross-road
attracted Ids attention :
‘ Wubkkas, on the night of the fifth
instant, between the hours of twelve and
one o’clock, a number of men having
their faces blacked, and provided with
fire-arms and other weapons, did bur
glariously enter the dwelling-house of
Thomas Hanlon, of the Commons; near
and murder the said Hanlon, lie being at
that time in the employ of his majesty’s
government as a constable of .
“A kkwahd of one hundred pounds is
hereby offered and will be given to any
person or persons who shall give such
information, private or otherwise, as
may lead to the detection of the person
or any of the persons concerned .n tiie
said murder.”
A horrible design suggested itself, to
the mind of Guare the instant he per ;sed
these words. He remembered that the
night specified was the very one which
Edmond Rennisson had spent in the moun
tains in pursuit of his cow. No sooner
had it fully presented itself to his mind,
than it was embraced and put in execu
tion. A wretch more ready and not
less destitute of priucijile than iiirnseil
was made tiie confidant of his detestable
j scheme, and readily consented to take
a snare in iis guilt mid its a J vanities.
On the morning of the bridal, as Lew
is, who had been left at home to.take care.
I of the house, was playing with the infant
in the shunstiine, ho was startled by ob
serving the glitter of gun-barrels and tin
blaze of the dreaded scarlet tunong the
boughs of file clmrow which rules a por
lion of the street. They halted before
the door of Rennsion’s house, and a cor
poral, who commanded the party, advanc
ed to Lewis, and contemplated Ins figure
with much attention. We have already
spoken of the singular res •mbl.uice that
existed between tiie brother twins. The
corporal, afifT 'referring to a ji.ajier in his
hand and seeming to compare the idol’s
ajipearance with its contents, addressed
him idurrly.
“'Four name is Rennisson, friend?”
“Aih, a yell?”
“Gome, come, your name is Rennisson,
Edmond Renisson, is it not? What do
you stare at? Have 1 got three hua.-S
upon me ?”
“A ih?”
“Aih ! Aih! is that till you have got
to say. Come along, i ’il bring uu Where
you shall fie tought to cry aih, ;tVu.l ah,
and oh, too, before we have done with
oil.”
“Lewy can’t go. Lewy must mind
the child.”
“Gome, come, you know that will ne
ver do with me. Foss that hr,at sonic ol
ve into the cradle, and shut the door. Ay,
shake your fist and grin. We’re up to
alTlhat sort o’ihing, you know. Gome
along, my tulij). Handcuff that fellow,
and bring him away.”
Overjiowered by numbers, the afflicted
idot was conducted from the village,
lage, and conveyed in the direction of the
high-road. After travelling several miles
through a flat and boggy country, they
arrived in a half-burnt and miserable
looking hamlet, which was crowded with
soldieis and country people, and clamo
rous as a rookery. It had the rn sfor.Une
to constitute, at the time, one of those
dreadful military courts, at which a sem
blance ofjustice was used, as if lo heigh
ten the horrors of the certain cruelty
which follower its judgments. luonedi
rcction the sight oflhs loaded gibbet; in
another the -shrieks or groans sir rising
from the horrible triangle, ur still more
pitiful, the sound of the rending hash
upon the naked back of ihe silent suffer
er; these, and the view of the unburied
corpse on the road side, gave leai iul evi
dence of the presence<if civil discord in
the land. Whether it was that the
strangeness of the situation had produced
a strong effect upon the glimmering of
reason left him arid lighted it up for a time
into a more than ordinary brightness, it
is certain that Lewis, ".hen hi ought be
fore the court, had more the appearance
of a rational man thart when the soldiers
found him with the infant before the door
jof his paternal dwelling. By the order
i Qpexamination which \v f as instituted, aid
I the questions which were put, he was-a:
’ | ble to understand, that they mistook him
I j for his brother Edmond; nor did he unde
j caive them. They had received secret
information of his being one of a party
; who had been grllty of a nocturnal cut
ra"e at some distance from his place of
j residence. The witness who had been
i suborned by Guare, and whose slight ae
j quaintance with the brothers readily led
him into real error, deposed as well td
J the indentity as to the guilt of Lewis.
The idiot, though he understood the mis
take, did not seek to undeceive them. He
1 was 'sen enced to be flogged to death at
the triangle. Btill silent, he suffered
s himself to" be led away toward the spot
• where this dreacltui sentence was to be
pul in execution.
3 In the meantime all was mirth and life
s at Edmond’s wedding, .tables for the
, feast were laid upon the green before
jr thoir patron’s door, and violin and bag-
I pipe gave animation to the banquet,
s The priest had now arrived, and all was
, ready for the ruptial ceremony. Stand-
i ■ ingon the green, amid a circle of voting
i friends, the bride-groom, in his gay attire,
i awaited the arrival of the messenger, who
! was to summon him to the house. At
’■ this instant a peasant was seen running
with all Ids speed from the entrance of
the demesne. On seeing Edmond, he
hurried toward him, exe'aming,
“Oh, Mis'er Rennisson! Lewy!”
“What of him ?” s fid Edmond, start
led bv t ie apprehension of some stiuden
accident.
“Carried off by the sogers! heighst a
way for a rebel before my face! Sure I
seen the corporal makin’up to him an’ax
in’ him was it Edmond Rennisson he had
ttTere? and when lie mnde’em no answer
they heighat him away with them, to the
court.”
Without waitingto hear more, Edmond
rushed from the scene of mirth, and, fol
lowed by the peasant, pursued a short
cut across tne fields which led to Ii is own
house. Lewis was not there. . the
appearance of the child forsaken by its
tender guardian sufficiently' manifested
the truth oft he peasent’s tale. Judging
from the direction which thw military had
taken, in what place he should be likely
to find him, Edmond instantly left the vil
lage and hastened with his utmost speed
in the direction of the hamlet in which
the court martial held its .sittings.
The poor idiot, in the meantime, was
competed to the dreaefn! triangle, where
he sffffered the men in silt nee to lay bare
his shoulders ; while the drummer, with
many Jests prepared his instrument of
tortu re.
“A fine clear skin it is, and fit fora
gentleman’s hand writing. Come, lad, let’s
see a little more o’ the pardhment. I’ll
set you a copy of strokes, though I dare
say you’d |)refer running-hand at the
present moment. Tie up his hand. Ne
ver fear, lad, ‘twill be all one at supper.”
At this instant a cry of “Stop ! stop !”
was heard at a distance. Lewy, who
knew his brothers voice, turned jiaie as
a corpse. In a moment Edmond was
amid the group.
“Let him go?” he exclaimed, ns soon
as Ire could muster breath —“you have
taken the wrong man ; I am Edmond
Rennison.”
The exact resemblance between both
the brothers, observable even in circum.
' stances so different, struck all the behold
ers with astonishment. 'Fho execution
of the SunlcnCH ware « JO|>on.lml,' while [He
brothers were recondnctcd to :he court,
and ihe mistake explained, 'i he witness,
on whose testimony sentence had been
passed on Lewis, was re-produced, and
seemed confounded at the s-gin of Ed
mond ; he persisted however, in his for.
trier .evidence, and ihe judges readily ad
mitted that the mistake as to iden ity was
not material, provided the facts sworn
against the idiot could still he proved
against his brother. Edmond being call,
ed upon for Ins defence, accounted clear
ly foi bis absence from home outlie night
in qnes inn, and referred for a corrobora
lion of his statement to ihe gentlemen m
whose possession he had fouVid the cow.
it is nut necessary to enter into detail of
the manner in which the innocence of
the accused was made to appear, and die
I reacherous conspi racy brought home to
ihe accusers. Evert in these disastrous
fines, the love ofjusri.ee, not wholly' ox
tiii'iuish.-d, exerted its influence, and the
Rennison’s were immediately liberate!
while die perjured Guare and Ids associ
ate were transmittedtothe courtly prison,
toawuit the conseqnenccoftlieir jie.rfidity.
On arriving in tiie vil age, Edmond, who
could obtain from Lewis no explanation
of his ex! raordinary siiencc, wished that
he should accompany him to the bridal
feast in o-dor to sa'isi’y Ids finely that no
harm had happened to him. But this
the affectionate idio: resolutely declined,
giving the same answer, and in the same
I tone as he had to the corpdral :
“Lewy can’t go—Lewy must mind the
child ! ’
