CULTIVATION OF THE RUTA BAGA.
3/r. Editor .—As 1 have been in the
habit of cultivating the liuta Baga fur
several years past, formerly wflli but
poor success, but latterly unusually good,
ami believing it to bo one of the mo-t
v luablo crops that the grower of wool
ortho keeper of cattle can cultivate, I
bog the liberty of coumiunicat.ng to the
public, through your paper, the result of ;
inv experhnen s. '
I formerly have been m the practice ot ■
sowing my see l in the h ter part <>f June,
ami of having the plants to grow too I
thick on the groan 1 ; in consequeoeo ot ,
winch, I seMo.n obtained at the rate »>f ,
five hundred bushels per acre ; the roots i
being but small, and the lops quite too
Mv late practice has been to sow my
seed' in some of the last days of May, 1
with Robbia’s patent planting machine ; |
rows as near twenty eight inches be- j
tween as jvwsible, planting the seed once j
in three or four incites ; taking care, a!- j
ter the plan a get sufficiently large, to
thin them so that they may stand twelve
or fourteen inches apart. In this mode
of planting 1 have obtained from one.
half acre of land 700 bushels of roots,
the ground being a turf, turned under a
few days previous to sowing the seed ;
soil, sandy loam; sowed on the Ruta Ba.
ga, soon after the seed came up, one
bushel of plaster, broadcast.
The last season, i raised from four a
eres of land four thousand bushels of
Ruta Bagas, the account of which a’.ands
as follows :
Dr.
To use of ground, Sl6 00
•* 4 days* ploughing and harrow
ing 8 00
« 40 loads barn manure, 20 00
11 4 bushels plaster, 2 00
" seed, 2 00
** 1 day’s labor, planting, *5
“32 do. hoeing and thinning, 24 00
u 20 do. pulling and gathering, 15 00
887 75
Cr.
By 4000 bushels ruta ba. |
gas, 8400
“ 4 acres of tops, 24
6424 00
87 75
Nett profit, 8336 25
P In the foregoing estimate, I have call
« 4 the roots worth ten cents per bushel,
a price I consider them worth to fatten
cattle and sheep, and the to|>s six dollars
per acre; a price below what I should
feel willing to take for them. My cua
tom has been, for some seasons past, to
take my lambs from my ewes, some time
in the month of September, and put them
into my Ruta Baga field to wean. The
lambs trim the tops from the roots, which
causes them to thrive as fast or faster
than while taking the milk from the ewes,
And prepares them for the winter bettor
by far than any other feed that 1 have
been in the habit of trying; and they
■eat the tops from the roots so clean, that
it supersedes the necessity of cutting with
an edged tool.
When the tops are sufficiently eaten
off, the roots should he pulled out of the
ground and permitted to lie in the sun un
til the dirt is sufficiently dry to rutile oT
by handling. No dirt should ho permit,
tod to go with the roots, if it can be avoid
od, for the dirt fills up the crevices and
prevents the circulation of air, and causes
the roots to heat and spoil. Two or three
thousand bushels of roots may be thrown
into a Collar together, if dry and clear
from dirt, and preserved well ; while one
hundred bushels thrown in, in a moist
atate, together with dirt sufficient to pro
▼ant the circulation of air, will heat and
spoil in a short lime.
In raising seed, care shoul I bo taken
that no cabbage, round turnip, or any
root partaking its nature, should be per
mitted to blossom with or near the Ruta
Baga, lest the different plants should a
malgamate, and injure the seed.

DYSPEPSIA
AND
liver complaints,
■ PERSONS afflicted with these fashionable,
JL and heretofore considered almost incurs*
ble diseases, are under lasting obligations to the
scientific skill and research of Dr. J. P. Peters,
who, for several years, has devoted his entire
alien ion to the treatment of chronic or inveter
ate diseases, in different climates, has succeed
ed, by chymical analysis and synthesis, in form,
ing a combination of several proximate vegetable
principles, to which he has given the name Me
dicinae Stomachic® et Heponrte; which has
stood the test of experience and proved far more
efficient than any remedy heretofore discovered, '
in curing those distressing diseases of the mind
and body, which are generally comprehended
under the sweeping term*. Dyspepsia and Li
ter Complaints. It is likew »« a most certain
cure in enl .rgement of the Spleen.
Among the symptoms ol Dyspepsia and Liver
’ Complamts, are flatulency, sourness or burwvg
i in the stomach, melancholy, irrmbility. dis gree
able laste in the mouth, great irregularity of the
appetite, which is sometimes voracious, and a
other times greatly deficient; thirsts, fetid hreaikf
nausea, weakness of the stomach, acid trie I*
I tiona. palpitation, drowsiness, irregularity **f the
, bowels, pressure on the stomach after meals,
pain in the head, dizziness or vert.go; confusion
of mind, attended with loss of memory, a gnaw,
mg in the stomach, when empty, chilliness, af
fection of sight and hearing, pain and weakness
in the back, languor, disturbed sleep, cold feet
t and hands, tremor, uneasiness in the throat,
cough, pain in the side or breast. &c.
i The above maladies lead to organic affections
. of die stomach, liver, and heart, terminating in
Dropsy, Consumption, Apoplexy, Sic. according
to the climate, habits, age, sex, and tempera*
memos the patient.
The above Medicines consist of three differ
ent prepauifions, two of wnich are taken inter,
naliy, the other applied externally, over the
diseased parts
They are not unpleasant to use, and their
qualities will remain unchanged for years, in
1 any climate. Persons journeying, can use them
as advantageously, as at (heir own homes.—
Women in the most delicate situation, can use
them without incurring any risk.
The Pills are slightly aperient or laxative,
and they possess tonic and deobstruent qualities
in an eminent degree, thus strengthening the pa
tient, while they remove obstructions in partied,
lar organs. The Embrocation is calculated to
relieve the tenderness and preternatural contrac
tion of the abdominal muscles, to increase and
equalize the cutaneous transpiration of the parts
to which it is applied, at the same time acting
in conjunction with the othermedicines, in mu*
ing (be torpid functions of 'he chylopoieiic vjsce
a, or organs of digestion.
i’lio tincture acts upon the secernent function
increasing perspiration, and equalizing the cir
eolation ol ibe general mass ol fluids.
These .Medicines have been found «n fflVcni
«1, in removing tho complaint* for which they
ire recommended, that physicians frequently
have recourse to them for their patients, alter
having exhuu-ied all their skill, to little or no
purpose.
The above medicines are [tut up in parcels,
each parcel being included in u hex, with lull
directions lor use. A box will lasi from fifteen
to twenty days. From one lo three boxes will
lie necessary to complete a cure.
