Remark*—There \im been considerable rain du
ring the week past, and the weather has turned off
cold at last Business lias not been very brisk since
our last report, though prices in the Grocery and Pro
% ision market have been fully maintained. In some
instances the rates have advanced considerably, par
ticularly in articles of Westcrn Produce.
Colton. —Our market in Cottons remained in the
dead and depressed condition described in our Inst
for at least four days. Now and then a sale was ef
fected in that time, but it was to persons having car
goes to complete, and afforded no criterion of the state
of the market. Yerterday and the day before, how
ever, there were transactions to some extent, and we
now consider the market us having again resumed
operations. There has been a decline in price of f a
lc. per pound on the transactions reported as having
taken place in the early part of last week. There has
been a still later arrival from Liverpool, bringing ac
counts of the condition of the Colton market tlmreijp
to the 18lh Dec. Prices ruled then about as they did
on the 7th Dec. There had been a small advance
after the great depression on the sth fith and 7llf,
but the improvement was ngam lost on lh° 16th, 17th
and 13th. We cannot by any ra *ans report our mar
ket as being in a settled state, at this lime. We have
'ventured to resume quotations, but there is little en
quiry for any thing helow Pair quality. Good and
fine request. Sales have chiefly at

rSpIHE public ts informed, that the Books for
JL a Bank in the Town es Hamburg, S. C.
will be opened at different places, on Monday
next. I deem it proper to make the following
staterrleni on the subject ; -
THIS Bank is the production of a child of my
own creational was at my solicitation that this
Charter was granted—my reputation stands
pledged to the Governor, as well as to the Le
gislature, for its true performance. That pledge
shall be rigidly observed and redeemed. The
stock of (his Bank was intended by the Legisla
ture to be taken by the non speculating commu
nity—a community which desires hs money to
be invested in such Property, and will be satisfi
ed with a moderate revenue annually, and no
stock jobbing to be allowed whatsoever. It will
be seen that the whoie capital id to lie paid in
, specie-—the only specie Bank in the whole coun
try to my knowledge. It is not vanity When I
say it will prove, like the Bridge over the Savan
nah, the Wharf at Augusta, and the Town of
Hamburg, an honor to the Builder and a profit to
the owners. Nothing but the Golden Eagle
and the Silver Dollar trill be taken in payment
for its stock. Honer and responsibility requites
mo to fake charge of the organization o( the In.
•titution, until nil mailers are placed on such a
basis as to secure its undoubted success; when it
will be confided to some one whose honesty and
responsibility will ensure ns duration to the end
of its Charter. This course of my proceeding
harms hb man. Whoever may d ffer with me
m opinion, keeps his money, and others take the
Stock.
I will take no Bank certificates unless express
ly made payable in American Com, Spanish or
Mexican Dollars, for I will not receive any for
eign Cold or Pistareens. I will have such mo
ney for tiie Smck, as the Public will taka from
us tor bur Bills.
