. the immense mass of people below. In a vei
s abort time the windows of the building, a :d eve)
i thing in the office, were completely demoliahei
and strewed about the streets. The pnntin
! press was broken to pieces, and the largest piec
dragged through several of the principal street
and then thrown into (he river. Thus far, eve>
thing was done in the most systematic ordei
and. as is believed, was tacitly countenanced b
a very large number of our most respcctab!
citizens. At this juncture, however, the name
ofßimey, Donaldson, Colby, &c. (all leadin
abolitionists,} were shouted by numerous voice*
, and immediately three or four hundred of th
mob rushed to Birney’s dwelling. The mol
were well provided with tar and feathers. Oi
arriving at Birney’s house, the abolition edilo
was demanded; his son. a youth of about sixteen
r came to the door, and assured the multitudi
that his falher was not at home. It was seoi
satisfactorily ascertained that he had left the
city in the stage lor Hillsborough several houn
previously. 'I he mob then dnected their coars*
to the house of one of the Donaldsons, (the oihei
residing m the country.) and demanded him to
I be delivered up to them. Some ladies came t«
the door, and pledged their word that Donaldson
was not at home, and assured the multitude tliai
no one but ladies were in the house. The mob
immediately departed in search of, but did not
succeed in finding him. It was afterwards as.
t - ceriained that he had fled from the house a few
minutes betore the arrival of the mob, and had
escaped through an alley or retired street to
some unknown pi ice.
The cry of “ Church Alley*’ was now resoun
ded through the muh. This is a place where a
I quantity of black and 'white men and women, of
infamous 'characters, reside, huddled promiscu
ously together in five or six small buddings. In
a few minutes the inmates of these wretched
brothels were turned into the sheets, and the
windows of the buildings, and every article
which the buildings contained, destroyed and
scattered to the four winds of Heaven.
Here, by the peaceable interference of seve
i Tal citizens, the progress of the rtidb was arrest
ers, (as was supposed, finally,) every body, np.
patently, promising to disperse and go home.
An hotrr otr two afterwards, two or three httn.
Ij ’dred again collected together au i demolished the
Windows arid sH the furniture of six or seven
small negro houses of bad character, on and
near the corner of Columbia and Him streets, in
the part of the town commonly called the swamp.
In the course of this attack a gun was’fired from
a window ofone of the houses, and a young rttun
by the name of Kinsey Was se-erely shot in the
hip and leg with large sized pigeon shot. The
wound, we believe, is not considered very dan.
gerous. though he was perforated with twenty
odd shot.
The mob having accomplished all they intend
ed, finally dispersed about three o’clock on Sun.
day morning.
Thus have the abolitionists brought upon our
hitherto peaceful city a highly disreputable mob,
whiih every good ci ize'ft and s'ftpporlet of the
laws cannot but lament and condemn. These
continued scenes of violence and mobism must
*ue arrested, and the laws sustained.

Remarks. — For a few articles of Western Produce,
