sure a ready and comfortable passage from Bos
ton to New Orleans in seven days. Such is the
outline of a scheme on the eve of execution, with
that noiseless, cautious, and decided character of
our population.
The author of this splendid as well as most
useful project, is Thomas Butler King, of Geor
gia, a gentleman who, by his amiable manners
and great intelligence, has made a most tnvora
blc impression upon all who have the pleasure to
know him, and if his valuable services to his
State are appreciated in Georgia, as such arc
estimated here, he deserves, and will receive its
highest honors.

Our friend Mr. Hart, has closed his Theatrical
Campaign at Columbus, and is at present in this City
oh bis way North to add lo the numbers and attrac
tion of his little Company. The Columbus Iltrahl
says his campaign there has been a brilliant one, bulb
’ «n itockel and honor —staling that he had ‘ cleared,
in eight weeks, the round sum of $3000." Pretty de
cent for Columbus, with her less than 4900 inhabi
tants ! We suppose the multitudes, that the Creek
War poured into the City, helped them out. VV hen
these burning spirits were nit allowed to go against
the enemy without guns or ought else, in spite they
went to the Theatre. Well, it is belter to laugh than
cry, at any time. —Conner of yesterday.
The New York Journal of Commerce, of the
30th ult. contains the following:
The Belle. —A letter from the agent of the
fTaderwriters, dated at Norfolk, August 25rh,
makes it certain that no ship had been ashore
except the Belle. The B. had ten feet water
jii the hold, which had destroyed 130 hhds. of
sugar. Os the other portions of the cargo,
$30,000 worth had been saved in good order,
and it was expected that most of the remainder
would also be secured. The ship would be lost.

COTTON. —During the past week the receipts of
new cotton amounted to between 150 a 200 bales,
nearly all of which has been disposed of at prices
averaging from 17 to 17i cents. The cotton received
so far of the new crop is of rather an inferior qual
ity lo that received last year, and should the balance
to come prove of no better quality, prime cottons will
be scarce, and difficult to be had. For old cottons
there U not much demand; in fact there is very little
lo be bad.
FREIGHTS. —To Savannah 371 cents per bale
for cotton; to Charleston by Rail Road Si. Our

HAVRE, July 23. — Cottons. — Since our last re
nort up to tile 20th inst. our market remained in a
precarious and drooping state. But early in the
morning lha next day, on-lhe receipt ot advices ot the
18th from Liverpool, a sudden and very spirited de
mand sprung up, tho result of which was about 3000
bales taken up partly by speculators, at an advance ol
or 3 centimes on the middling t j fair descriptions ol
the United Stales short staple Cottons, which were
. almost exclusively sought after. Yesterday, the trans
( actions were comparatively limited, the sales having
r only amounted to IM3 bales. In these transactions,
however, the advance of the day previous has been
well supjiorted; hut it now remains to be seen how
far the interior will respond to the movement which
will, most likely, depend, in a great measure, on the
i next advices from IJverpool. The sales, since our
aforesaid report, say from the 13th to the 22d instant
, inclusive,embrace 7193 bales, consisting of 5267 B.
Louisiana, at f 110 50 lo 1.170; 636 B. 31<>bile, at f. 125
' to f. 163; 872 B. Upland, at f. >26 to f. 155; 185 B. Per
nambuco, at f. 135 lo f. 173; and 213 B. Paita.at f. 110;
! the whole duly paid. The supplies received, within
the same period, have been 2732 B. Louisiana and
716 B. Bengal, together 3148 B.
[From Levy's New Orleans Price Current, Sept. 3 ]
Remarks —For the season, limre is a nlo lerale
share of business doing in many of the articles which
we receive hy way of the liver, and our receipts
from that source, in the provision line, are compara
tively light; with regard . however, to such articles
of merchandise as arrive here by sea, tiny are, with
a few solitary exceptions, in as little request as former
ly. Our mornings and evenings continue to grow
more cool, an 1 the heat of the son, though still very
[sjwerlnl at mid day, has been less oppressive during
the past than for many weeks previous. The city
continues remarkably healthy.
During the W ek, the Mississippi experienced a
swell of a few in. he., but it Ins since reced d, and
appeals stationary at 9 feet below high water-mark.
Colton. —Arrived since the 26 h ult., 217 bales, (of
ibis amount 83 bales are of the nev> crop ) Cleared
in the same lime, 1870 biles: making a reduction in
stock of 1633 bales, and leaving on hand, inclusive
of all on ship board not cleared on ifie Ist inst., a
stock of 2933 bales. Our Colton market remains in
3 rather uninteresting condition, though the arrival
and sale of a lew hales of I lie new crop lias created,
as usual, some lillle competition between those who
are anxious lo secure these early receipts for different
manufactories in the northern states. The quality of
the Colton sold is said to he about frond fair, and was
disposed of as Pillows, viz; 4 bales at 18, bat 18, 3 at
181, 11 at 18), sat 17, and 41 at 18 cents. Sales
made under such circumstances, just as the season is
about lo open, but before any thing decided has beerl
done, will not always serve ns an index of the course
of future transactions: and fbey sometimes lead to ex
pectations (li it are nit afterwards realized. Experi
ence heretofore, has shown that those who forward
their Cotton early, have generally reaped the best
prices, and our friends in the country being aware of
lb s will no d mlit consul their own interest and push
bus nes as much as po sible. For th” o d Colton on
h n I, tin r does not apnear to beany demand, though
we are not without a few sales to notice, viz: 19 bales
LonUiana and Mississippi at 131 cents, 27 bales Texas
at I6J, 400 Tennessee and North Alabaruaat 12, 153
at 121 cents.
Sugar. —The market for N.-vv Orleans Sugar pre
sents a tolerably fi -m appearance, but we are yet
without the slightest improvement lo notice in the
d’mand. Havana Sugars are rather more sought
after, and Ilc-re has been some business (Join? nt prices
within the scope of our former quotations: Whit ■ll a
141, Brown 9; a 10 cents.
Molasses. —" 7 e have heard of some small safes at
43 cents per gallon; lh«*re are, however, very few per
sons wishing lo purchase.
M A CON, S.-pt. 8. Cotton. —The Stock remain
ing on hand the past season will not exceed 30 bales.
During the summer months business has been re
markably dull. We have to notice, however, with
in a few days, tho arrival of several wagons and
boats fully laden with merchandize for th-s place,
notwithstanding the high price of freights, ($3 per
100 lbs. by wagons from Savannah, and $1 50 by
boats,) together with nine bales New Cotton—the
first of which reached ns on th” 17th ultimo, and
brought 23 cents : 1 at 18 cents—2 at 161 cents, 1 at
10) cents —and 4 .1 10) cents. The prospects oflhe
present growing crop of Cotton in this section of the
Slate, is highly promising, notwithslan ling the unit
sual heavy rains which fell in the fore part oflhe
season, which operand much against the young
Weed, but the fine we ilhcr during the months of July
and August has proved more beneficial than could
have b-en expected.
Complaints from some Counties now exist, re
specling the injury committed by insects—but this
is by no means universal, and unless an unusual
early frost should take place, a full average crop
must be realiz’d.
The season will soon open, and much depends
upon the quality of the Cotton, ns to price, as the
fi si purchases are confined principally for Northern
Manufactories which, it is believed, are but scanti
ly, supplied wiib the raw material of a prime quali
ty. As the season may begin with prices which
may not he kept up, we would recommend to Plan
ters early sales. The stock of goods throughout the
.summer months have been heavy, and the large sup
plies now on tho way will operate much in favor of
the Planter.
CHARLESTON, Sept 10.— Colton. —The mar
ket fer Uplands during the last week, has again been
at a dead stand. No vessels loading (or foreign ports,
and no demand for Northern manufacturers—s7
hales of Uplands comprise the whole transactions of
the past week, of which 4 biles at 12 reals and 53 at
15. Our quotations nomuial. Os Long Cottons, we
have tol been apprised ol any sales. VVe have cor
rected the stock of both denominations from actual
survey, and have altered our tables lo correspond.
Rice —The demand appears to continue steady,
at prices not varying Irom our 1 ist quotations. There
seems for the present, to be no prospect of a decline.
A fresh beat and good ai lice meets with a ready
sale. The stock, with the exception of what is in
the hands of our dealers for the retail trade, consists
principally in the rough slate at ihe Mills, and can
not be got at. Our tables exhibits a correct state
ment ot th ■ quantity for sale in factors’ hands It
consists principally of old beaten Rice. The sales
of the week liave amounted to about 1000 bbls.
ranging from s3s to s3l.
Flour. —Th? supply of the week past has amount
ed to 600 bbls. Virginia, of which 100 bbls. were of
the new crop, the balance of a fresh beat article.
We understand that the average sales of the l itter
were at $9). A lew sales oflhe firmer were effec
led at $lO. At such prices it cannot he expected
that purchasers would go freely in the market—;he
transactions arc confined to the wants oflhe moment.
Crain —There have been no arrivals either of
Corn, Oats , Peas or Hay. Our quotations which
we continue fiotn our last, must therefore be con
sidered ns nominal.
Groceries. —The market has been very dull as to
Muscovado's. With the exception oflhe saleofa
few bhds. for the retail trade, we have heard of no
transactions. 33 boxes of white Havana, received
during the week, sold at our highest quotations. In
Coffee, as lillle doing. 45 bags ol Cuba, a good fiir
article sold f rom store at 13i cents
Mohsscs.— About 120 bhds. Cuba, received since
our last, in two lots, brought 31 cents for 77 hhds.
and a little above for the remainder.
Spirits. —We do notnller our last rates: the trans
actions have been few, both in foreign and domestic.
A lot of New Orleans Whiskey brought 43 cents.
B icoi —Th »re htvebeen noarrivals. Wenotice
no particular enquiry, except for Middlings: they
continue to command our highest quotations.
Lard —Remains steady: a lot of 34 bbls. Western,
sold at prims not transpired.
Salt 'l’lie market is bare of Liverpool Sack.
Slocks. —Little or nothing has been doing in any
descriptions. Thesales of all kinds are limited.
Freghts.— There are no vessels up for European
ports.
