lo bo advanced. At the lime of your nomination j
it wa h perceived a difference ot’ opinion in re* (
fcrcnce to !b« currency question, obloincd
amongst you. I was known to your delegate* (
to Ik* an advocate ot* a Sub-Tfcaaury plan, and (
opposed to the Bank—other* ot* tbo party t
thought differently. The difference ol‘ opinion ,
was considered by no means vital lu the question (
of Stale Itights, and under this decision the ,
nomination look place.
The result of your nomination proved that I
was not alone in supporting a Hub*Treasury, or
a separation of the (government and Banks.
Nor di<l you then hold that we, hy this opinion,
eomproinillcd Stale Rights. Under this deci
sion it was determined lha», a* a party, we
would exercise a spirit of toleration, prescribe
tor this, nor make tins sentiment a lest of fi
delity. We mutually agreed to use our efforts to
allay excitement on this ground.
Governed hy this rule, as also hy a paramount
interest we fell in the principles of the parly, {
with one or two exceptions, within our know,
ledge, wo of the Sub-Treasury have remained
quiet, and endeavored I » keep others so. ‘
On the oilier hand, from the journals whoa c j
your leading organs, we have received a weekly j .
caaligalion for opinion’ll sake, which has only 1
I tec n augmented hy our silent forbearance.—
This could have been borne still, if the F liters j
could have endured our premice, and permitted
us with our lioncat convictions to occupy a m at
around the family circle. During all this time
no effort on our part wa i made publicly to de.
fond our opinions thus weekly assailed for fear
of stirring disncnsion. 'Dio result is, broad in
sertion, ridicule and sarcasm have brought to
their ai I unmeasured denunciation, and a viru
lent proscription of* all those, who with myself
maintain that the money of the conntiy ought
no longer to bo kept by the Bmks, who arc una
ble to pay i\ out when wanted ; of all who think
it lessens the chances of corruption, to make
the Government keep its own funds, and who
think a Suh-Tn aimry a necessary resort to save
UN from a U. H. Bank.
In this, wo are denounced ns ft if ml* of the
Adminielralion , Van It men Men, and apovlulr*
from ynur creed. For tins we are coupled with
office seekers, who lorn mid change a* a matter
of convenience. To prove this, f invite atten
tion to the following extract from the Georgia
Messenger, of Jnuu iiH.
“ Hut whatever may ho the issue of Ibis much
talked of measure, and the means hy which that
issue maybe brought about, wo arc determined
in our minds llial Ibis Hub-Treasury question i.i
hereafter to bo regarded as a text i/unitimi. The
friends and opponents id* the Adonnstralion are
to ho Judged by it. It is the Shibboleth of the
Van Huron parly.
“ At first, wo were disposed to think dial it
probably might ho regarded ns an abstract hide,
pendent question, on which, even the opponents
of Mr. Van Huron might concur without emu
milling their general principles. Hut wo now
think so no longer. For ourselves at. least, ami
wo know we speak the sentiments of very many
others, wo are bound to believe that all Snb-Trea
sury men arc Van Huron men, unlens there is
an exptsss disclaimer to the contrary.”
My intelauurso at Macon, recently, with some
who I suppose are embraced in the phrase "very
winy” has indicated mu as the candidate first
to ho h iard from. In my intercourse at Macon,
I was wholly passive, and only unswornl

a iVnlhlW.
/f tho system of proscription moved by the
editorial referred to, has any effect, (and 1 doubt
not it will,) it must be to destroy your party, and
whether designed or not, will lend, out of its
ruin.ul and sea tic rod fragments, united to a per.
lion of the Union Parly, to build up a Hank i
Tarty in Georgia. Until a plain indication of
such a purpose, I will not presume one to r\.

As far as the banks of this town are concern
