Extract from a letter of the Harrisburg corres-!
pondence of the United States Gazette, dated ;
March 13.
“The Committee of Conference in relation to the
Resumption Bill have not made a report yet. They
had leave to sit this afternoon during the session of
the House, and it is said they will be ready to report
on Monday. I doubt very much whether it is ‘the
fact. It is said they differed very widely in their
views at the outset, and owing to the secrecy which
they observe, it is difficult to say how they are getting
along.”
The late passage of the Great Western from Bris
tol to New York, in sixteen days, while so many
packet ships which sailed weeks before are still out,
is another triumph of steam power. The New York
papers contain a list of the packets which sailed
from Havre, Liverpool and London for New York,
before the Great Western left Bristol, and have not
yet arrived. It comprises four from Havre, eight
from Liverpool, and five from London. The weather
on the British and French coasts is known to have
been very severe, and several of the packets inclu
ded in the above list are reported to have put hack
to Cork and other ports.
The imports of English and French goods into N.
York are stated to be not a third of the quantity
brought in last year. It will not require any groat
length of time to relieve the United States of its in- :
debtedness to Europe if the measure of restricted i
imports is steadily adhered to.
[from our correspondent.]
WASHINGTON, March IG.
Messrs. Dickerson, Killc, Cooper and Ryall ap
peared before the Speaker’s table in the House this
morning, and were about to be sworn in, when Mr.
Jenifer, ol Maryland, one of the great laborers of
the Whig patty, made an attempt, decidedly out of
order, to introduce a resolution, having for its object
a further delay of one month before the members
should be sworn in. The Speaker on this occasion,
with much good sense, would not permit the Mary
lander to have his own way, notwithstanding two or
three disorderly manoeuvres from the opposition,
and proceeded to qualify the gentlemen who presett
ed themselves. Mr. Vroom, the other candidate,
was not present, but is expected to-morrow.
A little explanation relative to the China trade, oc
curred between Messrs. Cushing, of Mass., and
Pickens, of S. C., the latter being Chairman of the
Committee on Foreign Affairs, which Committee is
expected to make a report shortly on our relations ;
with that Empire.
The resolution asking an appropriation for the j
Cumberland Road, was then taken up and referred |
to the Committee of Ways and Means, without in
structions. The rest of the day was occupied in
receiving petitions.
In the Senate, after the presentation of some do
zen memorials and petitions, praying for Bankrupt
laws, the annexation of Texas, duties on Silks, To
bacco, &LC.
Mr. Benton spoke at length in favor of abill which
he asked leave to introduce, providing for the reduc
tion of the drawbacks on Sugar and Molasses, and
(o reduce the fishing bounties and allowance, which,
on his motion, was read twice- and referred to the
Committee on the Judiciary.
Mr. Benton also intioduced a bill providing for the
payment of Capt. Snodgrass’ company of Alabama
volunteers, who were engaged in removing the emi
grating Cherokees, which was read twice and order
ed to be engrossed.
Mr. Lumpkin then called up his resolution provi
ding for an adjournment in May. He alluded to his
previous remarks on the subject, and said that af
ter the most serious consideration, he felt satisfied
that the position he assumed was correct.
Mr. Webster followed Mr. L. and made a few re
marks in favor of the resolution, and showing the
waste of time and money committed by Congress
men, in thus spending long sessions, and doing '■
nothing.
Mr. Sevier also supported the resolution, and
thought if a day was not fixed, we might remain here
until the 4th of March next.
Messrs. Williams, of Maine,Grundy, ofTennessee,
and Smith, of Indiana, opposed the resolution. The
former urged as an objection, that the peculiar state
of affairs on the north-eastern boundary, required the
sitting of Congress until some definite knowledge of
the affairs in that quarter was ascertained. He there
fore moved its postponement until Monday week—
which motion was carried by a majority of six.
Mr. Dawson, of Georgia, presented to the House
the Georgia Revolutionary Claim for §120,000,
which was referred to a select committee, and will
be favorably reported on of course, as was the case
last year.

PHILADELPHIA, March 14. Cotton. —The demaivi j
has been less active this week, and chiefly for home use.
Prices are rather less firm than at our preceding report.
1 he week’s sales somewhat exceed 300 bales, at prices
ranging irom 81 to 10y cents per lb. for inferior to good
quality Mississippi, New Orleans, and Upland, and some
fine at If cents.

seme animation, the transactions in all descriptions ex
tending to nearly 1900 bales. This renewal of demand

ces, the reduction subsequent to the receipt of the advices
per Great Western, amounting to 4, and in some instances
even to -J of a cent per lb.; our quotations have been sub
jected to revision throughout in conformity with this
cnange. The sales embrace 1100 bales Upland at 7a 9, i

I lour, jne recent discouraging advices from England
have haa a tendency to depress the market, and for the
list tnroc days it has presented a very inactive appearance. :
Ihe tendency of prices has continued downward, and in i
some instances we farther reduce our quotations 121 a 25 !
cents. Os Western Canal, the sales have been confined to •
stn so parcels common brands at 85.37 V a $5,50, including
300 bids, for the eastern market at the former prices; hol
ders, however, yesterday generally demand'd $5,50 a £5
62}, Ohio may be quoted $5,25 with sales. For some de
scriptions ol southern, there has been rather more inquiry
principally for shipment to the West Indies, though :il
some reduction from former rates. We notice sales of TOO
hbls. Gcorgetou nat something under $5,37V, on time, ad
ding interest; 4 a 500 do. Howard street, $5,25, cash; 500
do. Philadelphia, $5,25. 99 days; Richmond Country, $5,
12} a $5,25; and Frederir.ksbure at $5.
Molasses. —The animation before notice has considera
bly diminished since our last, though without occasioning
any material variation in prices; the receipts have been
moderate, a part of which is going in store. The sales in
clude 130 bhds. Porto Rico, about3o a3l cents; 90 do. Trin
idad, 26 a 27; and Matanzas, in small lots, 24 V a25 all on
the usual time.
Oil. —Of Whale 10,000 gallons have been taken by the
trade at 30 cents cash. J
Provisions. —The demand for Mess and Prime Pork con
tinues limited to small parcels to supply immediate wants.
Mess and Prime Beef is in better request, with sales to a
fair extent, without further change in prices. Lard con
tinues to arrive freely, with sales of northern at 10; and
western 9 cents per lb. Hams, Smoked Beef, &e., are in
good demand, at former rates.
. Spirits. —The demand for Brandy is yet confined to tri
fling parcels as required to supply the immediate wants
o- the, trade. Other foreign descriptions also continue in
very limited request. Domestic Whiskey is dull at 25 cts.
for drudge casks; Mils, are more plenty and may be quot
ed 26 for State Prison, and 24 a 25 for common qualities.
Sugars. —The market remains as noticed in the early
period of the week, quite in tetive for all descriptions; pri
ces also h ive continued without variation. The sales em
brace, 150 bhds. Porto Rico, part for refining at? a7‘,and
in addition for refining, 350 do. on terms not made public;
1.50 do. St. Croix, 7$ a BiJ-, with a few ato; 50 do. New Or
leans, 4il a s}; and 400 bags Brown Siam, 6 cts. The stock
of Box is much reduced, the new crop of which is in fair
demand. Sales were also made of 40 boxes white Havana,
10; 50 do. brown, 7; and 65d0- Trinidad,7V cents, all on the
| usual time. We understand 2300 hags Cochin China are
i to lie shipped to Genoa, from first hands.
I Freights —To Liv erpool remain without change; though
| since the arrival of the Great Western, there is rather less
offering. To Havre, the packet of the 16th last., is filling
up at our quotations.
Exchange. —The amount of business transacted in ster
ling since our last has been to a very limited extent, both
buyers and sellers preferring to await the departure of the
Great Western on the 19th. On| London a few sales were
made at 8 a B}, witli some at 8 per cent, premium; and on
France, at f.5,26} af. 5.25. On the remaining places there
has been but litte, done. —Price Current.
NEW ORLEANS, March I!.— Remarks. —The market,
generally, has undergone no change of importance during
the last three days. Western produce continues to arrive
in considerable quantities, but a large proportion of the
principal articles is for shipment to the north, or limited
above the present prices; and tiie stocks on sale are there
fore but moderate. The demand, however, for all articles
except Flour, is still confined to small parcels. The stock
of Cotton is ample, and all articles of export continue to
be greatly depressed by the advance in sea f.eights and
the absolute difficulty of effecting shipments, even at flic
: high rates which are current, in consequence of the uu
precedcutcd scarcity of vessels.
The weather since Friday has been clear and pleasant,
with the exception of a slight rain on Monday evening.
Cotton. —Arrived since the 6th iust. 13,518 bales.’ Clear
ed in the same time, 15,550 bales, making a reduction in
stock of 2,032 bales, and leaving on hand, inclusive of all
I on ship-board, not cleared, on the 10th instant, a stock of

There has been a very fair amount of business doing in
Cotton since our report of last Saturday morning, though
the market, owing to the further advance in the rates of
freight, has maintained a drooping character. The busi
ness of Saturday amounted to fully 3,500 bales, but the
sales, in most instances, were at a slight decline on previ
ous rates. On Monday, holders made some further con
cessions in favor of buyers, which induced them to operate
more freely; the sales of that day having reached to up
wards of 6,000 bales. Yesterday there was less doing, only
about 2,300 bales having changed hands at the time our
inquiries terminated. The decline in prices Ims been fully
a quarter of a cent, and our quotations have been altered
accordingly. The sales during the three days amount to
12,500 bales, at prices ranging from 5} to 9} cents.

Sugar. —Louisiana—LThe Levee has a rather better sup
ply than at the date of our last report, but still the stock is
only moderate, and a fair demand exists for limited parcels.
Most of the transactions have been in good fair sugars, at 4
a 4.}c. Fine quality is still scarce and commands 4 ; c., still
very choice parcels bring 4fc. We still quote 3Va4s as
the extremes. There have been some sales on plantation,
st prices within the range of our quotations.
Molasses. —A fair demand exists ou the Levee, for bbls.
at 20 a 21c. per gallon. The market has a better supply.
On plantation the rates continue to be 15 a 16c. per gallon.
Flour.— Our report of Saturday last left the market dull,
at $4,25 for superfine with a downward tendency, as buy
j ers for shipment had ceased operating at that rate, and
were offering but $4. These offers were yielded to, and
on Saturday and Monday $4 for superfine was the prevail
ing rate; at which price large parcels were disposed of,
{ which much reduced the stock on sale, and holders yester
i dav wore demanding $4,12} a $4,25.
Pork. —Tiie stock of old pork being nearly, or quite ex
i hausted, our quotations are exclusively for new. The sales
are only in very limited parcels at sl6 for mess—sl2 for
M. O, and §l3 for prime. Bulk pork readily commands 54
cent, per lb., at which price there have been several sales.
Bacon. —The stock is only moderate, but the demand
continues limited. We quote hams at 9 a 10c.; sides 7 a74;
shoulders 5} a 6c. '
Whiskey . —Holders have obtained a further slight ad
vance, and we now quote Cincinnati, rectified, at 27 a 28c.
Common 24 a 25c. per gallon.
Exchange. —Having no material change to note, we con
tinue our former quotations, which are as follows:—Out

Freights. —We note a further advance in European
Freights, 13-16 d having been paid to Liverpool, and 24c. to
Havre. Coastwise freights arc brisk, and all descriptions
of vesssls are extremely scarce. Cotton per lb. to Liver
