000 bales. which would be a falling off of this year’s crop
of more than 200,000 bales:, a quantity not sufficient in our
opinion to justify the serious apprehensions that seem to
be entertained in certain quarters of a decidedly short
crop. Should it, however, under more adverse circum
stances than ran at present be foreseen, turn out to be
shorter than we now anticipate, the experience of former
years will go to prove that consumers have known how to
aeeo.nmo late themselves without any material change in
prices, to a yield nearly twenty-five percent, less than that

j only Line carrying the great Northern:Mail, in
JL conn ctien with the Charleston and Wilmington
Steamboat and Rail-Ro id Line, commencing at tlie nortb
i era end oft It at line and running through Pete'sbu- g, Rich
mond, Fredericksburg, Washington, Baltimore, Ac., by
Rail-Roads and Ste nibonts.
Travellers will fi <1 this line perfect throughout. Tlie
Ruil-Koads are in fine order —the Engines and Cars new,
and oftho most approved construction, and the Steamboats
unsurpassed by any in the Union. There is now no delay
at any poi A and no expense or trouble attending tlie tran
sition of persons or baggage from one Rail Road to un
i other. From Richmond no th, the route is now over by
i daylight, and the trip is made from Weldcn to Baltimore
in 21 hours, including all stoppng s.
Os the two routes going north from kite Wilmington
Rail Road, the Mail route is the short st by 20 miles, and
being'nearly all rail-road it will he found the most certain
and expeditious. The other line through Portsmouth
ran only compete with it, when it bason early start, with
favorable weather, fair winds and smooth writer. This
w ill be evident t o every traveller when lie reflects that it
has nearly’2oo miles of steamboat navigation, on a wide
Bay, for the most part out of sight of land.
On the Mail Line, there are no changes from cars to
I steamboats in the dead o night; no starting from a crowd
ml harbor in the dark; no delays from fogsorgales of wind;
no sea-sickness, and no lonrr line of steamboats forced to
run r.t the top of their speed toget through ia time—all ot
which will be found on tlie Portsmouth route. The Mail
Line will he found the most interesting of tlie two, as it
passes through large and flourishing towns, a pleasant
country in sight of Mount Vernon (close to which the
steamboat ou the Potomac passes,) and through Washing
ton City’, which, it is believed, are much more agreeable
objects than tha pines and swamps, or the endless pros
pect, of water on the other.
The Mai! Line is the only direct route to Washington.
Passengers by it reach there a day ahead of those who
take the other line. It is the only, route to the Virginia
Springs. There is now on this route In the direction of
’ the Springs. Iff) nii'es of rail road carrying passengers
w ithin o days ride of them.
The Fare is the same to Baltimore as by the other line,.
