“Mr. Corn.vc:
“Washington, Sept. 15. 1810.
“Dear Sir;—The following experiment, nnd un
paralleled production of sixteen barrels, three peeks,
and four quarts of corn, made upon one acre of poor
land, without anv manure, save that of leaves, indn
»■«>. me to offer you this for publication. Ihe fol
low in? was the process.
■*‘The land was broken up in November, and
thrown into broad flat ridges, two feet w ide, and six
fee I apart. It lav in that situation until the. middle
of March, we then run a furrow, with a small rooter,
in the middle of the flat ridge, and a similar one on
each side of the middle furrow, nine inches from it—
making three rooter furrows on each flat ridge—and
dropped the corn in each rooter furrow, double the
♦ptantifv wc intended to let stand. When brought '
to a stand, our intention was to leave the stalks ‘
three feet apart in each furrow, which would give *
about eight thousand five hundred stalks to the a
ere. When the corn was up, thinned, and had obtain- |
ed the height of six inches, we put on a coal of j
loaves, about three or four inches thick, covering the
flat ridge all over and around the corn; then plough
ell and hoed it, covering the leaves with soil. In i
•ihoiit twelve days, we repeated n similar process —
laid the corn hy some time in May, and then covered
the ground all over, between the rows, about six
inches deep, with leaven, which wen; put on nnd
covered while wet, in order that the ground might
retain its moisture, to prevent the crop from firing.
44 Ihe rows were 30 bv (I'j yards, making 39 double
rows, HO yards long. Wc gathered and measured
three of the double rows, two on cadi side, and one j
in the middle • the three rows produced ten bushels
iti llie ears, which shelled out six bushels one and a j
half pecks. A short calculation will show that, as i
the three rows produced si x bushels and ihrcc-eigths ,
<<( a bushel, the whole product of the 39 row s was I
eighty-two bushels, three pecks, and four ipiarfs for |
’[hoot an acre. The corn being so (hick, might have
tired in a dry season, and umpiesfiohahly would, if
iwot protected hv the leaves.

THE COTTON CHOP.
We Inve rec iit.l v travelled through several counties in
»his section of Georgia, and have every where seen ami
beard of the devastation of the worm. Many stalks from
tfonr to six feet high and well branched, have noUt single
■grown Imwl upon (li -m; and we have scare dvseeWa stalk !
which has not lost trout hall to three-fourths of its howls I
and forms. The. weed p esenls a fine appearance to a
a sn;i| observer, lint liponi inspection there i< found j
to he a great destruction ofhowls and forms. At this |
season .a cotton field usually presents a beautiful ap- 1
p noance (ruin the emc ties* nninher of red ami white
Iddorns. Scarcely a hloom can he seen. Wc state the o
1 hings as facts. We know their truth from personal ob
servations. I.et others make their own inferences. For
ourselves, we are convinced, that if other portions of the |
cotton growing region have suffered as we have here, the ;
crop ol 1840 will lie unusually short.

▼ 'This institution will resume business on the first
of October next, and until a general resumption of specie
payments, will continue to pay her liabilities!!! sneli funds
as ure passing at par, either in the western part of Geor
gia, North Alabama, or East Tennessee. When a general
resumption takes place in this State, the. Western Bank
will he found behind no other Bank iu redeeming her
notes w ith specie.
This bank, like many others, had done illiberal business
in accommodation notes, or what I he hanks call slom /la/ter,
and which was found too “slow’’ to lie made available
when the great pressure came—a pressure that compelled
the .soundest and best managed banks to strike their
colors. It is not surprizing, then, that an institution,
whose managers deserved more credit for plain honesty
than financial skill , should ha \a shipped at such a crisis;
while other banks, with larger embarrassments and larger
credit, should have continued to be mo etna “things of
i life.”
j With a capital as little impaired as any hank that, lias
I lost any thing, the Western Bank has now in suit and in
I judgment, seventy-five or eighty thousand dollars of good
i claims, which during the present year sin- has been press
| ing to an issue, with a view to discharge fully her ohliga
| tioys to the public. With these means, and her cash in
j hand, she cannot fail to pay by the Ist of October, her
whole circulation (now little over thirty-live thousand dol
j lars) with all her other indebtedness, which is merely
{ nominal.
Thus circumstanced, the Western Bank of Georgia,
I will, in resuming her station among the Georgia Banks,
seek no more credit than she deserves, and can fairly
maintain in a legitimateconrse of business. Knowing her
condition to be sound, I pledge vvhatevcrrepnlutioil I may
have, that no business will be done, during my connection
| with the bank, that may endanger the rights of those vvb*« |
confide in the goodness of her bills.
All agency of the Bunk will he fixed at Columbus, Ga., j
which is designed as a convenience to the banks and peo
ple of the interior having settlements to make, with her.
All notes payable at the Agency, will he redeemed w ith
i specie, on demand, now and forever. Letters to the Cash
