lonal district, in Tree and fair discussion. and
we shall not fear the result.
The Whigs are very careful of thr*ir Ma~-
nus Apollo, Mr. Toombs; they take good care
to keep him out of danger, he has the conclu
sion at every meeting, and his own time,—
how very magnanimous—he must be their
forlorn hope.
And now, Messrs. Editors, the Knf hi r,j
Ribaldry lias been pleased to say that "Co!.
Lawson endeavored to mislead, and deceive
the people by garbling extracts, and pervert
ing the sense of documents, which he had
read to the audience.” Why it is rcallv won
derful that he was willing to admit that Col.
Lawson had sense enough for that; whv did
he not point out the garbling and the decep
tion? Wc suppose that would have been too
great a task for Ins federalism and his won
derful pen. He also stales that “Mr. Toom' s
called for Col. Lawson, but ho came not.”
This is really saying a great deal for Mr.
Toombs, Did not Col. L-uv-< n sny to Mr.
Toombs before he left that “a he was not per
mitted to reply to anything he might say, and
in consoifuonce of his feebleness, he should he
compelled to go into town and lie down?”
Would any honorable man have enquired with
an air. of triumph for one who had told him
l*eforehand that he was too weak and feeble
to remain, and whom he knew to be beyond
his calf? Tl this be Mr. Toombs’ chivalrv,
save us from It we say.
Messrs. Editors, we feel sorry that we
have been compelled to say so much in reply
to that poor unfortunate creature’s impu
dence and arrogance; he has been so misera
bly mauled both by Whigs and Democrats
anil come off*second best in all his difficulties,
that wc felt a disposition to let his remarks
pass by with that silent contempt which
they deserve. We have no objections what
ever for his remarks lobe seen by every man
who attended the meeting, for they will know
what estimate to place hereafter on his edito- !
rials an 1 account.-, of public meetings. We
should like to know ;1 Jones is a married man,
il he has any sort of a family, if they live at
the .Sand-hills or over the river. Perhaps af
ter exhausting the argument, he may wish to
stand by his arms, and then settle the diffi- ;
calty without an explanation.
