■JJ”A citizen of Stewart county writoa- to
ibe Savannah Georgian (mm Lumpkin, un
der date of 6th inst., as follows :
I think onr friend Judge Iverson will clear
the track by 500 votes majority.
1 hear the Planters complaining a great .
deal about their cotton. They say it is im
possible for them to make more than half a
crop, for the rains and boll worm have de
stroyed the cotton that should have been ma
tured in August, and it is now too late lor
the crop toyieid much.
The complaints are general, not only in
this county, but to the adjoining counties of
Randolph, Early, Raker, and Loe as well as
in Alabama.
Our corn crop cannot be beaten, and is the
finest that has ever been made in Stewart.—
Corn can, I think, be bought at twenty to
thirty cents per bushel. JSome,■! am inform
ed, are ollering to engage it at 25 cents.
Onr counhy i, remaikably healthy at this
time, and more so than any year since I
have been living in the country, which is
almost thirteen years! We however appre
hend that the east winds and copious rains
.may yet produce sickness.
The prospect of the Colton crop. —Until ro
-cetitly, the prospect lor an abundant crop of
cotton In this region, was unusually good.
Rut now there are almost continual com
plaints of the ravages ofihe worm. We have
b'-en informed by intelligent and observing
planters, that I lie crop is more generally af
fected by the worm than Urey have ever
known it. That in almost every farm, and in
almost every portion of the crop, the ravages
of this arch enemy to the cotton crop are
clearly and distinctly visible. What will lie
the final i.-sue, to what extent and how long
these ravages will continue, lime and weath
er alone can determine.— 'Tuscumbiu Demo
crat, 1 i)lh.
The last Cothm Season. —The amount of
the whole crop of the last year, for this State,
us included in the receipts from JSepf. 1,
i B-15, to Sept. I, 184 b amounts to 421.fj(i9
hales. The amount ofihe previous year be
tween the same dates was 515,743. The re
ceipts of last season, therefore, show a fall
ing olfot 94.U74 bales in tiiis Stale. In our
city the receipts for the last season were
3'J,t>2l. and those of ibe previous season
•63,733 —showing a falling oflfof'l4.lll bales.
.From present appearances in this part of the
(State, and from liie general accounts from
all other parts of the Slate, the receipts of
the present season will be still lower.—Mont
gomery Advertiser.
Short Crops —The Alexandria Democrat
states, il is a “fixed fact”tliat the Cotton crop
ol the parish of Rapides will not exceed ten
.thousand bales—a fourth of the ijuanlity
jnade in a good season.
Flaxseed. —The St. Louin Republican of
the 3d inst. says:—The people of lowa are
turning their attention to the cultivation of
Flaxseed, and in a few years it will be one
of its mist important products. One indi
vidual lias purchased two hundred tons,
which is in the process of delivery at Daven
port. He paid for it from fifteen to eighteen
aiodars per ton. It is to be prepared for use
by a patent machine, and when ready lor
market will he shipped to Europe.
The Setninoles, says the Van Ruren In
telligencer. con'inue to improve their new
country, and will this season raise good
crops; they are quiet and content in their
new homes.

3IOBILE, September 9.— Colton. —The market
lias been rather inactive during the week past—
neither holders nor buyers manifesting much anxi
ety to opera'e. There is but a very light stock ac
tually on sale. The buying has been chiefly for
the New Orleans market, with occasionally a few
bales for New York. We are unable to give quo
tations in the present state'of the market. Since
the Ist inst . the sales have probably been about
9t>o bales—all old cottons. We might mention in
cidentally that in these operaiions 7 cents have
been paid for ordinary and 7s cents for middling
cottons, bin these figures are not given a> a basis
of quotations. \\ e have heard of no regular trans
actions in new cotton—indeed we have received
this season or.ly 8> hales of new crop, against about
1000 bales lasi year at this time.
The receipts of the week amount to 145 bales,
i exports to 992 bales. 8:o< k on band Ist beptent
| her, 7813 bales—last evening 6966 hales.
I lie accounts from the interior still continue to
be quite nnlavorahle in relation to the incoming
crop. The backwardness of the plant, the injury
it has received, and is -till experiencing from rainy
weather, and more especially from the caltcr/aUar
and bore-tconu, are among the complaints we have
' from every quarter. In some districts the first visi
tatum from the worms is nearly or quite past, hut
even there, a new set is making its appearance,
I and threatening to complete the destruction com
menced by the original stock. The only sections
j of ibe cotton growing region where any thing like
a full average yield is expected, are ponians of
Georgia,South Carolina and Florida, where upland
cottons are said to be yet in a hoaeful condition.—
i \ ery little picking had been commenced any where
1 on the Ist of this month, which shows the unusual
backwardness of the season throughout the whole
j country.
