This difference will illustrate the backward- i

as the same efforts were made in Gotli ni

U e have still to report the cotton market as be
ing in a very unsettled state, as the supply is so
| limited, and the damage to the growing crop repre
i senled to be so disastrous, that most holders of the
I few lots in market either reittse to sell, or claim
i such prices as deter buyers from operating, except
to avert’ limited extent, and it 11 e* r circumstances
us pressing necessity for the fulfilment of freight I
contracts, &c. Tins being the position of the mar- \
kel the few sales that have been made have in
most instances bee" at considerably advanced
rates, hut the market is so irregular, and opinions
are so diverse iu regard to quotations, that we are
constrained to omit forthe present our usual table
of figures, and must content ourselves with ref ring
to I lie particulars of sales below for the rates paid.
It should be rein irked, however, that holders now
generally claim higher prices. The transactions
of tlte week amount to only about So ) bales, of
which 360 were new crop, ru iking o y about 450
bales sold thus far this season. The receipts of ‘
ih»- new crop continue to range generally from |
(mod Middling to .Middling Fair, with occasional- !
lyafew bales of Fair. 'The accounts from the I
interior, received during the past u ek, are of the |
i most gloomy character—much more so than ;.ny |
which have pre\i uisly come to hand. In the most i
' pr 1 fie sections of Louisiana and Mississippi the i
i cotton fields are represented, from numerous and
i the most undoubted sources, to be entirely stripped
i of foliage, while a gr at portion of tlte boils not
I muMired are destroyed by the boll-worm or catter
j pillar, and there now seems to he scarcely a doubt
remaining that the crop in these states must be
very nm erially curtailed, even w ith the m >st fa
vorable we a her for the remainder f the season.
Up to this time, however, no favorable change in
the weather has heeri realiz •«), it having rained
every day. an ! sometimes with great \ tolence,
since onr last weekly review. 'The same charac
ter of weather has been experienced in t lit* in erior,
preventing the operations of picking to any impor
tant extent, and the c mparative receipts of new
crop to this date are 1035 hales, against 22.578 b.,
last year. 'The total receipts at this port since Ist
September, have been only 2510 hales, of which
1116 were from Mobile; and the whole stork now
on sale, including all description-, is estimated at
| anont ! OUO hales, tlte receipts from Mobile being
i nearlyall forshi merit. The steam-bin B itannia
