tCPDr. Wistar’s Great D iscovery.
~--K was once said “There was nothing new under
the sun.” This has been emphatically true, in
regard to medicines. Hundreds of Pills, Panaceas,
Expectorants, and Specifics of all sorts h *ve been
puffed into notoriety, all made mainly of the same
ingredients, adding no new materials to the heal
ing art. Put Dr. \\ is tar's Balsam of Wild Cherry
furnishes a new medical agent, a new principle
evolved from nature’s own depository. It cures
Asthma, incipient Consumption, Liver Complaint,
am! all diseases of the Lungs, when nothing else
"ill. An honorable member of the Canadian Par
liament writes that it has cured him of Asthma of
leu years' standing. A. Williams, Esq., Attorney
at Law, 5J \V iliiam street New York, was cured
of the same disease of twenty-four years’ standing.
3ir. Cozens, of Ifadd.infield, N. J., makes affidavit
lo.it it cured him of a supposed Consumption, after
physicians had given him up to die; and so of hun
dreds of others.
Remember, we positively, in no case, palm off
unreal cures as produced by’ this invaluable reme
dy. Be sure to get ”Dr. Wislar’s Balsam of
Vi i d Cherry.”

Cotton. —The week opened with a fair demand
until about Wednesday, when the difficulty of
sefiimr Exchange checked further transactions.
The sales on Monday amounted to 2,500 bales, on
Tuesday 1800, Wednesday 2,500, Thursday 1500,
Friday 150. and to-day 500 bales, making the
week’s business 8.930 hales. In the absence of
demand it would he useless to say that there had
been a decline, but we must slate that the gener
al impression is that prices will give away as soon
as buyers are prepared to enter the market. In

[Correspondence of the Baltimore Sun.]
W ashington, Nov. io, 1648. i
This afternoon experiments were made in ;
the office of the Secretary of War with a
quantity of prepared cotton, brought by Mr. i
Robertson, otir present consul (u Bremen, for I
the express purpose of securing a pa'enl for !
the inventors, Messrs. Schcenbein & Boltger.
The whole cabinet—the President,General i
Scott, Col. Totten, and a variety of distin- j
guished gentlemen were present, and the ex
periments succeeded beyond the most san
guine expectation.
The prepared cotton ignites more readily 1
tl an powder, and its combustion is more per
fect. A haii was fired with it from a com
mon musket, from the window of the War
Department against the wall of the Navy •
Department, with immense force; an excava- |
tion of nearly lliedeplh of an inch being pro
duced in the wall, and the ball being com
pletely flattened.
The day after to-morrow, the expansive
faculty of the prepared cotton will be tried at
llie arsenal with the musket pendulum. It
will undoubtedly succeed, as similar experi
ments have succeeded with it in Germany,
•Switzerland and England.
Prepared cotton is nothing else than gun
powder in a purer state and a more accepta
ble form. It contains precisely the same in
gredients—carbon, sulphur and nitre, and is j
manufactured with great ease, and may be
preserved even for months in water, AN that
is necessary is to dry it before using it.
When the preparation is i nee mad *, tuenty
fjur hours would suffice to prepare a suffi
cient quantity ol cotton, just taken fiom fire j
carding mnehine, to carry on our whole war |
with Mexico.
And yet the preparation is so simple, so !
clearly a scientific reduction of the known
property of each ingredient part, that it is
only a wonder that the same discovery has j
not been made years and years ago. The
inventors being about to lake out a patent, I
it would not be proper to say more on the i
subject now; in a few days (when tne patent i
will be secured) ail will lie published, and !
then the process will be found so simple that i
every man may henceforth make ins own
gunpowder as lie makes h;s own bread, or
boils iiis own potatoes.
The estimates of the War Department are
on the point of being got ready, and when
they are, all the estimates of tiie various de
partments will be published together. A
large revenue is expected f rom the'operation
of the Tariff of 164>‘), w hich may not tall
short of 28, 000,009, and exceed .$30,000,000.
The la.-l despatches received at lire Navy
Department does not seem to be very pacific.
The fact is, the Mexicans, if not brave, will
be found pretty well united, and perhaps more
tenacious than anticipated.
The remains of Commodore Nicholson will
be burned to-morrow morning.
NEW-YORK, Nov. 9. — Cotton. —The news has

ed, ur as would have resulted m other years. Peo
ple are extremely cautious, and embarrassed by

advance.
The sales of cotfon last week were about 6000 b.
prices steady throughout.
P. B.—Evening,—Sales of cotton for the day
1500, perhaps 2UUU bales. There are more sellers
than buyers, and prices, though firm, are on the
whole hardly to be quoted as advanced.
NOV. 10.—24 I’. A!.—Things are hesitating yet.
Cotton, sales 1500 bales, prices same as before
the news. — Jour, of Commerce.
Extract of a letter received in Charleston, dated
J1 A V RE. Uc;t. 17.—The exciting advices hru tight
by the steamer 4th iust., ami received here yester
day only, have given new stimulus to our Cotton
Market. Over 6000 bales have been sold since
yesterday, mostly to speculators, at an advance of
fully 2f. on our preceding quotations.
The fears of actual want of Grain are daily di
minishing, and though food generally is yet com
paratively high, a gradual decline in the price of
necessaries, ts taking place and expected to con
tinue.
Ouradvices from the interior, concerning the
sale of Yarns, are rather encouraging; prices con
i linue to advance.
