RESULT OF THE BREACH OF PRO
MISE TRIAL.
We have already informed nus rea
ders that an interestin'? breach of pro
mise trial—Hayes versus Hayes—was
before one of the courts of Louisville, it)
which Miss Nano Hayes claimed $20,000
from Mr. John Hayes for a breach of bis
marriage prom Le. Miss Hayes, it ap
pears, is an accomplished young ladv,
living wiih her father and mother and
their family in Louisville. Her chcum
stances are not very aflluent, but she sup
ports herself in genteei style bv teaching
music. John Hayes, the defendant, is a
wealthy grocer, mho seems bankrupt in
every sentiment of honor—at least of sen
sihilny. After sporting with her atfoc
tions for some two years and a half, he
abruptly broke off bis visits and married
u Miss Dwyer. This suit was the con
sequence.
Referring to the case, the Louisville
Courier of the 21th ull. says:
‘‘This very interesting trial was concluded
yesterday afternoon. Pirtle commenc
ed bis argument in the morning, at 9 o’clock
and did not conclude it until nearly 5 o’clock,
P. AJ. His effort is spoken of as a most able
and powerful cue; and thL speech, for com
pleteness, force and eloquence, is regarded
as the best ever made by the distinguished
gentlemen. Throughout the day the court
room was crowded to excess bv ladies, who
appear to have taken great interest in the
suit. Judge Pirtie must have felt compli
mented by such a large and such a fair ta
lendance.
The jury, after being out a very short I ime,
brought in their verdict, winch was }jj>()000 I !
damages for the plaint .ts—the defendant to
pay costs! iSo Air. John Hayes had to pay
“pretty dear lor the whistle,” or, in oilier
words, for liis courting frolic ! As a lesson
to all gallants for the future, this verdict will
probably be worth considerably more than
that amount, large as n is. Gentlemen must
be more particular how they trifle with the
lender affections of innocent young ladies.—
If they will behave badly, they are now
aware ol what will be the consequence.
It appears that ‘old Hayes,” lor he is
somewhere in the fillies, played the gay
deceiver to a highly respectable young
lady of this city also. To this, too, the
Courier alludes in the followin'? words—
C*
we leave a blank for the name, which the
Courier gives in full:
It was currently reported last evening, that
Miss M******* a J H dv ol New Orleans, ar
rived in our city \esterday lor the purpose
of bringing a suit lor a breach of marriage
contract against Mr Joint Hayes. It is
alleged that Mr. Hayes was engaged to Aliss
morning apjoin.edlor the nuptials, he lei I
that city without fulfilling the appointment,
although the lady had arrayed herself in her
wedding dress, anticipating the speedy con
s uniat ion of the happy event. IShe was dis
appointed. and now,to use avu gar phrase,
she is alter her faithless lover wiih “a sharp
stick.” VV e made dillipe it mqiiiru s, but were
unable to ascertain whether the report of
Miss "s arrival was true n no .
A tinker of the Louisville papers con
t id it' iherepoit of Mis. s ai rival.
We trust, however, she will not fail to
hnng suit, if she have cause, and make
him bleed to the tune of, al least, another

Laconic. —lt is a c< m non idea that the
most laconic military despatch ever is
sued, was that sent by Caspar to lue Horse
Guards at Rome, containing the memo,
rub e words, “ Vent, Vidf Vici," and per

of brevity has been found. The despatch
of Sir Charles Napier, a fie r the capture

brevity and truib, is, however, far beyond
if. The despatch consisted of one em
phatic word, ''Peccavt” ‘ I have Scinde,"’

MOBILE, Dec. s.— Colton—' The receipts at
this port since the dale of our last weekly review
are 10,732 bales, and ihe exports 3.694, —leaving
the stock on hand and on shipboard 25,204 bales.
The receipts same time last season were 6,411
bales, and the stock on hand was 37,676 bales, —
The aggregate receipts this season are 32,278 bales
against 64,395 same time last year.
The week just closed opened on Saturday with
a disposition on the part of factors to meet the
views of buyers, as indicated the preceding day,
and some 1200 bales changed hands at a slight de
cline on our last quotations. The sales of Mon
day were 500 hales, of Tuesday 400, and of Wed
nesday S(H), Ihe market heco ing gradually easier;
mi Thursday 700 hales were sold, and yesterday
the sales reached 1000 hales, making th« aggro
irate of the week’s transactions 4300 bales, and
the dec line fully «c. on the quotations of last week.
It will be noticed that even at this decline, pur
chasers do not come freely into ihe market. In
view of the upward tendency in freights and the
accumulation of stock, they are claiming further
concessions.and we raty remark that the large-r
portion ot yesterday’s transactions were at our in
side figures.

cotton is arriving more freely, and we may soon
expect an uninterrupted navigation and a full

In regard to the incoming crop of the United

inclined to the opinion that 1,900.000 bales may
be considered the maximum, we are none tbe less
satisfied that it is a basis on which operations may
be safely founded.
