AUGUSTA MARKET.
Monday mgiit, Dec. 28, 1816.
COTTON.—The transactions of Saturday,
amounted to about 1200 bales, at rather (tetter
rates, than were quoted in our paper of Friday
morning. To-day, there has been a moderate
amount of business done without any further
change in prices.
SAVANNAH. Dec. 25.— Cotton. Arrived
since the JBth lust. 11.778 hales ( pland (106-1 by
Central Rad Road) and 181 bales Sea island, and
cleared tn the same time, 5188 bales Upland an I
ij. ba!es Bea Island; leaving on hand, including
ail on shipboard not cleared on the. *2sih lust., a
slock of 48.587 bales Upland and 75G bales Sea Tsl
ttnd, against y‘J6o bales 1 pland and Oil bales Sea
Island at the same period last year.
e have had a fair demand fur Colton in this
market.since our last review, without, however,
any marked change in prices up lo Monday, when
the news per Cambria, came to hand, ."he brought
advices from Liverpo J to the 4lh, and from Havre
to tile Ist inst, in the former market there had
been extensive speculative operations, and prices,
as near as vve can ascertain, advanced 4 a id per
lb., the market closing very firmly. The Havre
market remained without much change up to the
23d ult , but during the week ending the 30th, a
• light decline, was submitted to. These accounts
caused holders h re lo advance the asking rales I
a I cent., but purchasers were unwilling to oper
aie, and the sales on Tuesday, Wednesday and
yesterday, up to one o’clock, were very' trifling,
not reaching in the three days 800 bales. To
wards the close of business yesterday, however,
some few purchasers entered and took about 800
bales, and the prices paid were fully 4 cent ad
vance on those current at our last publication
1 he receipts at this port, this week, are heavy',
reaching 11,962 bales, against 5.925 last year.—
There i, a fair amount offering, and hold'ers are
stiff in their demands, at the improvement noticed
above. The sales this week sum up 6474 bales,
the greater portion of which was sold previous to
the receipt of the steamer s advices. 'The particu

• C HARDEST ON, Dec. 25.— (Jetton —We stated
In our report of the 19th inst. that the market du
ring the w eek Just brought to a close had been well
attended by purchasers. Under the influence of an
active demand, which sprung up almost immedi
ately, the market soon became animtted, ami at
the close of business on Monday, prices were re
ported 4 to |c up; and this improvement was well
sustained during the week. Saturday last was
comparatively a quiet day. Whether the heavy
operati ms of the previous fortnight or three weeks
bad exhausted the orders of buyers, or whether the
belief, which was generally entertained at the
lime, that vve were on the eve of the receipt ofad
v ices from the other side, checked operations, we
will not undertake to determine, suffice it to say
the sales were limited to some 95(J ' bales, at the |
currency given in our review of that morning.—
'Uu Monday the telegraphic accounts per the Cam
bria came to band, advising an improvement in
cotton of Id per ib. This heavy advance took the
trade by surprise, and completely unhinged ihe
market. European buyers had not received their
letter*and did nothing, and the sales were coniiu- J
*dto974 bales, on speculation. On Tuesday the j
private correspondence.catne to hand, bat there j
was a difference of opinion among dealers, rela
tive to the extent of the actual rise; and while for- |
eign operators were prices, a se
cond parry r entered the market, and the transac- ;
tidnsof’ the day again assumed a speculative char
acter; on Wednesday, however, buyers fur Euro- \
peau account yielded to a certain extent, and the i
wales reached fully 3600 hales. Yesterday the
transactions fell off. owing partly to the position
which holders had assumed, whose, stocks are
light, and partly in consequence of the failure of ,
tliU Northern mail. 'The market since the arrival 1
of the steamer has labored under a good deal of ex
citement, and prices have gone up from 4 to a full
ic per lb. In the present unsettled stale of the
market, the quotations below will approximate as
near as possible to the actual value of the article.
The receipts of the week reach 7813, and the. sales
in the same time comprise 7906 bales, as follows :

MOBILE, Dec. 23.—Navigation on onr rivers
may now be considered as fairiy opened; though
our market has hardly felt its in Him* nee as yet, ex
cept as it is affected by downward freights. As a
natural consequence Gotton, Corn and oilier pro
ducts of the country begin to come in freely.
Cotton —During the first four days of our com
mercial, week the activity noticed in our last re
port continued in this market. During that tune
prices improved fully ic., and in some instant es
more. 'I lie daily sales have been estimated as
follows:—Wednesday 2000, Thursday 2560, Fri
day 2500. and Saturday 4000 bales. On this day,
holders, towards the close of business hours, har
dened up iu their pretension to such an extent as
to check operations—asking 94 cents for low class
middling*. In some few instances 91 cents were
obtained. On Moutlay, factors still adhering to
their claims, buyer* stood aloof, and only some 4LO

■ ; at the current prices of Friday evening and Satur
day morning. Yesterday. holders generally mani
fested a willingness to meet the views of buyers,
but there was very little done, the sales last eveo
-1 ing only counting up some 700 bales. This makes
an aggregate for the week of about 12.200 bales.
Tlie principal transactions hate been for France
and other continental markets, and fur Great Bri
tain —and some on domestic account. It should
1 ! be noted that the high nites of freight have check
ed operations to a considerable extent during the
entire week. The market closes quiet. We sub
join the quotations current on Saturday morning,
reitarkiug that some factors are asking higher
rates, and refuse to sell except at an advance on
these figures. It should also he remarked that the
j market is comparatively hare of ordinary and low
class cottons, consequently the figures are nearly
nominal fur these qu ililies.
