Japanese Journalism,
The method in which Japanese news¬
papers are conducted is often amusingly
naive. A recent issue of the Nichi
Nichi Shimbun— which, like all its na
tsve contemporaries, is printed, not in
columnSj but in squares—came out
with one square blank, the empty
space being covered with a number of
straight lines. The editor apologizes
for the extraordinary appearance of the
paper, informing his readers that at
the last moment he found that what he
had writt&ii.was ali wrong, and had to
be taken out. He had no time to fill
up with anything else, and there was
nothing to be done but to leave the
space with nothing in it __ New York

The following article from the Democrat
Chronicle, of Rochester, N. Y., is of so
a nature, and emanates from so re¬
a source, that it is herewith re-pub¬
entire. In addition to the valuable
it contains, it will be found exceed¬
interesting.
Ib toe Editor of the Democrat and Chronicle:
Bat: My motives for the publication of the
most unusual statements which.follow are,
first, gratitude for the fact that 1 hai’o been
saved ondly, from desire a most horrible all death, who and, sec¬

sands of people are within a foot of the
grave and they do not know ii To tell how
I was caught away from just this position
and to warn others against nearing it, are
my objects in this day communication.
On the first of dune 1881,1 lay at my
residence in this city Mr surrounded by my
friends and waiting iny delith; Heaven
only words knows the agony I then endured, for
can never desoribe ii And yet, if a
few I feats previous, any one had told me that
was to be brought so low, and by so terri¬
ble a disease, I should HUvo ffooffed at the
idea. Ihad always been uncommonly strong
and healthy, had weighed, over 200 pounds and
hardly knew, in my own experience, what
pain who will Or sickness, were. Very many people
read this statement realize at times
that they are unusually tired and cannot
account for ii They feel dull and in¬
definite pains in various parts of the body
and do not understand ii Or they are ex¬
ceedingly appetite hungry the one day This and entirely with¬

way I felt when the relentless malady which
had fastened itself upon me first began.
Still I had I thought taken bold it was Whiph nothing; would that probably

and at a pain in my head,
but as it would come one day and be gone
the next, I paid but little attention to it.
However, my stomach was out of order and
my food often failed to digest, causing at
times great inconvenience. Yet I had
no idea, things even Meant as anything a physician, that
these serious or
that a monstrous disease was becoming fixed
upon me. Candidly, I thought I was suffer¬
ing from Malaria and so doctored myself
accordingly. But I got no better. I next
noticed I a peculiar passing—also color and that odor about the
fluids was there were
large quantities one day and vory little the
next, and that a persistent froth and scum
appeared ppern the surface, and a sediment
settled in the bottom. And yet 1 did not re¬
alize my danger, for, I indeed, seeing these
symptoms continually, finally became ac¬
customed to them, and my suspicion was
wholly disarmed by the fact that I had no
pain in the affected .organs liuvb or in their
vicinitjh Why I should been 2S blind I
cannot understand.
There is a terrible future for all physical

a person senses even may
then be too late. I realizod, at last, my crit¬

long list of common I really diseases, had. the symptoms

dition had really I become pitiable. The
slight symptoms terrible at first and experienced were
developed orders—the into little constant dis¬
twigs of pajn hod grown to
oaks of agony. My Weight had been re¬
duced from 207 to 130 pounds. My life was
a torture to myself and friends. I could re¬
tain no food upon my stomach, and lived
wholly by injections. I was a living
mass of pain. My pulse was uncontrollable.
In my agony I frequently fell upon the floor,
convulsively clutched the carpet, and prayed
for deadening death. Morphine pain,. had little or no effect
in the For six days and
nights I had the death-prsmonitory hic¬
coughs constantly. My urine was filled with
tube casts and albumen. I was struggling
with Disease of the
last stages.
While suffering thus I received a call
from my pastor, Rev. Dr. Foote, rector
of St. Paul’s church,, of this city. I felt
that it was our last interview, bat in the
course of conversation he mentioned ;
remedy of which I had heard much bn!
had never used. Dr. Fcoto detailed to me
he many remarkable cures which had come :____
under his observation, by means of thir
remedy, ticing physician and urged me to try it. As a prac¬
and a graduate of the
schools, I cherished the prejudice both nat¬
ural and common with all regular practition¬
ers, and derided the idea of any medicine out

Foote, beneficial. that I So finally solicitous, however, was Dr.
waive prejudice promised that I would
my and try the remedy ho so
highly recommended. I began its use on tb*.
irst day of June and took it according to
lirections. At first it sickened me; but this
f thought was a good sign for me in my de¬
bilitated condition. I continued to take it:
.lie sickening sensation departed and I was
'ib'e to retain food upon my stomach. In a
ew days I noticed a decided change for the
better, liccoughs as also did my wife and friends. My
ceased and I experienced less pain
han formerly. I was so rejoiced at this im
groved condition that, upon what I had be¬
lieved but a few days before was my dying
bed, friends, should I vowed, in the presence of my family
ind I recover I would both pub¬
licly :’or the and good privately of humanity, make known wherever this remedy and
whenever I had an opportunity. I also de¬
termined that I would give a course of lec¬
tures in the Corinthian Academy of Music
bf tins city, bating in full the symptoms and
-.1 most hopelessness of my disease and the
remarkable means by which I have been
saved. My improvement was constant from
that time, and in loss than three months I
had gained 26 pounds in- flesh, became en¬
tirely free from pain, and I believe I owe my
lifo and present condition wholly to Warner’s
Safe Kidney and Liver Cure, the remedy
which I nssd.
Since my recovery I have thoroughly re¬
investigated the subject of kidney difficul¬
ties and Bright’s diseaso, and the truths de
veloped are astounding. I therefore state,
deliberately that and as a physician, thatlbelieve
more than one-half the deaths whitli oc¬
cur in America are caused by Bright’s dis¬
ease of the kidneys. This may sound like a
rash statement, but I am prepared to fully
verify it. Bright’s disease has no distinctive
symptoms of its own (indeed, it often de¬
velops without any pain whatever in the kid¬
neys or their vicinity), but has the symptoms
of every other known complaint. Hundreds
of people die daily, whose burials are
authorised by a physician’s certificate of
“HeartDisease,” “Spinal Complaint,” “Apopiexy,” “Rheumatism,” “Paralysis,”
plaints, “Pneumonia,” when in reality and other it common Bright’s com¬
waB Dis¬
ease of the Kidneys. Few physicians, and
fewer people, realize the extentof this disease
or its dangerous and insidious nature. It
steals into the system like a thief, manifests
its presence by the commonest symptoms,
and fastens itself upon the constitution
before the victim is aware. It is nearly as
hereditary and as consumption, fatal. Entire quite as com¬
inheriting mon fully it as their families,
from ancestors, have
died, and yet mysterions none of the number kn ew or
realized the power which was re¬
moving them. Instead of common symp¬
toms it often shows none whatever, but
brings death suddenly, and as such is usually
supposed to be heart disease. As one who
has suffered and knows by bitter experience
what these he says, I implore neglect every one the who reads
words not to slightest
symptoms of Kidney death difficulty. will Certain

sult of such neglect, and no one can afford to
hazard such chances.
I am aware that such an unqualified state¬
ment throughout as this, coming the entire from land me, known as I
am tioner and lecturer, will arise the as a practi¬ and
of the medical surprise
possible animosity with whom I profession
and astonish all am acquainted,
but I make the foregoing statements based
upon facte which I am prepared to produce
and truths which I can substantiate to the
letter. The welfare of those who may pos¬
sibly be sufferers such as I was, is an ample
inducement for me to take the step I have,
and if I can successfully path in which warn I others from
