utig and fair
.own the thronged street,
playing in her hair,
.prings her tiny feet.
Hi . a Parian statue rose,
Eac.. mb fleet as a wild gazelle;
And more of poetry than of prose,
Spake in each movement of the belle.
An hour had passed and 10l i saw
A being sadly, sadly changed :
There was in every look a flaw,
Her every motion seemed deranged.
I saw the lieaux her steps attend ;
But she who late was blithe and fair
Now stooped to show the “Grecian Bend,”
And stooping lost each graceful air.
Bo that however a* it may,
I trust these lines will not offend;
And if my pen has gone astray,
Excuse It, fair one, when I say
’Twas tempted by the “Grecian Bond.” ,

Nelly.
Only a little child,
Who sings all day in the street
Nuch a tuneless song
To an idle throng,
Who pity her shoelt ss feet;
A poor, pale, pretty child !
With clothes so ragged and mean,
And a wild weird lace,
On which ne’er a trace
Os childhood’s joy can t>eseon.
Out in the damp, wet fog,
Out in the sleet and the rain,
Out when the cold wind
Hends its blast unkind
Through t er again and again ;
Out in tiie dreadful night,
By the hinge of the tavern door,
In hope us she sings
Os the pity tiiat flings
Some pence on the beer-stained floor.
Mothers who pass her by
.Shudder with terrible fear,
Praying her fate may
Never be someday
That of her little ones dear ;
Children who hear her sing
Stare at her features so wild,
O’er her life ponder,
Thinking with wonder,
"What, can she,too, bea child?”
Ont In the damp, wet fog,
Out in the sleet and rain.
Out when the cold wind
Sends Us blast unkind
Through her again and again.
Brought up in Satan's school,
Hell’s abyss falling in;
Is there no pity
In this great city
To save her from shame and sin ?

of the work in his Bureau, from which it
appears that liia showing for this year is

has been obliged to spend much time and
Iph'irou a few accounts, being those of the
Paymasters appointed early in the war,
who 4 opt their papers in a very bungling

with the remark that the amount of work
coming to his Bureau will be less when
the business occasioned by the war is

progress are completed, and that he will
then recommend the discharge of such
clerks as arc not needed.
Tuk Earthquake in San Fuancisco.
—A San Francisco lady thus describes her
recent earthquake experience in a letter to
the OJev*. laird Leader-. "Sitting quietly
in tl. dining room on Wednesday morn
in# hos >rc breakfast, smno of the family
with trie, aud others yet in their rooms,
then roue that unmistakable roar which
I kn v from past experience, accompanied
by ti viojent shaking of the building, rat
tliiof Windows, cracking and groaning of
timiers. the motion so*violent that wc in
stinctively rushed for the yard. It was
tlillii.it to keep our feet. I thought verily
it was the cud of time for us, and went out
in a sort of blind terror, expecting the
house to crush me before L could reach an
open space. After the shock was over I
passed from the yard into the street, and
then; the scene was indescribable. Many
vehicles, buggies, with gentlemen on their
way to their places of business, wagons
aud loaded drays, arrested as if by magic;
the street as far as the eye could see
crowded with men, women, and children,
pale with fear ; very near us a brick chim
ney had fallen from a two-story house to
tho ground, a brick hitting someone, who
was being carried into a house ; and still
nearer a lady in a fainting fit was being
attended to on the sidewalk. This was
tho tableau presented to me at the first
glance. After a lew moments, our earth
seeming to be terra firma once more, and
my nerves a little quieter, I went into the
house, aud sat down at the breakfast table,
but had scarcely tasted food before there
came another slight shock, and away 1
went lor the street, aiid then hack again
throe times before I could make a meal.
There were five slight tremblings, at but
fifteen or twenty minutes between. In the
street we heard the wildest rumors of
runaways, failing buildings, gas-houses
down, men crushed. Os course there were
many incidents of people fleeing from their
houses in scant costume, or in none and
in a hotel a lady told me of seeing three
gentlemen in the door ot a room, standing
in wild affright, each one tightly envelop
ed in a sheet, aud of a lady returning from
the street in her night dress, endeavoring
vainly to pull the crimping pins out of her
hair. From a house on one of the streets
there issued a woman with her hoopskirt
over her night dress, and as she stepped
out she caught her foot in it aud fell; four
other women, following, fell upon her, the
last one exclaiming, as she went down,
‘O, Lord, please don’t swallow me yet.’ ”
