/'* Louisiana—lmportant Character of
the Movement—Alarm of the Negroes —
A Colored Convention Called to Consoler
the Matter.
Chinese labor will be thoroughly tested
in Louisiana in the coming Spring.
Coopmanschapp’s agents have already
closed contracts for some four or five ship
loads, to be delivered at Key West by the
Pacific Id ail Steamship Com pany. A
New Orleans Letter of the 14th instant to
the New fork Herald says:
Mr. John William", Jr.,|one of the New
Orleans agents, is now on his way to Hong
Kong to complete the necessary arrange
ments He is accompanied by Tye Kim
Arr, native of Hong Kong, educated in
England, w! o has been for some time a I
resident along the coast of the Mississippi, j
and i thoroughly lamitliar with the soil, j
the crops, and the capabilities of Louisiana. j
Tye Kim promises to engage the services
of the finest class of coolie laborers, such
as are most familliar with that kind of |
cultivation that pays best in Louisiana,
namely, rice and sugar. The contracts 1
drawn up are for five years, and, on the
face of them, seem unexceptionably liberal,
both as regards rations and pay, These
arc the leading features :
First. We agree to work on plantation
or do any other kind of work that may be
assigned to us by our employer for the pe
riod of five years, beginning at the time we
commence to work, for which we are to be
paid by him, in gold, at the rate of nine
dollars per mouth of twenty-six days—
one-half at tbe end of each month and the
balance at the end of the year, the said
employer reserving or holding in his hands
twenty-five dollars of the earnings of each
year as a guarantee to him of the faithful
performance of this contract, but to be
paid to the undersigned on its being fully
carried out—not otherwise.
Second. Our pa- age to the United States
and ail advances amounting to (whatever
they may he) in gold, and paid by our
employer, we hereby obligate ourselves to
out of the first wages or earnings, together
with any other advances that he may make
to us.
Third- We are to be furnished by our i
employer with comfortable quarters and
rations of'five pounds of pork or its equiv- ,
alent in bacon or beef; fourteen pounds of j
rice; one-fourth pound tea per week; also j
a small quantity of ground for a garden !
spot. It is agreed that during the time
we arc working to pay the advances made ;
to us, we are to be furnished in cash one
dollar and a half per month and ten dollars !
per year for clothing, &c., and which
sums, if received, we are to return.
Fourth. We agree to work from daylight
till dark, with an intermission of one hour
each for breakfast and dinner, and during
sugar making to take watch at nignt, as
usual oo sugar plantations; but wo are to
be paid by our employer of half the night
thirty-five cents in specie for each night,
at the end of the month; but no labor is
to be required of us on Sundays, except
when necessary to save the crop, feed the
stock and protect the plantation generally.
We reserve the right during the Summer
months to take two hours for dinner, pro
vided we arc at our work by sunrise and
take our breakfast before we go out.
These five shiploads will be a test exper
iment. Should they succeed (as there is
the strongest reason to suppose they will)
it is scarcely possible t o over-estimate the
effect the movement will have on the
future of Louisiana. Most of the first
shipment.-t will be located on the rice and
sugar lauds in the vicinity of Bayou La
fourche. In that same district there are
thousands of acres of prairie land now un
cultivated, which can be turned into rioe
at little expense. Lu the whole State there
are certainly not less than three hundri and
thousand acres of swampy land available
for rice culture. This crop has of fate
years been cultivated more and more in
this State. It is less hazrrdous than
sugar or cotton, and pays bettor. More
over, the climate and soil of Louisiana pro
duce a description of rice worth at least
five cents a pound more than any East In
dian importation. The only thing lacking
is labor. That the cooiic immigration will
supply.
The negroes already are becoming alarm
ed. In the newspaper edited by J. Willis
Menard (rejected colored delegate to Con
gress from Louisiana) of this morning there
is published a call for a colored convention
to consider the best means of promoting
the agricultural interests of the colored
race, and to prevent the introduction of
ooolie laborers ioto Louisiana. The call
itself is so curiously suggestive that it is
worth giving entire in the Herald. Here
it is:
To the Colored Men of Louisiana—Call
for a State Convention.
A Stute convention of colored men is
hereby called to meet in the city of Baton
Rouge on the first Monday in November
next, at 12 o’clock m., for the purpose of
considering and adopting the best plan
and means for the promotion of the agri
cultural interests of the colored people
throughout the State and also to consider
all other subjects looking to their advance
ment and welfare. In view of the intro
duction of coolie laborers, and other dan
gers which threaten the colored laboring
classes, it is hoped that colored men
th.roughout the State will wake up and
come together to protect their interests.
Tho subject of land and homesteads lor the
colored laboring classes will engage much
of the attention of the convention, and ef
forts will bo made ty facilitate the acquisi
tion ol land by laboring men. Every
parish and district will be entitled to send
as many delegates to this convention as
they have Representatives in the Lower
House of the General Assembly. Besides
this apportionment, the following persons
will be ex-officio members of the said con
vention, viz;
The colored members of the General
Assembly.
I'lie colored members of the Constitu
tional Convention.
Tho colored State officers and the color
ed ministers of all the churches, regardless
of denominations.
This liberal apportionment is allowed in
order to engage the attention ol every
liberal colored man in the State in the
great work of advancing the agricultural
interest of our people.
Why not? New England mill-owuers
extort protection for their manufactures to
tho detriment of tho rest of the country.
Why should not tho powerful all-controling
political clement of the South extort pro
tection for their labor to the injury of
everybody else ? To this call are append
ed the names of fifteen colored State Sen
ators and representatives, and four or five
colored “reverends.” The proceedings of
the convention may be looked forward to
with some interest.
Wilcox, Gibbs & Co.—ln order to
meet the wants of a large and increasing
trade, the firm of Messrs. Wilcox, Gibbs &
Co.,direct importers and dealers in standard
fertilizers, who have been doing business
for many years in Savannah and Augusta,
find it necessary to open a branch house in
Charleston to supply their customers in
the Carolina*.
Mr. W. C. Macmurphy, who has been
for three years in charge of the house in
this city, has moved his headquarters to
Charleston for the purpose of superintend
ing the affairs of the firm in that city. We
take great pleasure in commending him to
the press and public in our sister city of
Charleston.
The'many friends of Mr. John W. Ans
lev, who has been absent from this city tor
a few years, will be pleased to learn that he
has charge of the Augusta house of Messrs.
Wilcox, Gibbs & Co’., where he will be
found always ready to do the agreeable in
supplying tho planting interest with the
l’hoeuix. Peruvian, and W.lcox, Gibbs &
Cos ’s Fertilizers.
Transplanting In Autumn.
The question is often asked: What is
the best time in Autumn to set out trees?
Cau we do it while tbe_ leaves are yet
green, or wait till near Winter, after they
have fallen ? The answer may be, do it
whenever the work eau »e well done, and
while the soil is in proper condition as to
dryness for working properly. If done
early, the leaves must be all first carefully
stripped off, to prevent the rapid evapo
ration of moisture. We have known trees
to have been entirely spoiled in a few
hours by wilting, from carelessness in not
removing the leaves when taken up. Iu
the Northern States, nurserymen usually
commence digging by tho first of October,
fcotue trees have entirely ceased growing
by this time, including generally cherries,
plums, and standard pears. If the leaves
are remov..d, they may now be taken up
and transplanted, as well as at any time
iu Autumn r the following SpriDg. Others
ha 1 , not iuily " oupLted the ripening of
the young wood, which is effected through
the assistance 1 '-he leaves. The only harm
done in taking them up at this time, is in
giving uomatured shoots or some parts of I
the trees, instead ot those well ripened
and hardened, and the result will be that |
some of the tips may be nipped by the!
fr >sts of Winter, or they will not start in
Spring with so much certainty and vigor.
Hardy kinds, such as the apple, will not
be much injuredin this way; and the peach,
although tender, should be shortened Lack
in Spring in any case.
1 twill be safe, therefore, with a few
eieeptions, to take up trees any time af
ter first of October—care being taken to
do the work well, as already indicated.
The soil should be in such condition as
to bo *•- • lr ma le fi e and mellow, so that
it may be fil ed in perfectly among the roots
without having interstices. Staking
afaiMt wind, or effecting the same pur
pose by a mound of earth about the stem,
should not be omitted.
We havu never succeeded better < than by
taking up trees about mid-Autumn heeling
them ii by burying the roots and half the
stanis fi r Wintering, and setting out early
in Sprieg. They, however, do quite as
well set cut in Autumn, provided they are
hardy- rts. and the site is not a windy
on#. In hc-elipg in for Winter, it is abso
lutely essentia! to fill in all the interstices
among the root* very compactly with fine
earth. M any trees are needlessly lost by care
lessness in this particular. The roots are
injured by drynes* or mouldincss, and the
mice find easy acceis among cavities. To
exclude mice effectually, the heeling
ground should be clean and a s mooih
mound of earth raised on all sides about
the trees. — John. J. Thomas.

\ invention oi power whereby ail friction is overcome. The simplicity, economy and durability of this Press astonishes
it . w “° ® ee it, and the more so, that a power so simple should so have been unappropriated. The strain is wholly upou
two Iron Bars 13-4 inches square, operating on these bars as if two men were pulling at each end iu contrary direction, which will
j su . staiQ a strain of UK),OOU pounds each. With this Press two men can do all the packing or pressing of a 500 pound bale inside of 8
minutes, and 11 need be, one man can operate, only requiring more time. This Press will not occupy more space than a Piano, and
! cau be placed under the Gin and receive the Cotton direct from the Gin, thus doing away with Lint Rooms, and can be readily
taken down and transported, as it is simple and light. We can supply these Presses cheaper than any yet offered. Will send cir
lO,ayy during, and would advise all wanting Presses to withhold buying until they examine this.
Tiiese Presses are now being manufactured in Atlanta, and will soon be set dp on exhibition there, in Macon, Augusta, and till
important points throughout the State, where its workings can be seen.
All are assured that as between this Press and any other there is no argument as toils merits over ail others.
W ith the Irons, any ordinary workman can put up the Press.
