AG RIC U LTURE.
Acrltulliire In Georgia.
Despite ali the disadvantages of poverty
aid indifferent labor, there has been
more real progress in agriculture, in thi-
Stvte, since the close of the war than in
any other branch of industry. It is safe
to say that in knowledge of the soil, its
capabilities, and the more effective modes
of developing its wealth with the least
amount of labor, our planters have, with
in the short period stat and, made greater
advances than they did in the twenty years
preceding. This is saying a great deal,
but we are convinced it is cot a word too
rauoh. Plantation labor is to-day yielding
more in a-tual values than at any former
period of our history; and, so far from re
sulting from an improved industry on the
part of the laborers, it is in spite of a sad
deterioration in this respect. It results
from tbc superior intelligence and energy
of the planter himself, from greater econ
omy, and from the various natural and
artificial auxiliaries that he has called
to bis service and directed wisely. The
negro dots not work more or as much,
but under the guidance of superior enlight
enment on t'jc part of his employer, he
works more effectively
There are two things which tl Georgia
planter has learned of late that are con
tributing to Ids success and overcoming the
difficulties that encompass him on every
side. One is, that there exists in the soil
beneath the depths to which he formerly
descended with his instruments of agri
culture. a vitality and energizing principle
to which he has long been a stranger. Ddbp
plowing develops anew fertility and at the
same time protects the.crop from the ele
mental disasters of heat and drought- This
is one secret, and be avails himself of the
newly acquired knowledge by introducing
improved implements and adding to the
power that moves them
The second secret is, the now almost
universal use of commercial manures,
which tor many years were set down as
an expensive humbug and the invention ol
theorists. The experience of the past year
has settled this question beyond dispute
The most inveterate old fogy and hater of
hook farming has been compelled to part
with his prejudices, and in self-defence
adopt a system under whitfh his neighbors
were leaving him far behind. And it will go
on to increase from year to year. The ship
ments of fertilizers from thismarketalone,
la t year, appeared marvellous; hut they
proved a sucoess despite the limited inform
at ion regarding their proper use,and there is
every prospect that the trade will he more
than doubled the coming season. The actual
production, with th<dr aid; of from forty to
sixty bushels oi wheat per acre, where but
eight to ten gr .w before, and three bales of
ooiton to the acre where a half bale had
been considered a good crop, has struck
the scales from the eyes of everybody, and
inaugurated anew an 1 glorious era in the
agricuitu eof the South. No man can
re-bet such arguments as these. They
amount to demonstration, and the re
form may now be considered as fully estab
lished Great as are the results already
attained'to,witn a better knowledge of
fertilizers and thei» adai tation to different
soils, with increased application, wc shall
in th ! course of a few years, sec results
that now appear to us as impossible. We
have yet no conception of the number of
the human race that the earth can be
made to support. There is no part of the
world where it can be better tested thaD in
our own State of Georgia, and we are glad
to see her people animated by that pro
gressive spirit that will develop her capa
bilities and give her a double claim to the
title of "Empire State of the South.”—

Fencing Stock Out or In.
Editors Southern Cultivator: The
Livingston Agricultural Club has render
ed the public a valuable service by its clear
and able report on the question of ‘‘Aban
doning the use of fences, and the enactment
of a stock law,” which appeared in the
September number of your journal. I re
gard the fences, that may bo saved by
proper legislation, without detriment to
any interest, as equal to one half of a fair
rent of some farms, taking them as a whole.
In other words, relieve Southern farmers
of the present expense of fencing out in
truding stock that have no moral right
tq consume, or damage in any way, the
crops grown by any person on his own
land, end you will double the value of all
productive soil. It is obvious, that the
higher the tux imposed to keep stock out
of a wheat, corn, or cotton field to make a
crop, the less inducement there is to culti
vate the same; consequently, there is less
demand for labor than there would be if
this tax were removed. Tbo poor who
now keep a few hogs and cattlp at large,
lose far more by the depreciation of their
wages, whether they work by the month,
or crop on shares, than they gain by this
untimely free stock range. • Stock raised
in this way in settled counties, co.-ts the
community at large ten times .ore than it
is worth to the owners. This remark is
based on my own experience, this Summer.
I have kept a number of young hogs for a
neighbor all Summer in a good clover field
well fenced, for nothing, because it is far
cheaper for me to fence them in one kmall
field, than out of several large corn fields.
Indeed, to fonee many fields against small
shad-bellied swine, jumping sheep, and
unruly cattle, taxes common laud more
than the use of it is worth. Henoe, many
million a res no out as a common waste
that would be cultivated, to the incalculable
advantage of all classes and interests, if
this fence burthen were taken off. Then
a poor farmer, who is able barely to pay
for fifty acres and a mule, could plow,
plant, sow and gather in his crops, with
out the expense of working one pannel of
fence beyond what encloses any little stock
ho may choose to keep. Give this encour
agement to buy land m the South, and
defend honest agricultural industry from
all invasion, by man or his beast, aud you
will soon change squatters aud bad renters
into independent land-holders and con
servative freemen.
It is a mistake to suppose a poor labor
ing man in the South can never lay up
money enough to pay for a few acres —far
more t-hau the g'eat Cineinuatus had wbeu
he was called from his plow to save his
country from the greatest peril. Pence
taxes and all others, on land, are uow so
heavy in the aggregate, that poor men can
hardly affird to owq any. In New York
State this onerous fenoe tax does not exist;
laboring men re'eive a dollar a day as
farm wages. Here I hire good men at fif
ty cents a day. There n larmermakesfit
ty tons of hay with less labor than l can
fence a meadow for such a crop. So long
as the poor, unwittingly, compel farmers
'o throw away so much labor in mauling
.tic rails, their wages must be low.

Cotton Seed Oil Cake. —Very numerous
and carrolully conducted experiments in
England and Germany prove that oil cake
stands very high as a manure, whether ap
plied by itself, or in combination with
other monurcs. It is adapted to all kinds
of crops, since it contains all the ingre
dients m cessary to the growth of plants,
and especially since it contains in large
quantity those most necessary ingredients
nitrogen, phosporic acid and potash.
The oil in the seed and in the oil cake
contributes nothing to its efficacy as a
manure. On the contrary it is rather a
hindrance, siuce it retards decay. It fol
lows, therefore, that the cake is greatly
superior to the seed, and that the more
thoroughly pressed the cake is, the better.
Oil cake is (from the large quantity of
nitrogenous matter and the case with
which it decomposes) essentially a stim
ulating manure, like Peruvian guano. The
following table give# the value of rope
seed cake as compared with other valued
manures. Cotton seed cake is still richer,
both because the cotton seed is more nitro
genous, and because the cotton seed cake
is tree from hull:
1 ewt rape seed oil cake, equal to IS.
20 owt. stable dung;
1J owt. rape seed oil take, equal to 1 ewt.
bone dust;
3 ewt. rape seed oil cake, equal to 1 ewt.
gooo Peruvian guano.
There can be no doubt that the relative
value of cotton seed cake is greater than
indicate by this table.
As food tor stock and as a flesh producer,
and therefore as a food for growing or for
laboring animals, oil cake is probably su
perior to the grains.
According to the experimennts of Lawes,
the distinguished English agriculturist,
the manure derived from stock varied im
mensively in value according to the nature
of the food on which the stock , fed. The
manure of stock fe‘d on cotton seed cake
stands first on his list, being more than
thirty times as valuable as the manure
from an equal weight of turnips, and four
times more valuable than the manure
derived from an equal weight of Indian
corn.
The following is Mr. Lawes’ table, show
ing the actual gold value of the manure
derived from one ton (2,000 lbs.) of differ
ent foods:
Cotton seed cake (hulled), $27 86; rape
seed cake) s2l 01; linseed cake, sl9 72;
maTdust, £lß2l;lentils, sl6 51; linseed,
sls 65; tare , sls 75: bealis. sls 75; peas ,
sl3 38; locust beans, $4 SI; oats, $7 40;
wheat. $7 0$; Indian corn, $6 65; malt. $0
65; barley. $6 32; clover hay. $9 64; mead
ow hay, $6 43; oats straw, $2 90; wheat
straw. $2 6s; barley straw, $225, potatoes,
$1 50; mangolds, $1 07; Swedish turnips,
91 cents; common turnips, 86 cents; car
rots, 86 oents.
These actual values are, of course, cor
rect. only for England, but the relative
values are of universal application, and
for this reason this table deserves to be
studied by every farmer. The relative
values seem to be closely connected with
the amount of nitrogenous matter con
tained in the food. I
It is quit; p< ible that this indirect ■
method of using tbo cotton seed cake as
manure may prove most prtfi table to the
hire ’ 7 replace the use of corn in stock
feeding.
It." great value of eotton seed, as ma- i
nure for corn, is well known to every
farmer. Its value also as provender, when
stock will eat it, is also well known. Now,
there can be no doubt that for both these
purposes, the oil cake is greatly superior
toll, c seed. As manure, it decomposes
read: y, and may be applied to all kinds
of crops, alone or in combination with
other fertilizers- As food, it is- eaten
readi-y bv stock, and is easily digestible. 1
believe that a given quantity of seed hulled
and pressed into cake, though greatly di
tn airbed in weight, will go farther, both,
as manure and as provender, than the I
seed from which it was pressed.

Messrs. Geo. Bain A Cos. for a copy of Henry
Mnlward A Go's circular, dated Chicago,
Get. Ist, which gives interesting inform
ation in relation to the hog crop of - tbc pres
ent sca-on. The circular is based upon let
ters addressed to many different points in
Illinois, tbe a. swers to which establish
that the general crop is about the same
this year as last. Illinois- reports from
eleven points that the crop is the same as
last year; from seven points that it is
large:; in Indiana eleven points about the
same, eight points larger, and nineteen
point:-: smaller lowa tour points about
the same, four points larger, and twenty
four points small r; in Missouri and Kan
sas five points about the same, five points
larger, and one point As to prices
now ,-flered to farmers by pickers, wc
learn that in Illinois a few contracts are
made at Bto lOe, per pound; in
j Indi.uia at 7to 10c. the latter price net:
in lowa no contracts, but farmers are ask
ing 8•- gross; in Missouri a few contracts
bave been made at 7 a Bc. gross, the latter
price for hogs delivered at points within
for'y miles west of Alexandria. Messrs.
Miliward & Cos. conclude that, with such
prospects, tho sofe security, of the packers
must be in insisting upon such price that,
while they afford the farmer ampleremnre
ratiori tor his labor, they may promise the
packer some profit," but unaccountably
neglect to furnish a formula by which such
a compromise can bo effected. This is the
more to be regretted, as the solving of tbe
question, “How can farmers and paekers
both get rich ;.t the same time?” would be
a beginning oi the solution of tbe cor Hiding
interests of producers and distributers

“THE ETLETCOTTOI PRESS.’’
i t'iT -.ff GR? - r s*=*
A NEW invectiou of power whereby all friction is overcome. Tbe simplicity, economy and durability of this Press astonishes
7 wfao see '*• an< l fCe more so, that a power so simple should so long bave been unappropriated. The strain is wholly upon
two (2) iron Bars 13-4 inohessquSre, operating on these bars as If two men were pulling at each end in contrary direction, which will
sustain a strain of lyo.OOb pounds each. With this Press two men can do all the packing or pressing of a 500 pound bale inside of 8
minutes, and il need be, one man can operate, only requiring more time. This Press will not occupy more space than a Pianp, and
can be placed under the Gin and receive the Cotton direct from the Giu, thus doing away vrith Lint Rooms, and can be readily
taken down and transported, as it is simple and light. We can supply these Presses cheaper than any yet offered. Will send cir
euiars to any desiring, and would advise all wanting Presses to withhold buying until they examine this.
lhese Presses are now being manufactured in Atlanta, and will soon be set up on exhibition there, in Macon, Augusta, and all
important points throughout the State, where its workings can be seen.
All are assured that as between this Press and any other there is no argument as to its merits over all others,
W ith the Irons, any ordinary workman can put up the Press.
