WKDXKsDAT MORNING, NOVEMBER 24.
AGRICULTURE.
Wilcox, Gibbs & Co.’s Gca.no Mill, j
—Th Savannah Republican of last Sat- i
ur !ay has the following notice of the en- 1
terprising bouse of Messrs. Wilcox, Gibbs !
k Cos. :
Wilcox, Gibbs & Go.’* Guano Mitt — j
Enterpriie Rewarded. This energetic :
firm some time ago bought the Planters’
Bank propetty on Bolton’s Wharf, at the
foot of Whitaker street, for the purpose of
converting the building—forty by sixty
feet—into a guano mill. The warehouse
and wharf room embraces two hundred
feet front on the river, running through
to and fronting on Bay street. The whole
arrangement of the premises-especially
the mill—to the purposes designed, was
made by Mr. Charles Gordon, who is the
chief engineer of the establishment, and
under whose personal direction t l ma
chinery, costing SIO,OOO, was ected.
The machinery is of superior English
manufacture, and is in every respect I
adapted to the work required of it.
Upon entering the establishment the I
rough guano is seen being thrown into the :
mill by half a dozen or more negroes, an j
elevator taking it to the fifth story, where
it passes into a revolving screen, which
clears it of all trash. After being cleaned j
it passes into the bagging room, where it
is packed and ready for shipment.
Messrs. Wilcox, Gibbs & Cos. are im- ■
porting seven thousand tons of Phoenix
guano from the Pacific this season, and
will have an ample supply of No. 1 Peru
vian guano, which two articles compose
their celebrated manipulated guano. This
ent'rc enterprise is conducted upon a prin
ciple which is as broad in a business sense
as it is suggestive of large returns to the
capital invested.
We congratulate Messrs. Wilcox, Gibbs
&Cos. upon the ene gy which they have
displayed in pushing to success an under
taking involving so large an outlay of
capital.
We may incidentally add that in case of
fire, the most ample means ha/e been
adopted to extinguish it. In less than one
minute copious streams could be thrown
upon the flames.
Planting Fruit Trees In the Fall. :
Tbe Fall is regarded by many experi- j
enced fruit growers, especially in the I
Norjhern States, as the best time for ;
plaihing fruit trees, and it may work well
in the South. At what time in the season j
tbe Work can be done most safely, is a 1
question often asked, and variously an
swered. be Boston Cultivator ias
been giving the suoject attention, and ar
rives at tde following conclusions: It
way oe done while the leaves are green,
or Jter they have fallen; the principal
thing to consider being the proper condi
tion of the soil, which must be sufficiently
dry and free from frost to ho easily work
ed II done early in AutumD, the leaves
must first be carefully stripped off, to
prevent the rapid evaporation of moisture.
Otherwise the trees may be entirely ruined
in a tew hours by wilting. In the North
ern and colder portions of the United
States, nurserymen usually commence
diggiug by the first of October. Some trees
have entirely ceased growing by this time,
inoludiog generally cherries, plums, and
standard pears. If the leaves are removed
they may now be taken up and transplant
ed, as well as at any time in Autumn, or
the following Spring. Other trees have
not at this time lully completed ihe ripen
ing of the young wood. These, if taken up
too early, will be liable to a future growth
of unnatural shoots on some parts of the
trees, instead of those wh oh are well
ripened and hardened, and will consequent
ly be less vigorous and thrifty. This injury
will be especially apparent in tender trees
like the peach. In taking up trees at any
time, the soil should be iu such condition
as to be easily made fine and mellow, so
that it may be filled in perfectly among
tb> roots without interstices. Staking
against wind, or effecting the same purpose
by a mound of earth about the stem,
should uot be omitted. Stones placed
around tho surface of newly set trees, are
best of anything to hold roots firm. For
returning moisture fine saw-dust has been
used with good effect. Alter transplanting,
trees are often subjected to too mu«h
watering. Moderate watering is neces
sary, but judgment should be exercised,
or the very means taken to make the tree
live may produce tbe opposito effect.
Mulching has also been found to be of
great benefit to newly planted trees. A
gentleman who has tried its effect says that
at the end of the second year he found that
tboße trees which were mulohed when
planted were 50 per cent, larger nd more
thrifty than those which wore not.
Mr. Meehan, toe agricultural editor of
the Philadelphia Press, gives the follow
ing advice on planting fruit treos in the
Full:
It is not generally know.- tnat the best
time to plant fruit trees is just before the
falling of the leal. Many peop e imagine
that a tree must not bo touched at all until
it has bed every leaf, and got every twig,
as it is said, ripe. But tho tree is usually
ripb for removal in this region at least by
the middle cfSeptember, and it is only a
question of heat or drouth how soon after
that it is safe io commence transplant
ing.
Iho great advantage of fall over Spring
planting is in this, that a few roots push
cut after setting out, ana as these store up
moisture all Winter, it is in better condi
tion to make a vigorous growth than if
left till Spring; but if the planting is left
until December, this advantage is 10-t. In
fact, ii is not Fall but Winter planting.
No new rootlets are produced at that late
period; and while some evaporation goes
on all Winter from the branches, the roots
are iu no condition to supply the waste.
Our advice, ihen, is, to plant where
possible up to December 1; but if not con
venient before that lime, it is better to
deter planting till Spriug.
Tnere is another waiter worth noting,
as u affects ihe success of planting. We
have said there is au evaporation going on
from the branches, winch moisture the
roots have to supply. Iu transplanting,
no matter how carefully the roots are re
moved, some will get injured; henoe it is
be« to cut away some of the branches
and ring the operation, as this lessens by so
much the demand for moisture on the
roots. Lu proportion to the apparent in
jury to the roots should the tops be cut.
Nurserymen understand this so well that
they seldom have trees to die on their
hands. If anything comes to them with
bad roots, they of course say it is a disgrace
to the sender to ship thorn such stuff,
and complain accordingly; but |they never
lose them, as they prune them more severe
ly than they would do if all their roots
wore whole. There is another matter
bean g on the same subject, which has
much to do with successful treeplanting.
This is setting the soil firmly about the
roots- The rootlets have to absorb moist
ure from the soil, and they can on y do this
when t hey aro in actual contact with them.
Too often iu planting, tough sods or lumps
are left, which leave large cavities, from
which the roots can draw no support. In
our planting we have men to ram
in the soil with paviug rammers as fast as
wo throw it in. It does not seem to i'jure
the roots in the least—it gives them a
chance to draw in.moisturefor the plant’s
sustenance at once, and makes a tight,
firm job. Such trees seldom blow over.

I Air Link Railroad.—We learn from
; one of the engineers on the Air Line Rail
road that the track has been laid as far as
Peachtree creek, aDd that construction
trains arc running on that portion of the
road. The piers for the bridge over the

bers arc at the junction ready to be put
together as soon as they are carried to the
spot This bridge will be completed in
about ten days, and by that time the bal
ance of the twenty miles will be ready for
the track, which will be rapidly laid. As
many hands are employed on this part of
the road as can be advantageously handled.

A KESV invention of power whereby all friction is overcome. The simplicity, economy and durability of this Press astonishes
all who see it, and the more so, a power so simple should so long have been unappropriated. The strain is wholly upon
two Cl) Iron Bars 13-4 inches square, operating on these bars as if two men were pulling at each end in contrary direction, which will
sustain a strain of 190,000 pounds each. With this Press two men can do all the packing or pressing of a 500 pound bale' inside of S
minutes, and it need be, one man cau operate, only requiring moretiuie. This Press will not occupy more space than a Piano, and
can be placed under the Gm and receive the Cotton direct from the (iin, thus doing away with Lint Room.-, and can be readily
taken down and transported, as it is simple and light. We can supply these Presses cheaper than any yet offered. Will send cir
cu™s to any desiring, and would advise all wanting Presses to withhold buying until they examine this.
These Presses are now beiDg manufactured in Atlanta, and will soon be set up on exhibition there, in Macon Augusta and all
important points throughout the State, where its workings can be seen.
All are assured that as between this Press and any other there is no argument as to its merits over ail others.
With the Irons, any ordinary w.orkman can put up the Press.
