ON LOW NRIRITS.-f.ow spirits is a cer
tain state ofllie mind, accompanied by nidi
tjotlion, wherein tho greatest evils are apprelionded
'upon the slightest grounds, mid tho worst cruise,

supposed this disease to he confined to those par
ticular regions ot the abdomen, technically callud
Lvpocliundrin, which arc situated on the right or
left side nf that cavity, whence comes the inline
hypochondriasis.
Sym/itoms. —The common corporeal symptoms
are, (lalulciicy in the stomach nr bowels, acrid

ness, dimnss ol sight, palpitations, mid alien an
utter inability affixing the intention upon any sub

mind becomes irritable, thoughtful, desponding,
melancholy, mid dejected, accompanied with n toml

imagination and overwhelm the judgement, exhibit
an infinite diversity. The wisest and best ot men

Cause*.—A sedentary lifuol any kind, especially
severe study, protracted to a late hour in the night,
and rarely relieved by social intercourse, or i xercise,
a dissolute habit, great excess in eating and drink
ing, the immoderate use ul mercury, violent purga
tives, the suppression of some habitual discharge,
(as, the obstruction of the menses,) or long contin
ued eruption ; relaxation or debility of one or more
mpurinnt organs within the abdomen, is a frequent
cause.
Treatment,— The principal objects of treatment
arc, to remove indigestion,to strengthen the body,
and to enliven the spirits, which may ho promoted
by exercise, early hours, regular meals, and pleas
ant conversation. Tho bowels (if costive) being
carefully regulated by the ore simial use of a mild
