port of a committee of the House of Represents

that the general use ol the patent lever cotton press
will he highly beneficial to the cotton planing in

! notion press in compressing a hale of cotton from
the size of 37 inches in the size of 2l> inches, and do
with pleasure state, that I believe it a cheap and
durable machine for par king or compressing cotton.

nossed the operation of the lever press lately put up
in this place by 11. VV January, Esq. Ibr I he purpose
of compressing cotton, 1 have great pleasure in say
ing that J was fully satisfied of its efficacy, and
would earnestly recommend it to the notice ol
planters who arc wauling presses at their gins fur
packing cut tun.

the undersigned, having examined the patent lever
coinprc.sa ol .Mr. January, und seen it in opera'ion,
are perli'ctly satisfied that when the inaclniiory is
properly adjusted it will not rerjuiro more than the
power of two men to compress a bale of cotton;
leaving it as small in dimensions ns that from the
usual screw press. Wo would cordially recoin
mend it to oil, and more particularly to those deter
mined upon erecting a compressing machine, as
being prolerable on many accounts, and certainly
two of the greatest important e, viz; expense and
power,

January—dear sir; 1 as an unmioroslcd person,have
witnessed, while the ship A/dtttpulier, ol which 1
have the command, was lying at the cotton press
landing, the power of your compressed lover press,
and can attest it has reduced one of my largest hales
ol the lot of cotton marked “Elms Chill's,” ns small
ns any that I have ever had trom the steam press ol
the same size; and it is my opinion that your press
can reduce cotton hales into as small a compass as
any steam press, ns I was convinced from the trial
made wills tho cotton hale above referred to. 1
was mao of the three individuals that compressed
said bale.
To all Planters in want of presses, v. bo make large
crops of cotton, which they tiro in the Imbit of
shipping to Europe,const wise, 1 would unhesila
' singly recommend the adoption of this press, its it
would enable ilium to have their cotton earned at
’ less rates of freight, and the compression can be
’ dune by their own plantations while ginning.
