Vr cliilf" Auli-Itilious Pills.
“ Health, wealth and enjoyment are llio three
prime ejects ol life. The two former are
only sought as a incurs to obtain the latrir.—
Man seeks lor wealth u.s the moans of enjoyment.
Dnl vain is such pursuit without the possession of
health. Without bodily strength and vigor, neither
the physical nor the mental —neither the inner nor
the outward man is capable ol any achievement,
whether ol wealth or eniot moni. Mens sana in
cotpure sano —a sound mind in a sound body—is
. the sine qua non—the absolute requisite, ibr.auy efli
cienl olfort in (ho attainment of human ends. The
i mind may he active, hut if the body be feeble, then
is the mind active to little purpose. Enjoyment is
not there; umi the finest laid plans tire rendered
abortive by the shattered condition of our tenement
; of (day.
Bat say that a man could obtain wealth—that he
could acquire I ho gold of Ophir, and bring home nil
' the treasures of the mines of Oolcomla, yet without
: health, whore would lie his happiness ! He would
’ be miserable in the midst of Ills gold and his dia
’ mends; he would pine away In wretchedness and
1 despair, and ho would exclaim with the wise man
> of old, “ all is vanity and vexation of spirit.” ilis

world —if he had it—lor the poor hut hoahhy man’s
| appetite.
*• Biease give me,” said a hungry wretch to a
I. wealthy feeble man, “ please give me a sixpence to
1 buy me a morsel of food; I am almost starved !"
“I would give a thousand dollars for your appe
tite,” said the rich man, as lie handed the hungry
one a dollar.
Os so much importance is health to the onjoy
' meat of life!
But whereto, method,s I hear the reader ask,sub
servos lids homily on so plain and hackneyed a sub
-1 jocl / Do wo not all know the value ol health ?
Do we nut all attend to it as one of the chief, if not
■ thochicfcst concerns of our mortal existence ? Do
wo not employ the means to attain and preserve it?
, Do wo nut lay cut money—d iwe not 100 physi
cians—do wo not follow their advice—do we not
swallow their prescriptions ?
True —most true—gentle reader, thou doost all
things, w 0 dare say, and more. Still, wo cannot
believe our homily on health to lie altogether tmiic
ceHsary. vis in morals, so in physic is it requisite
to have “ line upon line, and precept upon precept.”
ftli’ii in health forget that they* may lie sick, and
men in sickness do not always employ the most ju
dicious means to attain health.
Very true, Doctor—nu ndo not as you say always
pursue the right road to health. Now, J know of
soma people who are always dosing themselves
with physic, ana running to the doctors and apoth
ecaries every day of their lives. They take, 1 verily
believe, a cart load of drugs in a year, uud yet they
are nut well after all
Do you know the reason ?
Why, yes, in my opinion there are two reasons,
hi Iho first place they lake toe much medicine, and
in the second, they do not tako the right kind. 1
used to make the same mistake. Hut lately, that is
1 to say for two or three years past, I’ve hit upon a
holler plan. 1 take Dr. Deters’ Vegetable Bilious
Dills, and 1 derive more benefit from one dollar laid
oul in them, limn f used in paying fifty in any for
mer pursuit of health, besides saving a world of
nausea and disgust in swallowing an enormous
quantity of medicines. Do you know Dr. Deters ?
Very well.
Ami have you ever taken his medicine ?
I were a blockhead else.

You are rightly informed. Dr. Peters is no em

understand. He was regularly bred to tbc healing
art. He Ims spent years in the acquisition of knovv

Ho does not put lurlli the absurd claims often ad

scription ! Such a pretence ho w ould deem about
as difficult to swallow as to tako tho nostrums of
those who put it forth. There is no such medicine.
There is not, and never was, a panacea lor all dis
eases The Vegetable Bilious Pills protend to no
i such miracle. But w hat is infinitely better I hey
j effect what they undertake They keep tho word
of pr imise to the stomach, and the prima via which
j they make to tho ear and eye. And that indeed is
no slight recommendation. Nor are the complaints
