Deters, dm discoverer of the celebrated Vegetable Anli-ltilions Hills, f “Jlcalth, wcullh uml cnjoymont nro dio three r (•rimu ejects of life. The two former are . only Nought ns a means to obtain Iho latter.— . Man seeks for wealth us the moans of enjoyment. But vain is such pursuit without the possession of health. Without bodily strength and vigor, neither the physical nor the mental—neither Iho inner nor the outward man is capable of any achievement, I whether of wealth or enjoyment. Mens sana in eel pi ire nano—a sound mind in a sound hody—is ~ the sine ijiiu non—the absolute requisite, forjany clli - cicnl effort in the attainment of human ends. Tito n mind may he active, hut if the hody lie feeble, then ,1 is the mind active to little purpose, Knjoyment is not there; and dm finest laid plans are rendered ’ abortive by the shuttered condition of our tenement of elay. lint say that a man could obtain wealth—that ho Could acquire the gold of Ojihir, and bring home all '■ the treasures of the mines of Holeonda, yet w ithout * health, where would he his happiness ? He would l , be miserable in the midst of his gold mid his (lia * monds; he would pine away in w retched ness and s , despair, and lie would exclaim with the wise man * of old, “ all is vanity and vexation of spirit.” His ■ limbs are racked with pain and ke cannot rest, Ins appetite is gone, and be loathes his food; Ins sto -8 mnc.h is oppressed with nausea, and ho turns sick -1 ening away at the bounties of a munificent provi dence. He would give all he is Worth—nay, all the - world—if ho hud it—for the poor but healthy mutt’s * apjietile. “ I'leusc give mo," said a hungry wretch to a wealthy feeble man, “ please give mo a sixpence to buy me a morsel of food; I uni almost starved !” “ I would give a thousand dollars for your appn i tile,” said the rich man, us be bunded the hungry i one a dollar. Os so iimeli importance is health to the enjoy s inont of life! i But whereto, metbinks 1 hear the reader ask,sub ; serves ibis homily on so plain and hackneyed a sub ject? Ho wo not all know the value ol health? Ho we not all attend to it as one of the chief, if not the cbiefosl concerns of onr mortal existence ? Ho we not employ the means to attain and preserve it ? Ho wo not lay out money—do we not fee pliysi eians—do we not follow their advice—do we not sw allow their prescriptions ? True—most true—gentle reader, limit doost all things, we dure say, and more. Mill, we cannot believe onr homily on health to he altogether unne cessary. As in murals, so in physio is it requisite to have “ line upon line, and precept upon precept.” Men in health forgot that they may ho sick , and men in sickness do not always employ the must ju dicious means to attain health. Very true, Doctor—nun do nut as you say always pursue the right road to health. Now, I know of some people who arc always dosing themselves with physic, unit miming to the doctors and apoth ecaries every day of their lives. They take, 1 verily believe, a carl loud of drugs in a year, and yet they are not well alkr all Ho you know the reason ? Why, yes, in my opinion there tire two reasons. In the first pmeo they lake too much medicine, and 1 in the second, they do not tako the right kind. I 1 used to make the same mistake. But lately, that is to say for two or throe years past, I’ve Ini upon a better plan. I take Hr. Deters’ Vegetable Bilious Dills, and I derive more benefit from one dollar laid out in them, than 1 used in paying fifty in any tiir- 1 mer pursuit of health, besides saving a world of nausea and disgust in swallowing an enormous quantity of medicines. Ho you know Hr. Deters ? i Very well. i And have yon ever taken Ins medicine ? I were a blockhead else. i They tell mo he is none ol your quacks, who tin- i dortitkcs to mend and regulate the It.tutan machine I without so in ucli ns a knowledge ol its ports, t and how they are pul together. They say he un derstands anatomy and physiology, I think they call J them, and is as familiar with botany and chemistry as I am with the road to mill. . Von are rightly informed, Hr. Peters is no om ■pirie. He does not undertake what he does nut iiridorsUutd. He wos regularly Prod to the healing art. Ho has spent years in the acquisition of know- j ledge ;he has devoted housed'to the study of the human frame, and the diseases to which it is snh- , iect, and. now he la applying his acquisition to tho j 'relief Os suffering humanity. He does not put forth the absurd claims often ad vanced hy the inventors of patent nostrums—name ly, that of curing all diseases w ith a single pre scription I Mich a pretence lie would deem about as tiilUenll to sw allow ns to lake the nostrums of those who put it forth. There is no such medicine. There is nut, and never was, a panacea lor all dis eases Tho Vegetable Bilious Dills pretend to no such miracle. But what is infinitely better they elled what they undertake They kei p the word Ol pr uninc te the stomach, and the prima via which they make to iheeurand eye. And that indeed is no slight recommendation. Nor are tho complaints to which these Dills are adapted few nor tar be tween. The disorders nrising from a morbid stale of the bile are, unfortunately, many, distressing and fatal. A large portion id all the levers, especially til the south and in the marshy districts, are owing to tins can,so, from the distressing ague and lever, which almost shakes asunder hte and limb, to the fearlul “ \ cllew .lack,’ which seldom quits his vie nm w ithout sundering soul and body us he takes lus leave. Conversant from his previous practice, with din ! case, in all its tonus, w Inch originates from the dis order of the bile, Hr.
