Peters, the discoverer of the celebrated Vegetable Anti-liilious Pills. II Health, wealth and enjoyment are the three prime ejects ol life. The two former are only sought ns a means to obtain the latter.— Man seeks for wealth as the means of enjoyment. Hut vain is such pursuit without the poisession of health. Without bodily strength and vigor, neither the physical nor the menial—neither the inner nor Iho outward man is capable of any achievement, whether of wealth or enjoyment. Mens sana in co I pore sano —a sound mind in a sound body—is the sine qutfnon—the absolute requisite, forjony effi cient effort in the attainment of human ends. The mind may bo active, but if the body be feeble, then is the mind active to little jmrposo. Enjoyment is not there; and the finest laid (dans are rendered abortive by the shattered condition of our tenement of clay. But say that a man could obtain wealth—that he could acquire the gold of Ophir, and bring home all the treasures of the mines of Golchnda, yet without health, where would be lus happiness ? He would te miserable in the midst of his gold and his dia monds ; he would pine away in wretchedness and despair, and he would exclaim with the wise mans of old, “ all is vanity and vexation of spirit.” His limbs are racked with pain and he cannot rest, his appetite is gone, and he loathes his food; his «to- niach is opjiressed with nausea, and he turns sick ening away at the bounties of a munificent provi - dence. He would give all he is worth—nay, all the world —if be had it—(or the poor but healthy man’s appetite. “ Please give me,” said a hungry wretch to a wealthy feeble man, “ please give mo a sixpence to buy me a morsel of food; I am almost starved !” “ I would give a thousand dollars for your appe tite,” said the rich man, as he handed the hungry one a dollar. Os so much importance is health to the enjoy ment o( lile! Htrt whereto, melhinks I hear (ho reader ask, sub serves this homily on so plain arid hackneyed a sub ject? Do we not all know the value ol health? Do we not all attend to it aa 6nc of the chief, if nos. the chiefost concerns of our mortal existence ? Do we not employ the means to attain and preserve it ? Do we not lay cut money—do we not fee phyai oians—do we not follow their advice—do VVe nos swallow their prescriptions ? True—most true—gentle reader, thou doest all things, wo dare say, and more. Still, we cannot believe onr homily on health to be altogether unne cessary. As in morals, so in physic is it requisite to have “ line upon line, and precept upon precept." Men in health forget that they may he sick , and 1 men m sickness do not always employ the most ju dicious means to attain health. Very true, Doctor—men do not ns you say always pursue the right road to health. Mow, 1 know ol some people who are always dosing themselves with physic, ana running to the doctors and apoth ecaries every day of their lives. They take, 1 verily believe, a cart load of drugs in a year, and yet they aro not well after all Do you know the reason ? Why, yes, in my opinion there Orb two reasons- In the first ptace they lake too much medicine, and hi the second, they do not tako the ri ;ht kind. I used to make the same mistake. Hut lately, that is to say for two or three years jinst, I’ve hit upon a better jilan. I take Dr. Peters’ Vegetable Bilious Pills, and 1 derive more benefit from one dollar laid out in them, than 1 used in paying fifty in any for mer pursuit of health, besides saving a world of nausea and disgust in swallowing an enormous quantity of medicines. Do you know Dr. Peters ? Very well. And have you ever taken Ins medicine? 1 were a blockhead else. They tell me ho is none of your quacks, who un dertakes to mend nhd regulate the human machine without so much ns a knowledge ol its parts, and how they are put together. They say he un derstands anatomy and physiology, I think they cal? them, and is a* familiar with botany and chemistry as I am with the road to mill. You are rightly informed. Dr. Peters is no em pi tic. ito docs not undertake what he does not understand. Do was regularly (nod to the healing f art. (Ic has spent years in the acquisition of know ledge; he has devoted himseif to the study of the human frame, and the diseases to which it is sub ject, and now ho is applying his acquisition to the relief of suffering humanity. lledues nut put forth the absurd claims often ad vanced by the inventors of patent nostrums—name ly,that ol curing all discuses with a single pro scription I Buc.it a pretence he, would deem about os difficult to swallow as lo take the nostrums of those who put it forth. There is no such medicine. There is not, and never was, a panacea lor all dis eases . 'J’lte Vegetable Bilious Pills pretend to no such miracle. Hut what is infinitely heller they effect what they undertake They keep the word of pr nnise lo the stomach, and the prima via which they make to the ear and eye. And that indeed is no slight recommendation. Mor are the complaints to w hich these Pills are adapted tew nor fur be tween. The disorders arising from a morbid state of the bile are, unfortunately, many, distressing and fatal- A large jiortion of all the levers, especially at tite south and in the marshy districts, ate owing to this cause, from the distressing ague and fever, which almost shakes asunder lile and limb, to the fearful “ Yeffiw .lack,” which seldom quits his vie , tim without sundering soul and body as ho takes his leave. Conversant from his previous practice, with dm ease, in all its forms, w Inch originates from the dis order of the bile, Dr. Peters was first led to employ | his knowledge and experience in the preparation of a medicine which should prove ellicuciuus in this [ large class of diseases, which should relieve the ach |- ing and the dizzy head, and restore the nauseated and loathing stomach, at the some time that it pre vented those more fatal effects which arc so opt to 1 follow from their imprudent neglect. l-’or this purpose he prepared with much cure srd last adaption to the purpose, the Vegetable Bilious Pills, which he is happy to say, Iron; long experi ence, and the abundant testimony o) those whohai o employed them have answered, more than ..nswerei [ his sanguine expectations. It is nut his own mere assertion you are cail cd on to believe. It is not the ipse ctxit of any single man—though he was as great as Galen or Hippo crates —that yea aro to pin your iaith upon Noi- I liter —although it. is said in the sacred volume that i “by the mouth of two or three witnesses shall all things be established”—are you to believe in so small a number only ? A cloud of witnesses is be i lore you. They are too numerous to bee-sily overlooked; they are too intelligent to be carelessly heard; they are 100 respectable to be slight.) re garded. i Believing the spontaneous testimony of tboso whose experience is the best test of the truth they —j assert. Dr. Peters has thrown together in the tol low ing pages, a lew of the many' hundreds ol testi monials received from every quarter where his pills have come into use. They are left to speak lor themselves. They are the words ol those who ' “speak what they do know, and tes ify to what , they have seen and experienced.” Be careful and inquire for Peters’ Vegetable Pills; they are sold in Augusta by //avtland, Kit ley & Co Thomas Burned & Co, Afolson Carter, and James Leverich apnl 17
