The luliowing is an extract Irom u torthcotning
work of Ur. Peters, tho discoverer of the celebrated
Vegetable Anti-Hilions Pills.
“Health, wealth and enjoyment are the three
prime ejects ol life. The two former are
only sought us a means to obtain tho latter.—
Man seeks for wealth ns the means of enjoyment.
Hut vain is such pursuit without tho possession of
health. Without bodily strength and vigor, neither
tho physical nor the mental—neither the inner nor
the outward man is capable oi any achievement,
whether of wealth or enjoy merit. Wens sana in
eoiporesnno—a sound mind in a sound body—is
the sine qua non—the absolute requisite, for|any effi
cient effort in the attainment of human ends. The
mind may be active, but if tho body bo feeble, then
is the mind active to little purpose. Enjoyment is
not there ; and the finest laid plans arc rendered
abortive by tho shattered condition of our tenement
of clay.
Hut say that a man ceuld obtain wealth—that he
could acquire the gold of Ophir, and bring home all
the treasures of the mines of Golconda, yet without
health, where w ould be his happiness ? He would
bo miserable hi the midst of his gold and his dia
monds; ho would pine away in wretchedness and
despair, and lie would exclaim with the wise man
of old, “ all is vanity and vexation of spirit.” His
limbs aro racked with pain and l>.o cannot rest, his
appetite is gons, and lie loathes his food; his sto
mach is oppressed with nausea, and he turns sick
ening away at the bounties of a munificent provi
dence. He would give all he is worth—nay, all the
world—if he had it—fur the poor but healthy man’»
appetite.
“ Please give me,” said a hungry wretch to a
wealthy feeble man, “ please give me a sixpence to
buy me a morsel of food; I am almost starved 1”
“ I would give a thousand dollars for your appe
tite,” said the rich man, as ho handed the hungry
one a dollar.
Os so much importance is health to the enjoy
ment ol lilc!
Hut whereto, mothinks 1 hear tho reader ask, sub;
serves this homily on so plain and hackneyed a sd!/-
jeet? Uo we not all know the value ol health?
Uo wo not all attend to it as one of the chief, if not
the chiefeat concerns of our mortal existence ? Uo
we not employ the means to attain and preserve it?
Uo wo not lay cut money— do we not fee pbysn
cians—do we not follow their advice —do we not
swallow their prescriptions ?
True—most true—gentle reader, thou doest all
things, wo dare say, and more. Still, we oannot
believe our homily on health to he altogether unne
cessary. As iu morals, so in physic is it requisite
to have “ line upon line, and precept upon precept.”
Men in health forget that they may lie sick , and
>pon m sickness dn not always employ tho most ju
dicious means to attain ticaini.
Very true, Uoelor—men do not as you say always
pursue the right road to health. Now, I know of
some people who are always dosing themselves
with physic, ana running to the doctors and ajiolh
ecarics every day of their lives. They take, 1 verily
believe, a cart load of drugs in a year, and yet they
pro not well aftrr all
Uo you know the reason ?
Why, yes, in ray rpimun there are two reasons
In the first place they take too much medicine, and
hi tlie second, they do not tuko the right kind. 1
used to make the same mistake. Hut lately, that in
to say for two or three years past. I’ve hit upon U
better plan. I take Ur. Peters’ Vegetable Bilious,
Pills, and I derive mere benefit from one dollar laid
out in them, than 1 used in paying fifty in any for
mer pursuit of health, besides saving a world of
nausea and disgust in swallowing an enormous
quantity of medicines. Uo you know Ur. Peters ?
Very well.
And have yn.j evcr j u ] [en j ll3 medicine?
i acre a blockhead else.
I boy tell me ho is nunc of your quacks, who un
dertakes to mend and regulate tho human machine
without so much as a knowledge ol its parts,
and how they arc pul together. They say ho un
derstands anatomy and physiology, 1 think ihey call
them, and is as familiar with botany and chemistry
us I mn with the road to mill.
You aro rightly informed. Ur. Peters is no em
piric. He dors not undertake what he does not
understand, ilo was regularly tired to the healing
art. He bus spent years in the acquisition of know
ledge ; ho has devoted himsc.ftu the study of the
human Irame, and the diseases to which it is sub
ject, and now ho is applying his acquisition to the
relief of suffering humanity.
He does not put fbrlli the absurd claims often ad
vanced by the inventors of patent nostrums—name •
ly, that of curing all diseases with a single'pre
scription ! Such a pretence ho would deem about
as difficult to sw allow as to take the nostrums of
those who put it forth. There is no such medicine.
There is not, and never was, a panacea for nil dis
eases '1 ho Vegetable Bilious Pills pretend to no
■nchmiracle. But what is infinitely belter they
client what they undertake They keep the word
of pr anise to the stomach, and the prima via which
they make to the ear and eye. And that .indeed is
no slight recommendation, N'or are the complaints
to which these Pills arc adapted few nor far be
tween. The disorders arising from a morbid state
of tho bile arc, unfortunately, many, distressing and
fatal. A large portion of all tho levers, especially
at the south and in the marshy districts, arc owing
to this cause, from the distressing ague and lever
which almost shakes asunder hie and limb, to the
fearful “ Vellew Jack,” which seldom quits hisjvic
lim without sundering soul and body us he takes
his leave.
Conversant from his previous practice, with dis
case,iu all its forms, which originates from the dis
order of tho bile, Ur. Peters was first led to employ
■ his knowledge and experience iu the prejiaralion of
a medicine which should prove efficacious in this
largo class of diseases, w hich should relieve the aeh
ing and the dizzy head, and restore the nauseated
and loathing stomach, at the same lime that it pro
vented those more fatal effects which are so apt to
follow from their imprudent neglect.
l or this purpose he prepared with much care and
ins' adaption to the purpose, the Vegetable Bilious
Pills, which he is happy to say, (ion; long experi
euce, and the abundant testimony oi i hose who have
employed them have answered, more Ilian answered
his sanguine expectations.
It is not his own mere assertion you are call
ed on to believe. Jt is not the ijised exit ofany single
imm—though he was as great as Ualen or Hippo
crates —that yon are to pin your faith upon Not
flier although it is said in the sacred volume that.
“ hy the mouth of two or three witnesses shall all
things be established”—arc you to believe in so
small a number only ? A cloud of witnesses is be
fore you. They arc too numerous to be easily
overlooked; they are too intelligent to be cureless!'.'
heard; they are too respectable to bo slightly re
garded.
Believing the spontaneous testimony of those
whose experience is the best lest of the truth they
assort. Ur. Peters has thrown together in tho fol
lowing pages, u few of the many hundreds of testi
monials received from every quarter where his
pills haw eome into use. They are left to sp'ak
ter themselves. 'They are the words of those who
“speak what they do know, and tes ify to what
they have seen and experienced.”
He careful and inquire for Peters’ Vegetable
Pills, they are sold in Augusta by 7/aviland, Ki---
