CHRONICLE AND SENTINEL.
A U GUSTA.
TUESDAY MORNING, MAY 14.
From our Correspondent.
Milledgevillk, 11th May 1839.
The Convention met this afternoon at 3 o’clock.
The report of the Committee of 30 being under
consideration, Judge Berrien addressed the house
in a lengthy speech in favor of the plea of having
nothing but territory represented in the Senate.
His speech was characterized by great ingenuity
and ability in making “the worse appear the bet
ter cause.” He was followed by Col. Jones of
Muscogee, in favor of the other side. Though far
from being the accomplished speaker that Judge
Berrien is, he certainly answered many of the
main arguments of that gentleman with great
power and successfully. Mr. Jenkins also replied
to Messrs. Berrien and Wagner, in a triumphant
and conclusive speech.
The Convention then adjourned till 9 o’clock
Monday morning.
I send you the opening speeches of this debate,
which were generally short. Os course Ido not
pretend to give the language of each speaker; all
I aim at is to give the substance of their argu
ments, and as far as possible u moderate portion of
the language used in conveying those arguments.
Several of the Speakers will appear much better
on paper than they did on the floor, while others >.
will softer by my imperfect attempts. I cannot '
expect to give the beautifully rounded periods,
and polished language of Berrien, or on the other
hand to follow those who cannot speak their
mothers tongue correctly. The letter will there
fore be under some obligations to mo for making
them onco in their lives, speak grammatically
while the former must pardon ray inability to do
any thing like justice to their efforts. I shall
continue to furnish those spccimensof the debate
as fast as I can write them out.
[The report of the debate by our Correspon
dent will be given to-morrow.]
The ship Robert Isaacs, owned by Mr. G. B.
Lamar and others, of Savannah, for the safety of
which serious apprehensions have been felt, has
we understand, reached Bermuda in distress, with
(be loss of her entire cargo, and being otherwise
seriously injured. Ihe particulars we arc unable
to give, not having seen the article from which
this intelligence is derived.
We had yesterday the pleasure of witnessing
a splendid specimen of cocoons, the product of
the present season, raised by Mrs. A. R. Latimer
of this city. The gross weight of the cocoons
was about 15 lbs. some of which were the product
ofthe White, others of the Black worm ; the for- j|
mer weighs about 22, the latter about 40 grains—
of uncommon size, and varying both in color andj*
beauty. We are gratified to sec the experi
ments in this newaiid interesting branch ofindus
try, thus actively engaging the attention of the
public—especially the ladies—and to learn that
while they neither “toil nor spin,” some portion of
that deiicate attention requisite to foster ami ma
ture these experiments—may be bestowed upon
those that both * toil and spin.” We have seen it
slated, and will here re[ eat it, for the cncoui
aging of others—that three ladies on Long Is
land, the past year, realised from the product of
woiras, fed by their own hands and nurtured by
