AUGUSTA MARKET.
Cotton. —Our market for this article remains
quite inanimate, the accounts received from Liver
pool to the Sth of May, has thrown quite a damper
upon the feelings of all our dealers; but specula
te*# still look for better accounts, trusting that the
present dullness of the Liverpool market, only arises
from the unsettled state of politics in Great Britain
and France The quantity olfering is quite small,
and the receipts very light.
Exchange. —Checks on New York are held at 2
per cent, premium ; on Charleston $ a 1 per cent.;
on Savannah at par; Darien Bank notes HI per cent,
discount.
/ft fre/g/i/s continue at old rates. The river is now
quite low.
New-Okleans, June 1.
Cotton. —Received since 2Sth ultimo 3,019 bales,
(making the total receipts if the week 9,509 bales;)
exported to Liverpool 3,997 do, New York 1,25 U
do, together 5,253 bales ; making a reduction in
stock of 2,234 bales, and leaving a balance on hand
of 85.042 bales, including ail on ship board not
cleared to date.
The fair demand for cotton, which wc noticed as
existing at the date of our previous review of the
market, has continued up to the present time. The
transactions, which amount to about 8,000 bales,
have been chiefly in Louisiana and Mississippi
cottons, and the stock of these descriptions, conse
quently, has now become very light, in regard to
prices, there is no change that we can quote, though
we may observe that the sales were at very full
rates, and that holders appear remarkably firm.
Aside from some direct shipments on planters ac
count, there has been but little business doing in
North Alabama cotton and the stock on sale,
therefore, continues to increase—we particularly
notice the following sales, viz : 157 bales Louisi
ana and Mississippi, at 14; 29, 15; 250, 13$ a 14$;

North Alabama at 14 cents; 21 Tennessee at

Sugar. — Louisiana. —Our quotations fur sugar
in the city remain the same as previously, inferior
to common 4 to ss, fair to prime 6 a 6$ cents. The
market during the last three days has been in a very
inanimate state, a few unimportant transactions in
prime, which description continues very scarce,
constituting about all the business done. The
stock in store of the inferior to common qualities is
large, and constantly increasing. On plantation
we have again to report the de nandas very limited
—there is not much going west, and only a few
vessels are loading for the northern markets. Ha
vana sugars. —Some demand exists for brown,
which is scarce, but white is both abundant and
dull.—Brices continue the same. Arrived since
28tb ult., of Louisiana 544 hlids ; cleared for New
York 475 hlid :
; Molasses. —Wc have beard of a few small sales
on plantation since our last at 25 cents per gallon.
In the city, the demand has rather subsided, and
there is more offering than there was previously.

Liverpool May 16.
Cotton. —Nothing of interest has occurred in the
market since Tuesday ; the demand continues li
mited, but there is no change of moment in prices.
The sales on Tuesday were about 500 bags only ■
Wednesday, from 1500 to 2,000 bags; and to-d:iv
2500 bags, principally in small quantities to the
trade, [’lie arrivals since Tuesday are two vessels
from New York,twoMobilc,two Charleston, and

Havre, May 15.
Cotton. —The advices brought by the Great West
ern Irom the United States, have produced an un
favorable effect on our market, and render import
ers still more anxious to realize, so that we have
to record a further fall of 2 a 3 centimes on Ameri
can descriptions, and particularly on American
grade, and purchases to any extent could no doubt
be made on still easier terms. The reports as to
short crops in the United States produce no favora
ble effect, now that our stock with the coming car
goes will be a sufficient supply for the coming sea
son, and the question rests consequently wholly on
the degree of consumption, and as the accounts
from the manufacturing districts continue more and
more desponding ; it becomes evident that a crisis
is approaching in commercial affairs. The sales 5f
the week have amounted to 1889 bales, including
of American, 4SI bales New Orleans, at 941 a 122 f
4SI Mobile at 98f. 50 a 114., and 160 Upland at
