PRESENTMENTS.
Lincoln Superior Court, April Venn , 1SJ!).
■ Georgia, Lincoln County,
Tlie Grand Jurors, sworn and cmpannelled as
the Grand inquest of said county and state, fur the
present term, make the following presentments.
And in doing so, they feel gratified to slate that
they have no presentments lo make of a general
character, as outrageous upon the moral commu
nity.
The Grand Jurors, in the performance of this
duty, under the special charge of las Honor, have
made examination of the records ol the eouils, and
lind them in good order, and the proceedings ol the
courts regularly re orded. In respect to the other
charges lioin ms Honor, nothing comes within the
knowledge ol this body that they ran present as a
grievance.
Ihe Grand Jury, will, as a body, recommend the I
strict observance ol the law, regulating retail
licenses, passed at the last session of the Gegisla- (
turn, which law, enforced, v»iD pul a slop to a ;
traffic with slaves iu. indent spirits, which has been
for years csource of complaint, and accumulation
of much vice underline within Inc stale.
They would recommend lo Hie Inferior Court of
the County, to have such repairs made as may be
necessary to the several miugos m the county, and
when required, lo have now ones uuill; and we
point out lo them those across Main Soap I reek
and Hie Dry fork of Soap Creek as wauling re
pairs.
The Grand Jurors have been unable to examine
fully, the situation of Ihr funds ol the county, the
clerk having been undei a press during the term in
hm official duty, they recommend Inal he be pie
pared lo lay betore the Inferior Court the slate of
llic funds, and that the same ne laid before the next
Grand Jury foi then approval.
The Grand Jury would present as a serious grie
vance, the defect moor criminal laws, which Mill
not permit ullences lo be tried in any counts than
where they arc committed —it lias come to tlu>,
that the mare UagraiU the crime, the more certainty
there i< that the perpetrator will escape justice.
The transgtessor and Ins triemls have on.y to
agitate the ease in at 1 companies, and thus draw out
that expression of opinion which is so natural in a
virtuous community, where the laws have been
shameluily \ mlalcd, and thus under the two oaths
that arc prescribed by the code to Jiuors, every
citizen in toe county, especially the most meritori
ous ami enlightened, are rendered incompetent to
serve. This a crying evil, and we would recom
mend to our Donators an , Representatives in the
next Legislature, to bring tins matter before the
assembly, and lo endeavor lo procure such an alter
ation in the existing laws, as will insure the speedy
administration ol justice.
The Grand Jurors in closing their presentments
through their foreman, present to Ins Honor, Gar
nett Andrews, their thanks for Ins attention to
tham as a body, and lor his attention to business in
the discharge of his official duties, which has been
faithfully and impartially performed. And to I
S. Heath, Esq , Solicitor General, they present
their thanks for Ins faithful discharge of his duties.
We further recommend that the clerk have these

The following was forwarded to Dr. Peters, by a
highly respectable Planter of Wake County, No
1 Ca , March 3d, 1838:
I 'r. Peters —Dear Sir, —By request of your agent,
Mr. Harrison, 1 send you a few lines respecting the
almost miraculous effects of your pil's; and 1 would
add, that you may make use ol them, in connection
with my name, in any manner you deem proper, I
speak of their merits from experience,as 1 and my
family have taken upwards of thirty boxes in three
years; and so great are the benefits we have receiv
ed from them in general, that I would rather pur
chase them at ten dollars a box than have rny house
without them. 1 will not enumerate the afflictions
they have relieved us of; but 1 can assure you they
were many, and of very opposite natures, which
has fully proved to me that your medicine is a sim
ple purifier of the system, and therefore equally
the enemy of every disease. I will mention one
case. 1 have a sister who had been for a long pc
i riod severely afflicted with dropsy in the chest and
was brought by it to the very verge of the graie.
She was attended by the most eminent physicians
that money could procure ; but all their efforts to
restore her to health, or even to mitigate her suffer
ings were fruitless ; and accordingly, we all consid
ered her immediate death as inevitable. Jiy good
fortune, however, as she was in this situation, ex
pecting every day to be her last, your pills were
introduced into my family, and so speedy and pal
pable were their clfeots that three doses visibly re
lieved her, and in lesrs than three months she was
perfectly restored to health. This case, 1 and all
who were witness of it, (but more especially the
suffering party,) considered to be the next thing to
miraculous ; and yet 1 could mention many more
of an equally desperate nature, in which your pills
were equally successful in rescuing the patients
from the jaws of death. Need 1 add that the popu
larity of your medicine amounts to enthusiasm in
this section of the country ? Hut this I presume
you know from the immense quantity you dispose
of 1 may mention, however, that notwithstanding
its general use, I never heard an individual complain
of its effects. My residence is 12 miles from Kal
eigh, on the road to Fayetteville. I am, with sen
timents of regard, your ob’t servant.
A. G. BANKS.
To Dr. Peters, —Sir —For upwards of fifteen
months, I have been cruelly afflicted with Fever
and Ague; and during the time could find nothing —
though I had applied to every thing that gave me
any thing like permanent relief. At length, how
ever, your pills were recommended to me, by one
of our best physicians, and 1 am most grateful and
happy in being able to add that 1 had scarcely used
two boxes when 1 found that they had restored me
to perfect health. Since then, various members of
my family have used them with equal success—
and consequently 1 feel it my duty to apprise you
of the fact, and to request of you to publish this
certificate, as 1 am anxious to add my public testi
mony to the almost miraculous virtues of your un
rivalled medicine. Respectfully vours,
THEODORE JAMES.

Dr. J. P. Peters —My Dear Sir—On the night of

house of a fel ow ci.izcn, (Mr. Lee,) where I found
his son laboring under a most alarming attack of
Cynanche JTacnealis (Croup) and apparently be
yond the aid of remedy. By the greatest good for
tune, however, 1 had in my pocket a broken box of
your pills—four of which 1 adrninistcre , with
such immediate happy effect that in a few minutes
my patient was at ease, and out of danger. This
case,in connection with my name is at your ser
vice—and 1 have the pleasure to be able to inform
you that your inestimable medicine is in such great
} favor with the faculty here, that I believe there is
not one of them who does not use it in his private
practice. Yours most resp’y.
