To be putiliehed Monthly at Athene, Georgia,

BY the solicitation of several f.iends who feel
a deep interest in thesueces-of the Sill, bust
ness at the South, we have been induced to pto
posethc establishment of a sma I periodical mainly
devoted to that subject. 'J he experiment of rais
ing the food and tearing the worm in this climate
having been fairly tried, and that trial having ful y
demonstrated the feasibility of the undertaking,
pub ie attention is becoming every day more alive
to it; and fond anticipations ate already indulged
of lltc time when our abandoned and worn out plan ’
talions shall again he cultivated, and better than
ever reward the labor bestowed uj on them. ’Jo
bint who has a patriotic attachment for the - oil on
which he was born and nurtured, and who looks
upon the tide of emigration that is ever setlii. ■'
from lltc ok! to the new Status, as notonly a drain
upon our wealth, hut destructive to the delights oil
social intercourse and the growth of eary friend
ships, any scheme which shall t -nd to lessen such
emigration,. nd plant our people more contented v
and firmly amid the scenes of their childhood will
he favorably regarded. An Iwe are fully persua
ded that the production of silk, if generally enga
ged in, « ill do more than any thing else c n do, to
increase our wealth and preserve our population.
Kntertainmg these views, we propose to lend ouc
feeble aid in the dissemination of practical infor
mation on tliis subject, coiilldently believing that
an Intel igeul > ommimity need only have suitable
facts presented for their consideration, to satisfy
them that the road to wealth is as open to them
here, as in any of the fertile legions ot the West.
We arc aware that several va liable and ably
conducted publications exist at the North, devoted
to the intciestsoi the Silk Culture, and that wo
shall hiing but little practical Infoimation to the
task we have imposed upon ourself. Rut it,seems
to us that a work which should record the results
of Southern experience, which should contain in
formation mtopted to the peculiarities if our soil
and climate, and which should at the same time
include a selection from the most valuable articles
in the Northern periodicals, with an account of all
new improvements in the mode of constpuctipv
cocooneries, fixtures, reels, 4.e. in Furopc and
America, would he found eminently useful. With
these feelings wo commend our entcrpiise to the
patronage of the public, promising that no efforts
shall he spared on our part, to render it a walk
both interesting and useful.
It may be proper here to remark, that although
the silk culture is the primary object rye hope to.
aid, we design to introduce other articles connec
ted with Agr,culture generally, with a view to -I
disseminate such valuable information gsmay meet
the wants and advance the interests of pr-u.
farmers.
