shall bo fixed at One Hundred Dollars, and that the
President and Treasurer call in all the outstanding
certificates, and issue now certificates at the rale of

of Directors, Stockholders of the Steamboat Com

I Encouraged hy a belief, that the Southern |
Review, would receive a liberal patronage gener- ■
ally, and especially in the Southern anil (South
| Western States, the undersigned proposes to
j rcv ' vo B- under auspices which promise fully to
sustain the teputation, which the late Southern
i Review, during its brief existence, had earned.
It will be published in Washington, and edited
i hy a gentleman, whoso high character and su
| perior attainments, guarantee that, aided, as ho
will ho, by the ablest writers and statesmen of
the Union, the work will take rank at once among
the ablest and best periodicals of the age. °
Tlio condition of tile South, anil the crisis ’
produced by the Revolution in Texas demands 1
that there should be some abler and more authoi* 1
itative opponent of public opinion than the
newspaper press—that there should be some 1
acknowledged organ of Southern sentiment, ele
vated above ail the considerations of mere per
sonal ambition, in which patriots of every parly
may commune together, and labor for the preser
vation of the republic. 1
Some experience admonishes the undersigned,
that to obtain a subscription which will renin- '
nerate his own labor and expenditure, will rc- I
quire an active co-operation on the part of those f
who desire the accomplishment of this undeitak- !
ing, and with this view, it has been suggested 1
and he begs leave to urge upon ail such, ami
especially the young men, to organize commit- |
tees, and by subdividing their respective towns,
cities, counties and districts, apply to such indi- <
viduals as may lie induced to subscribe, upon ap- 6
plication. Many persons have expressed a will- 1
ingness to contribute a fund to he applied to- J
wards the Editor’s salary, and in payment for ,
communications. It is suggested that the sub- ,
scription of such, if any, should be taken and |
when paid, placed in the Bank of Charleston, to ’
bo applied to these objects by the President and ‘
Cashier of the Bank, and the publisher, as a com
mittee sot that purpose.
The Southern Review will be published quar
terly, will contain 275 to 300 pages, at five dol
lars per annum, payable in advance. Commit
tees or individuals obtaining subscribers, will 1
forward the names and subscription to Washing
ton. All contributions to the Editorial fund will (
be forwarelcd to the Cashier of tile Bank of 1
Charleston, and placed to the credit of the Edi
torial fund of tlie Southern Review. The fol
lowing form of a Subscription list, which may lie
cut out of a newspaper and pasted on the head
ol a blank sheet, is respectfully suggested.
