The Hen Sherrod, as we learn from the Nat

MON E V MARKET—CIT V.
Thursday, May 18. —We are still kept in hot
water hv the mad course of tho recusant Hanks.
They must know that the precious metals, by tho
inability of so many institutions to redeem their
paper in coin, have raised iu value, andl can no
longer servo the purposses of a current medium
while their place is occupied by paper money.
And yet they foolishly persist in attempting to
keep the two values convertible. When will our
financiers learn wisdom! Every hour that trails
pircs, leads us to believe that this city will suf
fer mote than any other in the Union, simply
ftotn the tigcr-like principle of some of our
Hanks. Several of them refuse to take cadi
ollur's paper, while others will resort to any
measure that will relieve tho community. This
is harsh language, but i; Is true. It is no lime to
be mincing matters. Facts should he laid before
the public, ami animadverted on freely and fully.
In the face of tho univsal ruin spreading over the
whole laud, we see tome eight or ten Hanks mad
ly endeavoring to redeem the demands against
them in specie. They do not even understand
tho first principles of Banking. Do they not see
that confidence, the key-slono of the Bank arch
bus fallen out?—Why then endeavor to sustain
a truclure that refuses to be sustained unless the
kov-aloiie ke applied!
T ie suspended Hanks ate wisely caution? in
