| Broad street confessedly is, there is nevertheless
j one thing at least w hich departs very much (rom its
I lirsuty, while it adds nothing In Us convenience.
| Wc allude t« the location of the pumps in the
{ middle of the street, and their present unsightly
| appearance, out of repair, enclosures decaying,
{ presenting to the eye of the observer a want of
cleanliness, and indicating litem to be any thing
else hut the reservoirs and fountains of pure and
wholesome water. Wc suggest to the City Coun

constructing new ones—removing them entirely
from their present locations, and 1 1 .cing them co c
to the side walks. Uy doing this, objects which
detract very much from the beauty of the street,
would he removed from situations In which they
attract mention, and at the same tunc the water
used hy our citizens from these pumps would he
very much improved hy (lie change us location.

that institution is determined to resume specie

any other I hat in current bunk notes. Mr Bid

out the hills us the old bank at a premium us 5 to
10 per cent This cotton, it Is believed by those
tonal familiar with the operation, will be laid

of dollars. The profit, howevvt, although great,
' nby no means as important a* the fact of placing
. this large anoutu in fund* in Lit.don, to meet
the post notes of tlie bank payable in that city.
It has been asserted by many that Mr. Biddle
bad placed the institution in a position where
they would have to sacrifice a vast amount to re
deem his post notes payable in England and on
’ the Continent. It appears, however, that Mr.
1 Biddle’s “Head," at least, is quite as long as those
who have chuckled a I tile at the prospect us bis

’ These institutions have done more, probably, to
bring about the present disastrous slate of things,
than any other. Bui to the facts—it is stated,
1 anil not contradicted, that Isaac Bronson received
. in payment of a ntor'g ge, SSOOO in Manila! an
I Bank paper. He called upon the cashier, staled
that he had received them in payment ofammi
g i >(', and requested the hank either to redeem their
hills in specie, or allow him intere-t on the
amount for them, five or ten years. They reties

course.
