I'rorn the Montreal Courier , t.Xtra of Saturday lust Alt KENT IN MONTREAL—AKKEST OF TWO PRISON EKB Alf REST ED AT ST. JOHNS. The events ol yesteiday and the day before, arc of a nature to require of us the fulfilment of our promise made at the beginning of ibis month ol an extra sheet, whenever news of particular interest was to be communicated. Wc were pre vented from publishing in our yesterday's paper, the eathcr part of th • narrative we now present, fry a special request, as by the fear of perhaps lin paring the success of the measures that we e in progress, by any 100 early publicity, such as we might then have given them. It was nut till shout 9 o’clock on Thursday evening, that they became known at all; and it was then consider ed best, that for a slum time (hey should remain a* little known as possible. On ihursday evening, a considerable number of warrants were lodged in the hands of the high constable, who succeeded, with a (tarty of special constables, in arresting six of the delinquents,— Messrs Andre Ouimet, President of the “Jlls de la liberie,’' J. Uubuc, employe d Pigeon's tavern, Finns. Tavernier, George Ed Uoucherville, advo cate, Dr. -inurd, and a stud nl at law, turned Leblanc.—Several other warrants were not serv ed, owing to the absence of the parties. Among the absentees, we understand, were Dr. O'Uullagltan, Thus, S. Drown, Kodulphe De.riviores, and Ovitlo Perrault. Tbe arrested panics were all safely lodged in gaol. A report lias been In circulation, that Mr. Desrivieres has since been arrested, hut up to last night nothing hail occurred to warrant it. Wc have not learned positively the precise na ture of these arresls. Public report declares them til he for high treason: and wo are nut aware that there i* any icason lo suppose it incorrect in this particular. Kl eight o'clock on the same evening, a party of 18 of the Royal Montreal Volunteer Cavalry, was despatched to Si. Johns, with Constable Main, to effect the arrest of Messrs. Dr. D’Avig non and Demaray. Having quietly effected their object they set out on their return, about 3 o'clock in the morning, by the same road. Nol far front Chatnbly, they met w ith a party of about 30 permits, variously armed, who, however, went oil'as they approached. At about a mile from Longucil, they were warned by a woman, that u large body of men was in waiting for them a little farther on; hut from some cause or other, the information was dis regarded, and the (tarty proceeded as before.— They had gone on but a very short distance, when they f und themselves almost close to a body of about 300, in a field on the tight of the road protected by a high fence, and armed with ttfies ami muskets. The (ratty in advance moved on to pas* them, but was received by a heavy lire, which it was impossible fur thorn to return with effect, armed as they were with pistols only, and from a body ' which on account of the high fence they could t nut charge sword in hand. Under these citcum > stances, they tell hack on the main Irmly of the par- I ty. though not until several shots had told with ! effect o|iitn litem. Several of the horses, we are told were more or ' less wounded. In turning lo retreat, the wagon in which the constables and the two prisoner s were was upset, and necessarily left behind by ,| )e 5 cavalry who then made their way into across the fields. On striving there, the- found a detachment of two companies from I|>.b 3td Regi - merit, under Msjor Read, who had been despatch . ed at an curly hour from Monl'oal, lo receive and f «up(a>rt lliPiu in case of necessity, but whoso or . ,I *' rs Bud unfortunately directed him not to pro 'ted beyond Lon-uil. *ne prisoners had, however, then made their I 1 escape, aud the whole body returned lollte city || lor farther orders. VVe understand that the four companies of the Royals now in town, have received orders lo march early this morning, under Lieutenant Col Wetherall, K. H., on special duty not yet pre ,f cutely dLclored, between Lungcuil and Chambly. , t They will he accompanied by one, or pet haps two, field pieces. '■ Conflicting reports arc current a* to the locale 'f of the unarreslcd leaders, and of Mr I’apmeau in y particular. By some it is confidently staled that he is in t twn, try others, that he has even left the country, and crossed the line. No stnnc must bo left unturned lo ensure the arrest of every man, against whom evidence can _ he found to wariutil a lair hope of his conviction. There is a little doubt expressed in some quar- l * tors as to the fact of a warrant being actually 't | out against I'apineau ; but we trust there is no if | ground for such a doubt, „ I The number of warrants prepared is, wc ho . i hove considerable, and some one of them must he *' | lot the head offender. The arrest of A. N. Mar ie j in in (Quebec, shows there is no intention of al io j lowing the leaders to leave all the dangers of tev- I olution lo their underlings. We have reason to ho(re that a considerable number of additional arrests are likely lo Ire made ■in ami near Quebec. Tbe more men the better l * —but the highest nm-t he among the first. The best argument we can urge upon our rea * dors lit induce them to renewed activity and spir it in their country’s cause, is lo lie found in the *' events of the lust day or two. The long desired lu Idow it at last struck by the government. Blond i has at last been shed by the rebels, w ho now stand unmasked, end faitly subject to the worst penal ■ ties of the laws they have insulted. B j No British subject could dsstre better things. ' c i Let hut the enemy lie seen, and the result is eer •’ tain.—Argument is no longer needed to con '■; vince any one of what each man’s conscience a must now plainly icll him lo Ire hit duty. He n > has hut to remember that England expects every ls man to do it. *’ We see from last night’s Papulahe, that Mr, I Demaray, an* of the parties rescued ct Longucil, »Ja*r jsl-i livVU ItaA.U (»••* •a»U4bl Ul » j ( »- -buster at .St J. In the present instance of Provided, ■ial affliction, it would be difficult to speak too extravagantly of the amiable and social qualities which adorned our departed friend. Wc might adopt tbe language of his venerable father, while beholding bis sou in the agonies of death, who said “no man bad a belter child, or one ot mote filial love and respect. ’ The deceased was dts linguisbed above most men, for amtableness ot disposition, and red Hide of principle.
