will continue throughout the week, A laige
number of fine horses have already arrived.

ther news of iotorcal in relation to the dilficulliea
in Canada. Wc do not understand what ia (ho
cause of thcie disturbances ; whether they spring
from a revolutionary spirit on the part of any
considerable portion of the people of that country,
with a view to throw off the government of Greo*
Uritain, or whether they are the ebullitions of
n few feverish and factious spirits. Tima will
show.
Vt'r shall commence in a day or two the inter
esting debate in the Slate Senate on the resolution
appropriating 30,000 dollars for the troops under
Col Nelson. In lha meantime it may ho proper
to remark that these troops have continued their
march to Florida and are piohaldy in that Terri
tory before this lime. Their number exclusive op
wagoners, a 1288; the number of horses including
wrjpona horses ebout 1600. It may ho asked
how such a body of men, without provisions and
money arc sustained in so long a march as that
to Florida! Wc propose, inasmuch as (his busi
ness has assumed tt character of vast importance
to review the whole matter to morrow; and cn

The new and elegant steam packet North Car
olina, recently built in New York and owned by
Commodore Vanderbuilt, will shortly lake her de
parture for Wilmington, N. C.
Dr. Carr Lane, Ihn Whig candidate, has been
elected the mayor of St. Louis, by a majority of
483.
The Woodworth benefit at lha Bowery, netted
him about #I2OO. A generous public have not
been appealed to in vain.

We understand that the Chamber of Com
merce of (ais city, at ita mee.ing last evening, re
solved that a communication should bo addressed
to the President of the United Zlatas, respectful
ly requesting that he would introduce to the no
tice of Congress, the subject of eslsblibing a I ne
of cruisers ad along the coast during the winter
season, for the purpose of protecting our com
merce against the possible depredations of pirates,
aa well as for the purpose of aiding vessels in
distress. The loss of life and properly, and the
sufferings which are experienced every winter ou
our inhospitable coast, call loudly for some meas
ures of this kind. In aomc cases the crews of
vessels are nearly all froat-hitten by exposure to
the cold, so that they are unable to work; and
many a disastrous wreck eould be prevented by
the timely aid of a few fresh bands. Wo leant
that a eo-lcmporanooua movement on this subject
has taken place io N. York, and wo trust that it
will ho followed by the commercial bodies of
Boston, Baltimore, and the other Atlantic cities.
At the booinning of the present yearlhu
effective naval force of the Pacha of Egypt
conaialed of "9 vessels of war, mounting
1428 gone, and manned by 14,610 men. Os
those vessels, 8 are ships ot the line, vi* —two

Loniion, Oct. 12. — City, 12 o’clock.—ahe
money market docs not appear to have been
much affected by the publication of the revenue
tables, hut the deficiency is large and must ren
der the fund holder necessarily anxioua as to the
future progiess of our commerce. It is said that
the returns issued yesterday are much less unia
vorabte than the tlhancellor of the Exchequer
had anticipated, and that he considers the present
diminution ut the public resources as one ol tem
porary existence merely, 'i’he October quarter
is usually less pioduclive than either ol lire other
throe, and the lorlunale termination of the harv
est is, moreover, a circumstance which, it must he
acknowledged, holds out the promise of some
improvement. It is, nevertheless, much to be
desired that our foreign trade should be pul upon
a heller ond a safer looting than al present. Our
commercial derangements with the United Stales
will not, wc are of opinion, ho of very long con
tinuance, hut while the present system ol inter
ference in the affairs of Spain and Portugal is
persevered in, there can be little prospect ol any
melioration as regards our relations with those
two countries. Tbe Chancellor is understood to
have prepared himself fut a defalcation of at
least halt a million mote than that which has oc
curred upon the quarter just ended.

Al one o'clock we received the Montreal He
rald of Tuesday. That paper states that an exten
sive search has been made foi Mr, Papineau, but
without succeeds —we did not know that a war

Malo, a constable, arrived in town yesterday,
accompanied by the blacksmith at Lunguil who
took oif the handcuffs from Mr. B’Avignun and
Mr. Demaray, the two prisoners who were rescu
ed, and also by two habitants, who, we under
stand, have made depositions before the attorney
general.
One habitants, has been found dead in the
thicket beyond Longucil, where the cavalry was
attacked on Thursday last. Two companies of the
32d regiment arc lo leave town this morning, in
order to meet the seven prisoners, who will bces
cericd from Chambly by two companies of the
Royals. A few of the individuals against whom
warrants are issued, have been seen skulking
about St. Antoine, Chambly, and other places
adjacent, attempting to stir up the habitants to
a la of violence.
On Sunday the congregation of the church at
St. Antoine was addressed by Mr. Cartier, a
young advocate of this city, who recommended
that a ••liberal regiment” should be immediately
formed, which he wunld lead to death or victory
in’itierndling to release his brave compatriots
from the gaol; but he mot with but little success,
as al the muster his regiment including himself,
numbered only four individuals.
The Populate mentions that Papineau left
|nwn on Friday last in company with O’Cnllaghan
and Ovide Perrtull, and crossed the river lo the
island of St. Thcrcse lo hold a conference with
Girod, who had left a short time previous for Va
rennes, but on their avrival there he was nut to
be found.
The three rebels then started for the United
States, culling on their friend Dr. Cole on their
way, to whom Papineau said, that he was about
toraiaoa force of twelve thousand men in the
States to aid the Cunadians-
It is reported in town that the following indi
diduals have expatriated themselves:—Mr. Duver
day, Wollred Nelson, F. Main of Pointeaux,
Trembles, Drolet of St. Marc, Dr. Dover! of Si.
Charles, Rodolphe Dcsivicrc- and Dr. II- Gauvin,
of this city.
Capl. McDonald, a magistrate for this district
on his way to this city on Friday evening last
was arrested by live men armed and accoutred,
who presented their guns to his breast. One of
them snapped his piece, the powder Hashed in
the pan, hut fortunately ihc go a did not go off.
Captain McDonald then asked the ruffians what
they wanlea lo do with him, when they replied
that he must go lo Dr Kimbor’a residence, to
which be was taken. The Dr. though engaged
in serving the patriots with amunition, had the
humanity to liberate Capt. McDonald and send
one of his men lo escort him to Bunkei’s hotel,
where he remained.
Lord Gosford has issued a militia general order,
declaring that all resignations extorted from offi
cers in the militia, by violence or threats, ate ac
counted null and void, and that the said officers
will mill be considered as holding tho same.
The commander of the forces has authorised
tho embodying of three volunteer corps indepen
dent of the ward organization, under the name of
I the Royal lii»h, Sjoivo ?"■' British Fusileers,
each vC.-"» to consist of one hundred men under
a captain and two lieutenants. A body of caval
ry under the name of the Queen’s Light Dra
goons, amounting to fifty men is also to be orga
nized.
It was currently reported at Montreal on Mon
day that the People’s Bank had slopped payment.
Its notes were refused in deposite at the Montre
al and North American Bunks.
The five persons arrested at Quebec, viz; Messrs
Morin, Legate, Chasseur, Trudeau and Lachance,
have been admitted lo bail—s2ooo each, with
two sureties in ihc same amount. They are to
appear for trial in March, and Is keep the peace in
the meantime.
