The Country Newspaper.
If you have anything to sell that
commands trade outside of your own
city, use the country newspaper.
In the country newspaper you
have a reliable and effectual friend
that does its mission at more family
firesides than do many of the metro¬
politan dailies.
In the country weeklies the marri-
l’iage bells toll more joyfully than in
the great city papers, and when the
columns of such a home pape tell us
that some humble person has gone
from the world we read with tears,
for lie was our neighbor and friend.
The country newspaper is not on¬
ly a business guide, but it is a pulpit
of morals for the entire community
and county in which it is published. where

Cicero Edwards never comes to
the A’ews without a good item.
Last week he droped in, and re-
maked, “I can beat you on that tale
about the shingles in Lawfenceville,
which stayed on a bouse thirty years.
That aiu’t nothin’. There is a
house over here two miles from town
that’s got shingles on it that have
been in constant use eighty years” -
How is that?
Why in 1811, my father built a
house and covered it with heart pme
shingles. They stayed on the roof un¬
til 1870, when the dwelling was torn
down, and a stable was built of the
logs, and it was covered with those
same shingles and they are on there
to-day, and don’t leak a drop!”
This Cicero said lie could prove
by a dozen good witnesses.
He says the shingles were round
cornered, and that while some of
them have water furrows in them >
they would make fat lightwood to
this day.—Ex.

Berry, of Union, Ohio, that is some¬
thing remarkable in the way of horse¬
flesh, The animal is five years old,
nineteen and three-fourths hands
high, and pulls the beam at 2690
pounds His hoof are eight inches fair in
diameter, which is only a pro¬
portion of his body. He is in fine
condition, and Mr. Abrams is taking
him to St, Joseph, where he will
be placed on exhibition, and only
stopped here to give the horse a lit¬
tle rest so his journey could be re¬
sumed. Mr. Abrams says he stop¬
ped at Cillicothe, Ill., and had his
shoes pulled off, and so great was
the curiosity that he sold the shoes
for one dollar each.-Richmond Dem¬

The August number of The Old
Homsstead contains the opening
chapters of “A Foolish Woman”
from the pen of Mac Willard (Mae
Craig) of Jacksonville, Fla., one of
the most gifted writers in the south.
The story deals with the domestic
relations of two mismated families,
for whom business cares and soeie-
ty’s charms make the matrimonial
yoke somewhat galling. It is a
ry of thrilling and dramatic interest,
yet wholly devoid of sensational
tures. The passionate yearning for
conjugal love and the futile effort of
a noble womanhood and sterling
manhood to bear up bravely against
the weakness and apparent
ence of their respective life partners
are depicted in the strongest and
most fascinating manner by the gif¬
ted writer. This is one of the best
and cleanest stories ever
to the people of the south by a
ern writer. The number is tilled
with excellent complete stones, with
poems, sketches, and essays ot
ted writers. Prominent features are
the children’s page, the domestic de¬
partment, and vocal and
tal^nusic. The success of this
