In due time Kent reached Zebulon

was called and it was decided to
have nil the women und children
carried t > the court house and the
men to arm themselves as bast they
could and stand guard during the

allowed many liberties both of body

had been doing the week’s washing,
Ho said to her :
“Aunt Hager, your mistress wants
you to go to the court house where
all tho women and children are that
you may he protected from the In

The old woman in her blunt way
said : “I ain’t, gwine a steti! I bin

He told me that before ho got; to

in announcing that it was all a prac

mention Indians again.
Thus ended Pike’s Indian war.

We can now boost of two hotels. Mr*.

The masquerade party at the Mat
thews hotel was a complete success
lost Friday evening. The building
was packed and the attendants en
joyed themselves hugely. Some vciy
tine costumes were displayed—a
great many being rented from Atlanta
and Macon. The different characters
taken were pretty w ell carried out
especially those of Mr. V. O. Marsh
born as the “Jolly Dutchman;* Mr.
J. O. Walker as “the Indian Chief.”
'Miss Mary Stafford was tompli merited
very highly—character unknown.
It was greatly regretted to he ir of

Dr Alt Eiiitob: — Tho injunction to
write has more than once been given me,
but when one reflect* that there are so
many writers of the present day who
write too much; and when one feels so
much, and yet knows tier incompetent y
to exuress iierseil in concise, yet forcible,
.................... ■"
sonic task. But I’ve net Rie down to
write, And write Komething l will,
IFiftstlier it be good or oad, depends more
on public sentiment thuu on what 1 write.
For instance, were I a pomilav writer l
could, »« others do, write much about
nothing, and yet the people would euj«*y
it because I wrote it, and it would com
maud big money. What—big money for
much about nothing? Excuse me—I
doVt mean to say anything re denting on
any one else, for those who live in glass
houses should not throw stones. You
sue the point. Ido not wish to incur
the displeasure of those who write lest
they fling at me. But, Mr. Editor and
dear reader, does it not occur to you
that too much is said about * thing that
happens to take well at first, 1 will il
lustrate: Bill Arp wrote a letter years
ago that was the foundation of his liter
ary success (just as I want this to bo) but
m the long ago he wrote of bis family—
Afrs. Arp in particular, Jessie. Carl and
Ralph especially—and though he has
ooffled*/rtiiidreds of dollars hy a repeti
tion of t heir names and jokes, etc., he
still writes ef them. Who has not heard
time and again of his bobtail cart ihut
big John Somebody made good bis es
oape from Rome in;’ IFho of us could
not get up from a spelt of La Grippe aud
write of “la handkerchief, la camphor
and la cough that lasted from moru till
uight, amid from night till morn again - ?’’
But you see Bill Arp wxoto it, aud the
public read it whether there was any
thing in it or not ami he was paid for it.
Then thero is Plunket who dar..s up pro
grPMsion and his ole ’oman and every
thing generally aud we think it all.iuht,
Dotsy 11 amilton’s pa got drunk so often
and Cap Dewberry Hung around Betsy so
long without marrying her that there
was too much of it. B it they k<h the
money for it all the same.
Last year Atlanta wanted a confederate
home, and calls for money were sent out.
W here was the sense in that confederate
home? Would you take men from their
families, or build a homo large enough
for thousands of families? Atlanta sim
ply wanted tbe money that such a pro
ject would carry there. I know that
sentimental cant about the post - soldier.
Just mention the battle field—one in
p–rticu’ar—and my heart begins to bleed
at the remembrance. But the sum to
gether with the salaries of the trustees
ami divide it among the poor widows
and orphans of the state according to
their uceds.
Last summer it was the city of Fom
pei—in Die fall the expoftltion—soaie
tbinji all tbe time to take money out of
the country. Later, Davis died and we
all grieved for him, but he bad, to go,
aid many just as good men have gone.
But he was and old war horse. He
fought for us and suffered for us a^d
when we went to work lo build a meu
uriieut Atlauta wanted it.
B'hett poor virady died we felt sadder,
if possible, than when Davis died* But
there was two much said about it,
Too much!
