One is chu-ral by "tbs news which
comes from tbs Capital City to the effect
that Brother Moody is having a wonder
ful awakening among the sinners there.
It is not recorded that more than one
con gressm an—Senator Joseph Blackburn
of Kentucky—has as yet been hopefully
converted, but the fact that this one has
been speaks volumes of hope.
Suppose tvsa two-thirds of tbo sena
tors and representatives should suddenly
be turned from the error of their ways.
Than no congressman would ever fili
buster and delay the possuge or defeat of
a MU. Nous would ever insinuate that
a brother waa a falsifier or a coward.

would ever keep a constituent in office

spend 00,000 of public money for wine end
cigars while going to another congress
man’* funeral. None of the cabinet offi
cers who had been converted would have
tbsir carriages and cooks kept at Uncle
Hesu'a expense. None of them would
eras go Junketing on vessels of the navy.
No awfnl private scandal* or Washing
ton lawsuits reeking with unpleasant
ness would offend public morality. What
an all round transformation there wonld
be, to In sure, if Brother Moody should
succeed in converting the government
officials, high and low. in Wasbimrtou!

The death of John T. Ford, the old
theatrical manager, in Baltimore re
moves one of the few surrtviug individ
uals closely connected with Ford's thea
ter in Washington when President Lin
coin was assassinated. If be had lived a
month longer, be wonld have survived
Lincoln exactly M years. Almost a gen
station has passed since the thrill of hor
ror ran through the country that chilly
morning of April 10 when people opened
their morning paper and saw iu great
headlines the awful announcement that
the president had been shot and his death
Was oaly a question of minutes. With
all the terror* the country hod been pass
lag through during thos* four years of
war, it bad nevsr corns within range of
the Imagination to conceive that an
American president could be assassinat
ed. We are unfortunately too familiar
with the possibility now. But then it
was all an awful mystery to ns. We
knew that kings and rulers in Europe
bad bean murdered time and, again, but
a president of the United States, no!
Now nets* non help the thought this
very tragedy hae been enacted twice; it
may he again. We can only hope and
pray that it never will be. We can
never feel abeolately sure it will not be.

Mr. Hewitt drew attention particular
ly to the falling off, as he supposes, iu
the towering intellects of southern states
men. The troth is that there never war
a time since the beginning of the conn
i try when there was so much Intel
lectual activity iu the south as there is
today. Its people throughout are wak
ing to the needs of the time in the de
velopment of their material resources,
In universal education and economic
science. Tin- re may not be any one or
two men who tower above all their fel
low* a* some of the old BtatcHtnr-n did,
hut it i* only because the level of all
men ha* raised. It take* more now to
be a great statesman than it did even
on* generation ago. New and perplex
ing problem* rnu*t he wrestled with at
every turn that never disturbed the
minds of the old statesmen, north or
south.
These are problems of economic science
chiefly and must be thought out and
wrought out quietly, Tlieir solution is
accompanied by no roar of cannon or
flash of steel, but it is progressing surely
nevertheless. If the exigency arose for
fighting, for patriotic self sacrifice, for
great deeds of public during, our tin u
would be there, (rod bless them! north
and south, ready for the need at on
hour'* call. Great occasions develop
great wen, and we have some developing
now in the economic school that will as
tonish Mr. Hewitt and fill him with pa
triotic pride if he lives a few years lon
ger. There are thinkers, soldier* and
scholars Just as brainy, patriotic and un
selfish as there ever were.
Then, too, Mr. Hewitt must not for
get that the farther away from his own
time a great man's repul atiou drifts the
greater it become*. It was not in his
own day that men recognised what a
colossal figure Lincoln was. His fame
Is still growing. The great men to whom
Mr. Hewitt compares the present gen
eration of public men are all deud.
When they were alive, they had bitter
enemies, every one, who told shocking
stories of them—yes, and people believed
these tales.

The pestiferous bomb throwers are
getting in their work invarions quarter*
of the world. Beginning with the out
rage m tl«i theater at Barcelona, in Spain,
lost antumn, the Messieurs Anarchists
have niunaged to keep a good share of
public attention attracted to themselves
for the past six months. The affair at
Barcelona itself was iu revenge for the
execution of the anarchist Pallas, who
threw the bomb at General Martinez
c * General Campos still lives and
j , i» the general . now conducting , * matters
for Hpain in Morocco. Vuillard, in Paris,
has expiated the crime of bomb throw
ing and murder. That, however, did
not prevent AnarchiHt Pauwele from at
tempting to blow up the fninotift old
church of the Madeleine, with nil it a con
gregation of wornhipera. London did
not escape the terror uud alarm of threat
ened anarchistic dcinoufitrations, but
thu* fur notliing of any consequence 1ms
been blown up.
In Kuiue it was different. The cere
monies lately at the funeral of Siouor
A list'll, who died from wounds received
at the explosion iu the Piazza di Citorio,
were imposing enough. Baron Som.inO,
finance minister, liiiuself walked In the
funeral procession. It was enough to
tempt the miscreant who threw the first
bomb to try it again. There was a chance
of killing so nmny at once, ami that is
whnt the dynamiters most desire to do,
according to tlieir own profession.
In Russian cities there are constant
dynamite scares. In Brussels they are
also frequent, while Berlin occasionally
is stirred into a state of alarm from the
same cause.
In the United States, except for the
case of the lamentable Hayinarket affair
in Chicago und the explosion iu Itusscll
Sage’s office about a year ago, we have
escaped serious injury and disturbance
from Ixnub throwing. It lias boon said
that ns soon as the anarchists come to
America they get so busy trying to be
come rich that they lose interest in kill
ing people as a recreation. Recent de
velopments, however, look as if this say
ing were becoming nn empty boast. In
West Virginia a few weeks ago a janitor
found under a large hall in which a hun
dred people had been dancing the night
before four bombs attached to a half
burned fuse. If the fuse had burned ou
instead of dying out, the hall, with its
dancers, would have been lifted from its
foundations.
But it is in New York, where the most
foreigners are, that the outcroppings of
the bomb hurliug spirit are chiefly visi
ble. One bomb was thrown recently
that wrecked a beer saloon, but fortu
nately did not kill any one. A mnu was
arrested in Harlem the same day who
had in Bis possession dynamite bombs
enough to blow up a whole block. He
declared when captured that the package
had been given him to carry, and he did
not know what was iu it. But it made
the Inhabitants of that part of the big
city feel queer for a week.
Of course it is easy for a man to say
when the explosive is found iu his posses
sion that it wits meant for blasting pur
poses. But these are times when bus
pected dyuomiters will bear close watch
ing in every part of the Union.
The navigation law permitting thu
American flog to float only over ships

1792, 102 yecr* ago, and has never been
overhauled since.

Saved Her Life.
Mrs. C. J. Wooi.nRinoK, of Wortham,
Texas, savotl the life of her child by the
use of Ayer’s Cherry Pectoral.
"One of my children hid Croup. The
case was attended hv our physician, and wai
supposed to bo well under control. One
nigbt I was startled by the child's hard
breathing, and on going to it found it s tran
gling. It bad nearly ceased to breathe.
Realizing that the child’s alarming condition
had become possible in spite of the medicines
given. I reasoned that such remedies would
be of no avail. Having part of a bottle ot
Ayer's Cherry Pectoral in the house. I gave
the child three doses, at short intervals, and
anxiously waited results From the moment
the Pectoral was given, the child's breathing
grew' easier, and. in a short time, she was
sleeping The child quietly is alive and and breathing well to-day, naturally. and I uo
not hesitate to say that Ayer'a Cherry Pec
toral saved her life.”
