William S. Whitaker founded the Orthodox Democrat in 1885 in Barnesville, Georgia, as a four-page Democratic newspaper. The weekly paper was delivered every Thursday for a subscription cost of a dollar and a half per year. In 1888, the Democrat reported a circulation of 1,000. The paper ceased publication in 1889 with Whitaker as the sole editor and publisher for entirety of the newspaper’s run.
